Re: The Road to Glory - a Denver Broncos Dynasty (NFL HC 09)
2009: Divisional Playoffs, @ Patriots
Spoiler
Denver would receive the ball to start the game. After trading punts, Tom Brady would hit Wes Welker and Jerame Tuman and consecutive 31 yard passes. This would be followed by an 18 yard TD catch from Malcolm Kelly, to put the Patriots up 7-0 very quickly.
After punting again, on the first play of the next Patriot drive, Brady hit Jacob Hester, who ran for 71 yards to put the Patriots at the Denver 13 yard line. My defense has a habit of stepping it up in the redzone, and they did just that, holding them to a field goal. Denver would take their next drive all the way to the 10 yard line, before Cutler was sacked twice, and Mike Bell dropped a wide open pass that would've been a 1st down. We would settle for 3, making the score 10-3 Patriots.
17-3 Patriots.Once again, we would trade punts, and during which, Cutler would get sacked 4 times, and his receivers would drop 3 wide open passes. The Patriots would finally break the continuous punts, but putting together a typical bullsh*t drive. The first play, Brady passed to Laurence Maroney, who ran 68 yards all the way to our 14 yard line. On the next play, Marcus Henry caught a pass far, far out of bounds, yet it was ruled a TD. I dunno why, but for some reason, there is no out of bounds when I face the Patriots. The same thing happened in my week 7 game against them. With 2:36 left in the half, I planned on getting a score to end the half. But nope, Champ Bailey fumbles the kickoff return, and gives it right back to the Pats. Three straight runs later (their first runs of the day), they kick a FG to make it 20-3.
Once again, the AI would screw me over. With 2:00 left, I finally had some offensive production. I got all the way down to the 10 yard line, and with 15 seconds left, the game used my last timeout for no reason at all. Of course, on the next play, Brandon Marshall catches a 9 yard pass, 1 yard short. If the game hadn't called my last timeout, I would've been able to possibly put the game within 10 points. But no, the AI strikes again. 20-3 Patriots at the half.
To begin the 2nd half, the Patriots received the ball, but couldn't manage anything, and were forced to punt. The Broncos would travel down field very quickly. The first play was a 24 yard pass to Jerheme Urban, followed by a 39 yard scramble from Jay Cutler, to put the Broncos at the 1 yard line. Cutler would cap off the drive with a QB sneak. Of course on the first play of the Patriots' next drive, Brady threw it right to Champ Bailey, who tipped the ball up, which Randy Moss caught and ran 80 yards to make the score 27-10 Patriots.
On the first play of the Broncos' drive, Cutler would get fatigued and I had to sub him. In comes good ol' Andre Woodson. On his first pass, he found Roydell Williams for 23 yards. Two plays later, he hit Jerheme Urban for a gain of 21 yards. Then on 3rd down, as usual, Mario Manningham would drop a wide open TD. So I had to settle for a 50 yard field goal, making the score 27-13.
At this point, the Patriots have still only ran three times. On the first play of the drive, Brady hit Malcolm Kelly for 31 yards, followed by a 27 yard pass to Jerame Trumane. This would be followed by 3 consecutive dropped INTs, 1 from D.J Williams, 2 from Champ Bailey, and the Patriots would settle for 3, making the score 30-13 Patriots.
The next drive was pretty awful. Roydell Williams dropped 2 straight TDs, followed by another one from Mario Manningham. I went for it on 4th, and luckily Manningham converted. The drive would ultimately conclude in a 53 yard field goal from Rob Bironas, to make the score 30-16 Patriots.
On the first play of the Patriots' drive, Brady hit Wes Welker for 47 yards, followed by a 33 yard TD pass to Jerame Tuman. Its now the 4th quarter, the score is 37-16, and the Patriots have still only ran three times. Show some class!
Denver received the ball, and Cutler would be sacked 4 straight times, turning the ball over at the 3 yard line. On the next play, Brady threw a TD to David Thomas to make the score 44-16 for the Patriots.
Well...I've made a 28 point comeback before...this should be no different, right?
I'm not even gonna bother going into detail about the 4th quarter. I actually ended up keeping it close, but after I couldn't get the onside kick, the Patriots would just run out the clock, and win 50-44. A disappointing way to end what started off as a promising season.
Jay Cutler: 18-32 (52%) 420 yds 4 TD 136.8 rtg
Jay Cutler: 15 att 122 yds 8.1 ypc 1 TD
Roydell Williams: 9 rec 270 yds (OMG!) 3 TD (30 yards per catch)
And so ends the 2008 Denver Broncos' season. My approval is now at 87, but peaked at 96 throughout the season. I fufilled my pre-season promise by making the playoffs, yay me.
Colts @ Patriots: Colts win 13-6
Giants @ Buccaneers: Buccaneers win 27-20 (Giants scored all 20 points in 4th quarter
Super Bowl XLII
Colts beat Buccaneers 20-17 (Colts scored all 20 point in 2nd half)

Browns hire Mike Martz as HC
Buccaneers promote Bill Murr to HC
Jets hire Gary Kubiak as HC
Lions hire Romeo Crennel as HC
Raiders hire Gary Hammermill as HC
Texans hire Rob Ryan as H201C
I didn't even get any "cut dead weight" to start. As for the franchise tag, I'll usually always try to tag someone, just for trade purposes, but no one was really worth it, so I passed. I get my season goals, which are aquiring a SS, LOLB, and RT of at least 85 ovr. Luckily for me, SS Sean Jones (86) is an FA, so I'll be looking to sign him. There is also 92 ovr Jon Jansen in FA, but he is 32 years old, too old for the lucrative contract he'd demand. No good LOLBs available.
WR Marques Colston (91)
RT Jon Jansen (91)
RG Randy Thomas (90)
MLB Tedy Bruschi (87)
MLB Bart Scott (87)
LG David Hale (87)
ROLB Karlos Dansby (86)
SS Dawan Landry (89)
CB Chris Gamble (86)
SS Sean Jones (86)
With 48.35M in cap space, I have money to spend, although this FA class is somewhat lackluster compared to last year's. Also, I checked the Mock Draft, and McShay has me picking Ozzie Jones at 25! Hell yes!
Before I make any signings, I make a few trades. The first is trading K Rob Bironas to San Diego for the 51st overall pick (2nd round), and a 7th round pick next year. I feel I'm probably paying too much (2.5M) for a kicker. Not like he was bad or anything, as he won Kicker of the Year, its just a financial move. The next trade I make is sending HB Selvin Young to the Vikings for the 144th and 208th picks in the draft (5th and 7th rounds respectively). I did that simply because people were making offers for him, and Young is despensable.
And here we gooooo....
Lions sign DT Tommie Harris (85)
Saints retain WR Marques Coltson (91)
Jaguars sign MLB Tedy Bruschi (87)
Cardinals sign DT Pat Williams (84)
Bills sign MLB Zach Thomas (83)
Bengals sign RG Randy Thomas (90) Broncos sign RT Jon Jansen (92) - 2 yrs 12.5M, 2M bonus - I thought he would want a long, pricey contract, but when he was up for grabs for only 2 years and low dollar, I made sure to get him. Bargain if you ask me, especially for someone 92 ovr.
Falcons sign MLB Bart Scott (87)
Chiefs sign QB Ken Dorsey (84)
Chiefs sign ROLB Karlos Dansby (86)
Chiefs sign SS Dawan Landry (86)
Seahawks sign HB Shaun Alexander (83)
Eagles sign MLB Larry Foote (84)
Bengals sign CB Terrence McGee (81)
Redskins sign CB Tyrone Connell (86)
Saints sign CB Chris Gamble (86) Broncos sign LG David Hale (87) - 3 yrs 13.5M, 2M bonus - Reletively cheap for an 87 ovr. Coming off a big rookie season as well as his young age of 23 made this one easy. I will move either him or Ben Hamilton to RG.
Chargers sign SS Atari Bigby (85)
Redskins sign RE Jarvis Green (83)
Titans retain CB Cortland Finnegan (83)
Ravens retain WR Demetrius Williams (85) Broncos sign SS Sean Jones (86) - 5 yrs 21M, 3.5M bonus - Not really much of a bargain, but its filling a need nonetheless.
Those are some of the major FA signings. After signing Jones, that would be it for me. I still have 37M in cap space.
Anyway, I'm not gonna be able to please my owner by acquiring an 85 ovr LOLB. The only one I can trade for is Mike Vrabel, who at 33 is way to give up too much, and there aren't any available in FA. So, I'll have to look to the draft for one.
Re: The Road to Glory - a Denver Broncos Dynasty (NFL HC 09)
After that 28-0 start you gave the Chiefs, i wondered whether your D could hold against an actual good team.
Bad luck. Hopefully a few more pieces will get you over the hump
