Speed is global and you can use the ratings to compare to 40 yard dash times (roughly).

4.2 = 100
4.3 = 95
4.4 = 90
4.5 = 85
4.6 = 80
4.7 = 75
4.8 = 70
4.9 = 65
5.0 = 60
5.1 = 55
5.2 = 50
5.3 = 45

I do wish VC would add ACCELERATION to players. Some players aren't fast but get to top speed quickly. I would also love the QB's accuracy to be broken down into short vs deep accuracy as some QB really throw a good deep ball (Blake) but aren't accurate in the short game or vice versa.

I always say they should just use real 40 timnes so people wont complain.

I know a lot of you guys are new, and a lot of you guys are old, so here we go again with the ratings dance every year deja vu. Gentlemen, ESPN ratings are position specific, you can not compare a 100 WR with a 99 rated LB. Not only that, ESPN ratings system has its own paradigm and each attribute is a cog in the wheel that makes a whole. Yes a player can be rated 100 in his position he may be the best or one of the best in his position, he is not rated against a QB, WR, or a CB. He is rated vs others in his position.

Part deux, as I earlier mentioned one part doesn't make the whole its just another cog in the wheel. Rating =100 vs others at that position, so if To gets a 100 based on his status in the league as one of the top receivers in the league. Now the meat and potatoes of ESPN's ratings goes to the attributes that matter, like strenght, speed, composure, route running, consistency, intelligence and ect... these are also position based and tells you how good or bad the player is. His ratings once again is based on position vs. other WR. I hope this helps you guys who are trying to base ESPN's ratings on Maddens paradigm.

You can check this by moving your CB to Safety and you will see his rating change sometimes for the better.

Harrison is more sneaky fast but Moss is going to burn him up in a sprint

actually, Harrison probably runs a faster 40 time than Moss. Marvin is quicker.

Randy is 6'4 and has longer strides. Moss would run a faster 100 m dash but i guarantee you that Harrison is faster than Moss in his 40 time AND on the football field. The fact that Moss has both size AND speed makes him a freak of nature. Harrison is all speed and quickness.

Randy Moss ran/runs a faster 40 time than Marvin Harrison. I don't think Marvin can run a 4.2 like Moss. He's still fast tho.

I wish I wasn't a Vikings fan for posts like these so I don't come of as a fanboy. But I can't even fathom how you come to your conclusions.

Re: Ratings are Position Specific!!!!!!

I have most of the PFW draft books going back to 1994. Marvin Harrison was listed as having a 40 yard time of 4.4. His acceleration may push him to a high speed rating for 2K as he plays very fast.
Unfortunately I am missing the 1998 book which has Randy Moss but I believe his speed was better than 4.4 and possibly lower than 4.3.

Re: Ratings are Position Specific!!!!!!

This does not really gauge how fast a player is, and is somewhat based on the type of an offense a team runs... but it helps puts things into persepective.

Marvin Harrison, 8 years pro
759 catches, 131 catches 20+ yards, 30 catches 40+ yards

Randy Moss, 6 years pro
525 catches, 131 catches 20+ yards, 46 catches 40+ yards
