Personally, if you can get another $100 skip the 7790/560 and go with a GTX660. You will get above PS3/360 graphics cleaning up jaggies and better framerates without breaking the bank. Also the amount of VRAM is important, in your price range, you want at least 2GB worth.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

My god the 8350 is a struggle. So I had it setup and went through my basic tests at stock numbers and it never got over 40 with the 212 evo. Great. I don't know if updating the bios did something or what, but the temperatures go psycho even with just a 21x multiplier. Nothing else changes, but those temps launch like a rocket. The heatsink is a pain because you aren't sure how tight it can go because the retention plate doesn't go all the way to the mounts, but it seems right and temps drop right off when I cut something off so it would seem the heat sink does it's job there. I can put my finger on the pipes though and at 55+ (supposedly...), it barely feels warm. I really think it's the bios, but I don't want to push my luck. Prime95 and the like didn't like the FSB increase, but with multipliers, the only issue I have is temps, so I don't know. My phenom II needed some work but it wasn't as touchy as this one is with just a small overclock.

So I reset everything and went back to my first tests. Prime95 runs fine and I peak at 39C. Doesn't seem to really throttle my speeds at all, but CPU-Z showed them dropping here and there for a second, mostly between tests. AMD's temps are weird, but since these were under load, they seem right. Makes no sense why they'd soar with the only change being 20x to 21x.

I let the board do an OC tune just and it goes to 215x20... which fails. I've multiple recommendations out there. I guess it could just be a poor chip, and it runs fine in it's stock state, but I was hoping for what I paid I could squeeze out at least 300-500 MHz more. Maybe not.

So I really have no idea what's going on. Stock settings, it stays nice and cool with prime95 (which makes me think there is a ton of throttling. I manually put in the stock settings, and my temps blow up. Only thing I can figure is that heatsink isn't installed tight enough, but good lord, I've cranked those screws a bunch already. I don't want to break the thing!

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I don't know if anyone still comes here but I've got a question for you guys:

What's the best graphics card for gaming at 1440P? Is there any reason not to shoot for the stars and just get the 780ti or is there a better card for it? The price for most AMD cards went up with the bitcoin/litecoin craze, and I was going to get an R9 290 but now I'm not really sure.

EDIT: Well, I think I'm going to wait out the coin craze for prices to come back down and get the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Don't know if this is the place for a post like this, seemed like a good spot for it.

I just got a new HP laptop, and the internet is slow at times. When I took it out of the box it was blazing fast, I use speedtest.net to check speeds when things are going slow. It was at like 10-12 Mbps, youtube videos were playing fantastically in HD, no buffering at all, and I was bouncing between apps like crazy.

But recently it's been slowing down a lot, I do the speed test now and it's at like .75 Mbps, which is fine for browsing random sites on the internet, but videos and other things that require more resources load terribly slow. I tried the speed test on my sister's Dell laptop, and it was at like 10 Mbps, so it definitely was a problem with my computer.

I uninstalled the Norton free trial thing, and restarted the computer. That seemed to fix it for a day or so. But I came home from the cabin today and it's still significantly slower than my sister's laptop.

I'm gonna take it in to Best Buy tomorrow to have them look at it and see if it's a problem with the computer.

But do you guys have any ideas of what might be causing this. Respond here or shoot me a PM if you want more details. Thanks!

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Finally got all the parts to get my computer up and running. Putting it together was easier than I expected, and I managed to get it running first try luckily. After rebates all of the stuff below will have run me about $290. I just pulled the optical drive out of my old PC. I'll probably add a 7790 or something similar in the near future as that's more than enough kick for my limited PC gaming. I'm currently running a Windows 7 trial, and will most likely update to Windows 8 via my girlfriends student discount.

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($134.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($49.99 @ Microcenter)
Memory: Team Vulcan 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($72.98 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.98 @ OutletPC)
Case: Rosewill Line-M MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($62.24 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($44.99 @ Microcenter)
Total: $425.17 (I spent ~$290 before tax)
