Re: Coaching Career of Lee Williamson (CFB 25)

Man Lincoln was playing so good, and then the wheels just fell off once you started SEC play..

The Arkansas game is going to be a big one for you. I feel like if you can pull it off and then manage to get a win over Ole Miss or TAMU again, then it will come down to Tennessee and a chance to get bowl eligible.

nice bounce back for Linc after a couple of rough SEC games. If he kept struggling might have been time to send him to the blue tent to check for a concussion lol

Yeah, it was definitely a rude awakening. The Boston College game was rough, too. We did enough offensively but we couldn’t stop them.

Vanderbilt Wins Overtime Thriller Against Arkansas

NASHVILLE, TN — Vanderbilt outlasted Arkansas in a dramatic 45-38 overtime victory on Saturday, with junior cornerback Zach Forrey delivering the game-sealing interception in the extra period.

After Vanderbilt (4-4, 2-2 SEC) struck first in overtime with a three-yard touchdown run by Sammy Lincoln, Arkansas had its chance to respond. Razorbacks quarterback Juan Bethea drove his team inside the 10-yard line, but Forrey intercepted a pass in the end zone to secure the Commodores’ fourth win of the season.

“This was a complete team effort,” said Vanderbilt head coach Lee Williamson. “We showed resilience and made the plays we needed to in crunch time. We let them back in the game late, but we made the plays we needed to in order to come away with the win.”

Vanderbilt built a 31-14 lead by the third quarter, fueled by Lincoln’s efficient passing and two touchdown runs. However, Arkansas stormed back with a 24-point fourth quarter, highlighted by Nick Maehl’s second rushing touchdown and a 10-yard scoring strike from Bethea to Jerron Clapp with just over two minutes left. Richard Church responded for Vanderbilt with a one-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds remaining, but Arkansas kicker Shakir Tubbs forced overtime with a 38-yard field goal as time expired after the Commodores' defense failed to put a stop on Arkansas' streaking offense in the final seconds.

Lincoln finished the game 36-of-54 for 411 yards with one touchdown and one interception while also adding 30 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. Garrison Ahmad had a standout performance with 11 receptions for 138 yards and a score, while Church contributed 53 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

For Arkansas (2-5, 0-3 SEC), Juan Bethea threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns, while Nick Maehl led all rushers with 115 yards and two scores.

With their recorded evened at 4-4, Vanderbilt will host No. 6 Oklahoma next Saturday.

Vanderbilt Turns It Over in Rainy 24-13 Home Loss to No. 11 Oklahoma

NASHVILLE, TN — Vanderbilt committed six turnovers on a rainy night, falling 24-13 to No. 11 Oklahoma in a game defined by sloppy conditions and a negative-six turnover margin for the Commodores.

Oklahoma (6-2, 3-1 SEC) capitalized on Vanderbilt’s miscues, including a pivotal 18-yard interception return for a touchdown by Nate Haddad in the second quarter that gave the Sooners a 14-3 lead. Despite outgaining Oklahoma with 387 total yards to the Sooners' 296, the Commodores (4-5, 2-3 SEC) were unable to overcome their mistakes.

“Our defense gave us every chance to win,” Vanderbilt head coach Lee Williamson said. “But six turnovers against a team like Oklahoma is a recipe for disaster. This is the kind of game that makes you sick to your stomach, since if you take away the turnovers, we probably win this one easily."

Quarterback Sammy Lincoln endured a tough outing, completing 15 of 30 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown, and five interceptions. The junior quarterback now has 16 interceptions on the season through just nine games. Backup George Westerman provided a spark late, going 5-for-7 for 79 yards in relief, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

Oklahoma’s offense relied on the ground game, with Louis DiMarco rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Quarterback Dexter Galloway threw for 112 yards and a 54-yard touchdown to Timmy Cassidy to open the scoring.

Despite all the turnovers, the Commodores kept it competitive, cutting the deficit to 21-13 in the third quarter with a 39-yard field goal by Joshua Haywood. However, the Commodores failed to find the end zone again, as Oklahoma’s defense stiffened in the fourth quarter. Haywood missed a short field goal in the fourth quarter that would've cut the deficit to 24-16.

Richard Church was a bright spot for Vanderbilt, hauling in a 10-yard touchdown pass and finishing with 74 receiving yards. Garrison Ahmad added 78 receiving yards on five catches.

“We have to learn from this,” Williamson said. “In games like these, every possession counts.”

The Commodores, now 4-5, close out the season with three straight games against sub-.500 teams, starting with hosting Ole Miss next Saturday.

Mississippi Outpaces Vanderbilt in Offensive Shootout

NASHVILLE, TN — The Mississippi Rebels pulled away late for a 50-38 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vanderbilt (4-6, 2-4 SEC) traded blows with the Rebels (5-4, 2-3 SEC) in the first half, highlighted by Kevin Wayne’s three-touchdown performance. D’Angelo Pruce connected on two touchdown passes, including a 27-yard strike to James Oben to tie the game at 17 in the second quarter. However, Mississippi closed the half with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dillon Coffey to take a 24-17 lead.

Coffey spearheaded the Rebels’ attack with 306 passing yards and two total touchdowns. Running back Amari Bequette added 116 rushing yards and a score, while Jeremiah Hakim tallied 101 receiving yards on five catches.

Vanderbilt showed resilience in the third quarter, as Wayne capped off a 48-yard burst with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 41-31 early in the fourth. However, Mississippi responded with a seven-yard touchdown reception by Deon Yarborough and a five-yard Coffey touchdown run to seal the win.

“We played hard, but their offensive execution in key moments was the difference,” said Vanderbilt head coach Lee Williamson. “We had opportunities, but we couldn’t capitalize when we needed to.”

Vanderbilt's starting quarterback Sammy Lincoln was knocked out of the game on the first drive with a leg injury. He was able to return on the next drive, but after true freshman, and the expected quarterback of the future D'Angelo Pruce, led the Commodores on a touchdown drive, Lincoln would stay on the bench the rest of the game. The five interceptions he threw last week against Oklahoma probably had something to do with Williamson's decision to sit him after Pruce started going off, too. Pruce finished 30-of-47 for 341 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, and also added 41 yards rushing.

"I was really happy with how D'Angelo [Pruce] played," said Williamson. "He made some mistakes, too, but he's a true freshman getting his very first game action. That's to be expected, and these are learning experiences for him."

It's unclear if Williamson plans to start Pruce next week or put Lincoln back as the Commodores' starter. Pruce was designated to redshirt this year, but with just one game played under his belt and two games left, he will be able to keep his redshirt regardless of how many games he appears in the rest of this season.

Running back Kevin Wayne led the Commodores with 74 rushing yards and three scores, while wide receiver Garrison Ahmad had nine receptions for 107 yards.

Mississippi’s Derek Tonges was perfect on three field goal attempts, including a 46-yarder in the third quarter, contributing 14 points. The Rebels outgained Vanderbilt 537 to 490 yards in total offense, with no turnovers compared to two for the Commodores.

The loss leaves Vanderbilt one defeat away from bowl ineligibility. “We’ll keep fighting,” Williamson said. “This team has heart. We came back and won two straight after falling to 2-4; we just need to do that again. Defensively, we need to play better."

The Commodores have given up at least 45 points in four of their last five games. They will host struggling Texas A&M next Saturday, their final home game of the season.

Vanderbilt Triumphs on Senior Day, Stays Alive for Bowl Eligibility

NASHVILLE, TN — On an emotional Senior Day at FirstBank Stadium, the Commodores rallied late to defeat Texas A&M 15-13, keeping their bowl hopes alive with one game remaining in the regular season.

Joshua Haywood was the hero for Vanderbilt (5-6, 3-4 SEC), connecting on five field goals, including the game-winner from 25 yards as time expired. Haywood’s clutch performance came after the Commodores' defense held Texas A&M (4-6, 1-5 SEC) scoreless in the second half.

“On Senior Day, there’s no better way to win than fighting until the end,” head coach Lee Williamson said. “Our seniors set the tone, and we’re proud to keep our season alive. I wish we could've finished some of those drives with a touchdown, but our defense really stepped up today.”

The Aggies jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, capped by Emanuel Rush’s one-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, which would turn out to be the game's only touchdown. Vanderbilt struggled to find the end zone but relied on Haywood’s accurate leg, with field goals of 28, 34, and 39 yards keeping the Commodores within striking distance.

The fourth quarter was marked by Vanderbilt’s defensive dominance and steady offensive drives. Haywood’s fourth field goal with 3:49 remaining cut the Aggies’ lead to 13-12. After forcing a quick Texas A&M punt, D’Angelo Pruce orchestrated a methodical drive to set up the game-winning kick.

“We know what’s at stake,” Haywood said. “It’s been a team effort all season, and I’m just glad I could do my part today.”

Vanderbilt outgained Texas A&M 376 to 245 in total offense, with Richard Church leading the ground game with 79 rushing yards on 12 carries. True freshman quarterback D'Angelo Pruce, in his first career start, threw for 220 yards on 22-of-41 passing and, critically, didn't turn the football over, while Kevin Wayne added 45 rushing yards and 54 receiving yards.

The Commodores’ defense was anchored by a stout run defense, holding the Aggies to just 48 rushing yards. “Our defense gave us every chance to win today,” Williamson added. “That’s what Vanderbilt football is about.”

The victory keeps Vanderbilt’s postseason hopes alive, setting up a high-stakes showdown at rival Tennessee in two weeks (after a bye week for the Commodores). A win in Knoxville would secure bowl eligibility for the Commodores. The Volunteers have had a rough season, sitting with a 3-7 record coming into this week.

“This win is for our seniors, but we’ve got one more job to do,” Williamson said. “We’ll be ready.”
