Re: Getting sacked

I run a lot. When I mean a lot, I mean compared to Barber's attempts in his previous years, I am going to pass his career attempts and yardage. I don't have a problem winning games. I have a modest record at 7-4. I attempt about 15-20 passes a game with Collins/Palmer (Collins is out with an injury). The problem is that in 11 games, I have been sacked a total of 69 times. My line is giving up an average of about 6 sacks a game. That is downright horrible.

What I notice is that my tackles especially don't seem to ever block. Sure they drop back into pass protection and form a pocket, but they don't block the DE who just loops around them for a sack. So, I step up and between my Guards and Tackles. Not a tremendously big deal, since there is a way around it, but I have looked at many, many replays, and my Tackles just don't block at all. It seems like they stand there and don't engage, but just try to stand in the way, like a tree. And they don't even do a good job of that either, but I digress.

In my 2nd season with the bears I picked up a rookie tackle (I think from free agency). He was rated 65 overall but his blocking was just superb. I don't know why. I had other guys that were rated much higher but didn't block NEARLY as well. It may have something to do with his strength rating(85). His pass blocking was like 60 or so but he hardly ever got beat at the line. I tried to give other guys a chance but he made it IMPOSSIBLE for me to take him out of the game. Strangely enough his rating didn't go up for 2 years but he was still ROCK SOLID in performance!

excellent post, man. that is what i notice. i don't always play the highest rated. some lower guys are better.

for those of you struggling. use your gameplan and change the settings. your team will practice on its weaknesses. it does impact the game sometimes for the worse also. i had made switches to get my inside running game better once and the next thing i know i cant run. so i switch back and everything went back to normal and i could run again.

Re: Getting sacked

Let the Computer handle your drop. While he is dropping back, read the defense, and once he hops forward, throw. You shouldn't get sacked much if you do that. The key is to read the defense, and get rid of the ball quickly.

If that is directed to me, then I already do that. Again, it was just a quirk of mine to see my tackles not engaging the D-Linemen. Most of my sacks with Vick (and Bledsoe for that matter) is because I either A) hang onto the ball too long, or B) Scramble myself into the sack.

If I do the timed passing, throwing when the QB hops, then I am golden. Sometimes though, as in real football, you need to buy yourself a little more time.

I agree...I play the guys with good Pass Block, Run Block Consistency and Strength. Overall takes into account a lot more than that and can make guys look better than indicated.

Re: Getting sacked

The key for me is to get rid of the ball. If you read a blitz pre snap either hot route to a short route or get ready to throw to one of your backs. I hardly ever take a sack unless a tackle whiffs on his assignment.

No that was directed at whoever started the thread.
