Red Wolves Open Conference Play With 59-6 Victory Over Middle Tennessee State

Jonesboro, AR - With starting QB John Campbell suspended for the game, the Red Wolves Defense was dominant in a 59-6 victory over Middle Tennessee State. True Freshman Jason Terrell was confused by the scheme implemented by Defensive Coordinator Dan McCarney, which intercepted the QB 6 times.

Ryan Aplin threw for 340 yards, the third time this season he has thrown for over 300 yards, and connecting with 3 different receivers for TDs (Carlos McCants, Allen Muse, Warren Leapheart).

"Aplin continues to progress and process the game better." Head Coach Jason Cameron said.

"He still needs anticipate just a tad faster, but he is getting there." Cameron offered up.

While Aplin does continue to put up imoressive numbers, the anticipation that Coach Cameron mention, did lead to two interceptions that were behind his receivers.

Those turnovers weren't costly, as the Red Wolves defense swarmed all day with 7 sacks and 6 interceptions. Timothy Starson led the way with 2 sacks, but Terrious Triplett added 1.5 from the safety position. DT Amos Draper also added 1.5.

A combined sack from Cole Lorigan and Ryan Eustace led to a fumble that was scooped up by Artez Brown that was ran back for a touchdown, that effectively put the game away in the Third Quarter 31-6.

For the remainder of the game, the secod and third string got in the game, and with a full quarter of game time, QB Phillip Butterfield shined.

Butterfield was 8-9 (his only incompletion being an interception) for 179 yards and a TD thrown to Carlos McCants (his second TD of the game).

Butterfield also ended leading the team in rushing yards, with 23, while also scoring 2 rushing TDs.

"Butterfield looked calm and collected. We love hus scrambling ability." Coach Cameron said.

"However, we need to get the ground game going. It's disconcerting that Butterfield led the team in yards, and he only played one quarter."

With JD McKissic out with injury, RB Frankie Jackson continued to struggle only gaining 21 yards. Christian Flewellen didn't look much better, only gaining 5 yards on the ground.

Returner Josh Jarboe appeared to suffer a serious injury late in the game, after getting dragged to the ground returning a punt. This would only add to the injury troubles for the team this year.

Jarboe is scheduled for an MRI tomorrow.

The team will look to continue this momentum as next week they take on Louisianna Monroe.

Jarboe Suffers Broken Collarbone; Out Indefinitely

Jonesboro, AR - The injury bug continues to bite the Red Wolves as the team announced that WR and Returner Josh Jarboe broke his collarbone in yesterday's game.

The Redshirt Freshman was the primary returner once Chaz Scales was lost to injury earlier in the season.

"It's a huge blow for us to have both Chaz and Josh gone for the year." Special Teams Coordinator Bob Casullo said.

With both the teams primary returners done for an extended time, they will turn to starting CB Ryan Jacobs and WR Warren Leapheart.

With the injury concerns at the position, one has to wonder if it is wise to have the starting CB back there.

"Injuries and the potential for injuries are always a concern." Head Coach Jason Cameron said. "But, at the same time, I have to put the team in the best chance to win games. Ryan gives us that back there."

Second Half Surge Propels Arkansas State To Victory

Jonesboro, AR - Arkansas State scored 38 consecutive points to secure a win against conference for Louisianna - Monroe. The maligned running game had it's best showing of the season with Frankie Jackson rushing for 151 yards and scoring 3 TDs. Backup HB Christian Flewellen added 42 yards on the ground.

"We really broke their backs with the ground game." Head Coach Jason Cameron said. "Dan Enos called a great game, and kept his trust in the backs."

In what looked to be a shootout early on, with the team down 31-21 with a minute left to play in the second quarter, QB Ryan Aplin aired the ball out and connected with WR Carlos McCants on back-to-back touchdowns (54 yards and 60 yards) to take the 35-21 lead into halftime.

The Red Wolves sensed defeat in their opponents and didn't let off the gas, scoring 24 points in the second half. Jackson ended the game with 8.3 yards per carry, must of which came off a 70 scamper.

"It's real easy to rely on Ryan Aplin and his strong arm. But we need a strong running game to help open up some field for us." Offensive Coordinator Dan Enos said. "Today we were able to do that."

Once again QB Ryan Aplin threw for over 300 yards, setting him on pace to set the single season yardage record.

The Red Wolves defense wasn't as stout as it was last week, allowing Louisianna - Monroe QB Paul Jackson to throw for 3 TDs on 242 yards. Jackson was also able to break free from a Timothy Starson tackle and rush for 68 yards for a TD.

However, in the third quarter, Starson was able to get a strip sack, which allowed Ryan Eustace to pick up the fumble and gallop 14 yds for a score.

The team will have to shore up their pass protection heading into next week, where they face conference rivals Troy, who last year ruined the teams hope of a Conference Championship.

"Troy has a blitzing D. If we can't protect our QB, we will be in trouble." Ciach Cameron said of next weeks game.

The Red Wolves surrendered 6 sacks today and last week against Middle Tennessee State gave of 5 sacks.

Arkansas State Nabs A Trio Of Texas LBs

Jonesboro, AR - The Arkansas State Red Wolves announced the signings of three Linebackers, all from the state of Texas.

Head Coach Jason Cameron, along with Linebackers Coach Buster Davis, and Grad Assistant Cade Oliver made a quick trip through Texas and came back with commitments from Brad Lowery, Jason Means, and RJ O'Neal.

The biggest splash was the signing of OLB Brad Lowery, a 3 Star recruit, who had offers from Troy and Texas Tech. The 6'2 201 pounder was an All Conference selection and 2nd Team All State. Last year he led his conference with 109 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

This year he is on pace to finish in the top 5 in the state in tackles.

"Brad could very well be the crown jewel of our signing class. We made it a priority to get him signed early." Head Coach Jason Cameron said of the San Antonio native.

Along the way, the coaches stopped by Mission, Texas to secure MLB Jason Means. The 2 Star recruit is big for the middle, standing 6'3 and weighing in at 240 pounds.

"This guy is a thumper." LB Coach Buster Davis said of Means, who despite his size, leads his team in interceptions with 5.

At the time of his signing, Means didn't have any other D1 offers.

Also coming into the fold is MLB RJ O'Neal from Cloverleaf, Texas. The 2 Star recruit is 5'10 and weighs 237 pounds.

"He is more of a natural fit for what we want in our middle." Head Coach Jason Cameron said. "He is incredibly cerebral, and is a natural leader."

O'Neal helped his team reach the Conference Finals last year. He currently leads his conference in all defensive categories, with the exception of interceptions.

"I see a lot of myself in RJ." Cade Oliver said. Oliver who is helping with Special Teams this year sees him as a perfect fit for kickoff coverage units.

"High motor. He loves to stick his nose into the chaos." Oliver said.

Heartbreak In 'Bama: Late Touchdown Dooms Red Wolves

Troy, AL - Despite some late game heroics, including two TD's by RB Frankie Jackson, Arkansas State lost to their perennial conference rivals Troy 27-24.

With two minutes left to go in the game, and the score tied 17-17, Troy Kicker Daniel Olsen connected on a 18 yard Field Goal to make the score 20-17. However, the Red Wolves drove down the field and with 1 minute left in the game, QB Ryan Aplin hit Carlos McCants in the slot for what many thought would be the game winning touchdown, taking a 24-20 lead.

However, Troy's offense was not to be outdone. Trojans QB Marvin Rose connected on some deep down field throws to get inside the red zone. With 43 seconds left in the game RB Trey Merrick ran in the game winner.

As the Trojans fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium rushed the field, many Red Wolves players sat in silence, including CB Ryan Jacobs, who inadvertently tipped a Marvin Rose pass into the hands of Christian Pollock, allowing Pollock to score the games first touchdown in the second quarter.

"That was just a freak occurrence." Head Coach Jason Cameron said of the touchdown. "Ryan was in great position, the ball just happened to bounce Troy's way."

The Red Wolves offense stalled early on, only scoring 3 points in the first half, with QB Ryan Aplin turning the ball over on three interceptions, the team bounced back in the second half.

Thanks to the legs of RB Frankie Jackson (152 yards on 21 attempts), the Red Wolves were able to mount a comeback. Early in the second half Jackson broke free on a 70 yard score.

"The first half was brutal." Offensive Coordinator Dan Enos said. "But we kept our trust in Ryan, and came dang near close to pulling it out."

Coach Jason Cameron said he never wavered in making a QB change at halftime.

"This is not slight at Phillip (Butterfield), but Ryan is our guy. He gives us the best chance to win."

Despite Aplin's 3 first half INTs, in the second half, he looked on point, and got the late game lead with the pass to McCants. However, the team wasn't able to hold onto the lead.

"Gotta give Troy all the credit." Defensive Coordinator Dan McCarney said. "They found our weaknesses and exploited them."

Those weaknesses were evident in the seams, where athletic Troy TE Clarence Gray had 6 catches for 146 yards and a TD.

The Defense never got sustained pressure on QB Marvin Rose, only registering 2 sacks from blitzes from CB Artez Brown and LB Jason Card.

"We have got to win the wars in the trenches." McCarney said.

Troy was able to win the Special Teams battle. Trojan true freshman CB John Harris broke free on a Red Wolves punt, and blocked a Ryan Wilbourn kick. This led to the 4th Quarter field goal by Daniel Olsen that gave the Trojans the 20-17 lead.

"That just can't happen." Special Teams Coordinator Bob Casullo said. "We will get in some intense practice this week to fix the coverages."

With the loss, the Red Wolves fall to 3-3 and with a conference loss, the specter of a Sun Belt Championship has diminished.

"We are going to keep grinding. We need some things to fall our way, but we also have to do our part." Coach Cameron said.

That begins next week when the Red Wolves host Maryland.

Hometown Brian Jordan Commits To Arkansas State

Jonesboro, AR - 3 Star Offensive Lineman Brian Jordan doesn't have to go far when he enrolls in classes, as the Jonesboro native signed his letter of intent to play with the Red Wolves.

The undersized Jordan (6'4 256 pounds) had offers from Arkansas Pine Bluff and Texas AM Kingsville but no other offers from Division 1, despite being ranked as a 3 star recruit by Rivals.com.

"His size hurt him in this process." Offensive Line Coach Greg Frey said. "We are more than confident in Jordan's abilities and once he gets in and in the weight room, we think he has the potential to really grow into his body."

Jordan was an All State Honorable Mention last year, while this year has recorded 22 pancake blocks and hasn't allowed a sack. He has also recorded 3.5 sacks on the defensive side of the ball.

Jordan has also flashed his athleticism on the basketball court as a power forward, leading his team in rebounds and blocks.

"It really was a no brainer for me. I grew up here, and grew up a Red Wolves fan." Jordan said. "My family is all here, and I can't wait to play in front of them next season."

Jordan could soon find himself a favorite of fans of the CBS show "Survivor". His uncle Clay Jordan was a runner up on the Thailand season of the show.

"Uncle Clay is a crazy SOB. I love him to death. One day I could see myself outwitting castaways." Jordan said when asked if he wants to follow his Uncle's footsteps.

"But, all I am thinking about is outplaying the competition on the gridiron."

Re: The Coaching Career Of Jason Cameron: NCAA 12

Red Wolves Score Last Second TD To Defeat Maryland 35-28

Jonesboro, AR - For the second consecutive week, a Red Wolves game went to the final seconds to determine a winner. This time Arkansas State came out on top. This week, Red Wolves fans swarmed the field as the game hit zero.

"These close games are not good for my GERD." Head Coach Jason Cameron joked after the game. "I'll take some Tums, and feel great about the victory."

For the 4th consecutive week QB Ryan Aplin threw for over 300 yards (21-34 327 yards) while throwing two touchdown passes, including the game winning score to TE Kedric Murray. Aplin also flashed some elusiveness by scoring two TDs on the ground.

RB Frankie Jackson, who started the season off slowly when he was inserted as the starter, ran for over 100 yards (106) for the 3 straight week, while also scoring once.

Former Red Wolves WR DeKeathan Williams, who is currently on the Dallas Cowboys roster, was on the sidelines during his bye week, giving encouragement to his teammates. One of those, WR Taylor Stockemer had a game high 5 receptions and 109 yards.

"Having Key out there with us, pumped us up." Stockemer said. "He was talking trash, motivating us, and I wanted to have a great game, so I could chirp back."

While the team led for most of the game, Maryland came surging back in the 4th quarter, after back to back touchdown passes from QB Danny O'Brien. With 33 seconds left, O'Brien hit WR Scott Turner to make the game 28-26. O'Brien then found RB Patrick Greene in the flats for the game tying 2 point conversion.

With the game tied, WR Warren Leapheart to the ensuing kick off back 40 yards to give the team great field position. Aplin then found the after mentioned Stockemer on the sidelines for a 30 yard toe tapping catch. The trash talking, motivating, DeKeathan Williams was the first one to celebrate the outstanding catch with Stockemer.

The next play, Aplin connected with Murray on the game winning score.

"The guys showed heart and determination." Coach Cameron said. "After last week, it would have been easy to give up in a tight game like this. But, they didn't. I am very proud of all of them."

The Defense did give up 322 total yards on offense, and despite 4 sacks, again couldn't muster pressure from their front four. The Defense had to rely on Defensive Coordinator Dan McCarney calling blitz packages to get pressure on QB Danny O'Brien.

DE Timothy Starson was the only lineman to get on the stat sheet, with a half of a sack.

"I am going to sit down with (DL Coach Ryan) Sigler and figure out what's going on, and what we need to do to improve." McCarney said.

Next week the team takes on Conference rival Lafayette, who are currently 2-6 on the year.
