Freshman Comes Up Big on Senior Day

USF (5-6) (2-5) 7-3-7-0-17

#20 Mech (9-3) (6-1) 7-17-0-0-24

Freshman wide receiver Brent Bracken torched the Bulls secondary for two crucial touchdowns, this one in front of the Mount Mechanicsburg fans.

Senior day started off slow for Mechanicsburg, as USF running back (and Texas transfer) Foswhitt Whittaker went over 1000 yards for the season, and ended the game with 119 yards. At the end of the opening drive South Florida quarterback BJ Daniels connected on a touchdown pass, setting a USF single season record with 29 TD’s. Mechanicsburg freshman wideout Brent Bracken responded with two first half touchdowns. The Mechanicsburg offense disappeared in the second half, but the defense held strong. Senior quarterback Lawrence Shaw finished 12 of 16 passing for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Junior A-Back Ricky Kemp rushed 16 times for 88 yards, while Jeremy Reyes added 12 carries for 79 yards. Bracken finished with 5 catches for 127 yards and two scores.

Mechanicsburg will next face Washington (7-5) (4-5) in the Emerald Bowl!

USF quarterback BJ Daniels celebrates his first quarter touchdown pass.

Key Stat: 18. USF had 18 first downs to Mechanicsburg’s 14, but the Wildcat defense played bend but don’t break defense.

Game Ball: Markell Bryan. The senior middle linebacker once again was all over the field in his final home game, finishing with 14 tackles and 1 TFL.

Senior linebacker Markell Bryan made his presence felt in his last game at Memorial Stadium.

Offense Ups Output in Rainy Emerald Bowl

#15 Mech (10-3) (6-1) 21-13-14-7-55

Wash (7-6) (4-5) 7-6-3-0-16

Junior A-Back Ricky Kemp had plenty of opportunity to flex his muscles as Mechanicsburg built an insurmountable second half lead.

The Mechanicsburg offense got off to a quick start when senior quarterback Lawrence Shaw hit sophomore wide receiver Lionel Poole on a 23-yard touchdown on the game’s opening possession. Washington fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and on the next play Shaw hit Poole again for a 31-yard touchdown. The 14-0 lead continued to grow throughout the first half thanks to Shaw, who finished the first half with four passing touchdowns when he connected with junior A-Back Jeremy Reyes on a 61-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Senior cornerback Booker Shelby added a pick six in the third quarter, and the Mechanicsburg offense turned the ball over to bruising junior A-Back Ricky Kemp to work the clock throughout the second half. Kemp finished with 21 carries for 97 yards, while Shaw completed 10 of 12 passes for 195 yards and 4 touchdowns, and also added 6 attempts for 52 yards and one score on the ground. The defense included stellar efforts from senior middle linebacker Markell Bryan, who made 16 tackles, senior safety Bryan Guerrero, 14 tackles and 1 tackle for loss, and senior cornerback Booker Shelby, who made 8 tackles and 1 interception, which he returned for a touchdown. The Wildcat seniors played proud in their last game.

Washington’s lone touchdown came courtesy of a swing pass to running back Chris Polk, who gave Booker Shelby a face full of dirt on the way to the endzone.

Key Stat: 21. Three Mechanicsburg first quarter touchdowns quickly put the game out of reach for the Huskies.

Game Ball: Lionel Poole. With two first quarter touchdowns the sophomore wide receiver spearheaded the Wildcats’ offensive onslaught. Poole finished the game with 3 receptions for 65 yards and two scores.

Sophomore wide receiver Lionel Poole lets the Washington defenders know this game was over in the first quarter.

Offensive Player of the Year

2009: QB JJ Rivera

2010: WR Andrew Utley

2011: QB Lawrence Shaw

2011 saw the Wildcats use a balanced offensive approach, with no individual skill players being named first or second team all-conference. The offense sputtered at points throughout the season, but no matter high or low, Lawrence Shaw was leading the way. The senior quarterback began the season slowly before catching fire in the second half of the year, becoming an integral part of the Wildcat attack during conference play. Shaw’s 4 touchdown passes in the Emerald Bowl helped Mechanicsburg secure its third consecutive bowl win. For the season, Shaw finished with 2098 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 595 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Year

2009: CB Julius McNamara

2010: MLB Markell Bryan

2011: MLB Markell Bryan

Senior middle linebacker Markell Bryan became the first two-time player of the year award winner for the Wildcats. Even though fellow defender Anthony Martinez won the Thorpe Award and was named 1st Team All-American, it is difficult to discount Bryan as the real leader of the Mechanicsburg defense. Bryan led the nation in tackles for the second consecutive season, this time tallying a school-record 143. In addition, Bryan added 17 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and one interception. Bryan was named 2nd Team All-American and 1st Team All-Big East. Bryan looks to continue his stellar career in the NFL.

Burgundy Out as Mechanicsburg Coach; Leaves for San Diego State

Mechanicsburg Head Coach Ron Burgundy made a surprise announcement today, stating he will leave the Wildcat program to become the Head Coach of San Diego State.

Burgundy informed his players after their Emerald Bowl victory over Washington. The players displayed varied responses.

"Yeah, it is a surprise," said rising senior A-Back Jeremy Reyes. "I mean, I expected him to be here all four years. Its disappointing."

"I kind of new something was going on," said rising senior strong safety Anthony Martinez. "After the last couple games Coach was kind of aloof. I mean, look at his post game quotes, 'I got no heart' and 'I'm in a glass case of emotion?' Obviously, his mind was on something else."

Several players also hinted that Burgundy has been enamored with San Diego ever since the team made a road trip there during the 2010 season. The Wildcats walked away with a win, but it ultimately cost them their coach.

Ron Burgundy, Head Coach 2009-2011
Overall Record 29-10
Big East Record 15-6
Record vs Rivals 5-3
Record vs Pitt 3-0
Record vs WVU 2-1
Record vs Penn State 0-2
Record in Bowls 3-0
Record in BCS Bowls 1-0

Ron Burgundy was helicoptered in to be announced as the new Head Football Coach at San Diego State University.

Re: Wildcat Pride: MBFranchise's Big East CAS Dynasty

2012 Coaching Search

With Coach Burgundy’s sudden departure to San Diego State, here are some of the top candidates to take over the Mechanicsburg Wildcat program. The AD has announced the program wishes to retain similar philosophies, including a multiple offense that incorporates the power run through the flexbone and a defense that is aggressive in blitzing. Here are the leading candidates in alphabetical order:

Troy Calhoun
Head Coach, Air Force Academy

Pros: Calhoun has experience running a similar offense to Mechanicsburg while leading the Air Force Academy. He has molded the Falcons into a respectable MWC team despite what many people consider to be inferior talent.
Cons: Not the most exciting option compared with other big names on this list.
Outlook: Calhoun appears to be a decent fit for Mechanicsburg, but do not be surprised if there are better candidates.

Derek Dooley
Head Coach, Louisiana Tech

Pros: Dooley favors a tough, physical football team that fits well with the Mechanicsburg persona. He is the son of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley.
Cons: Dooley runs a relatively pro style offense, and would need to add in the additional flexbone aspects of the Wildcat attack. He is also the Athletic Director at Louisiana Tech, so he is firmly entrenched and may be difficult to lure away. While Louisiana Tech appears to be a team on the rise, coming into 2009 Dooley’s career record was a less than stellar 16-15.
Outlook: Dooley presents an interesting option for Mechanicsburg that appears as intriguing as any of the other candidates.

Turner Gill
Head Coach, Buffalo

Pros: Gill has resurrected a moribund program at Buffalo. As a former option quarterback at Nebraska, his knowledge of multiple offenses would be a definite advantage.
Cons: Gill is one of the hottest names in coaching, and it appears that many teams are vying for his services. Once again, however, his record heading into 2009 overall is not that impressive.
Outlook: Gill appears to be a leading candidate who has the requisite experience and is ready for a new challenge.

Jon Gruden
ESPN Analyst

Pros: A Super Bowl Winning coach with extensive NFL experience would fit nicely on campus in Mechanicsburg.
Cons: Gruden would be a pricey option for the Wildcats, who would need to open the wallet. Also, Gruden is famous for a West Coast offense and Tampa 2 defense, philosophies that are a departure from what Mechanicsburg has run in the past.
Outlook: Gruden may be a pipe dream for Mechanicsburg, but if they could secure his services it would send shockwaves through the Big East.

Skip Holtz
Head Coach, East Carolina

Pros: Holtz plays football that relies on stout defense and special teams, hallmarks of Mechanicsburg’s program. He is a relatively young option. He is the son of Lou Holtz.
Cons: He is the son of Lou Holtz. Also, he has been at East Carolina for several years and only recently have them on the national level.
Outlook: Holtz appears to be an excellent choice who fits well with the Wildcat program. However, how would fans react to the son of Lou Holtz?

Mike Locksley
Head Coach, New Mexico

Pros: Locksley is known throughout coaching circles as an offensive innovator and a great recruiter. He may be able to improve Mechanicsburg’s recruiting on a national level.
Cons: Locksley has never before been the head coach of a major program. His offenses at Illinois were explosive but inconsistent.
Outlook: Locksley is likely out of the running because of his inconsistent previous teams.

Gus Malzahn
Offensive Coordinator, Auburn

Pros: Malzahn has experienced great offensive success wherever he has coached, be it in high school, Arkansas, or Tulsa.
Cons: Malzahn has skyrocketed up the coaching tree and lacks extensive experience at the college level.
Outlook: Malzahn is the ultimate hit or miss, rumors about his difficult attitude may overshadow his offensive ingenuity.

Chris Petersen
Head Coach, Boise State

Pros: Petersen’s teams are winners. Boise State has locked down their conference ever since he took over. The Broncos upset of Oklahoma in a BCS bowl accentuates his exciting style of play.
Cons: Peterson might have a better team at Boise State. The program is stacked, especially in NCAA 10.
Outlook: Mechanicsburg would have a difficult time luring away Petersen. He has a good thing going at Boise State.

Kevin Sumlin
Head Coach, Houston

Pros: Sumlin directs a high-flying offense that is sure to light up the scoreboard, no matter where he coaches.
Cons: Houston has not exactly been known for stellar defense since his arrival. Sumlin would present a different type of football than Wildcat fans are used to seeing.
Outlook: One of the leading candidates for the position. Young, intelligent, driven, and plays exciting football.

Tyrone Willingham
Unemployed

Pros: Willingham has been hired by big-time programs such as Stanford, Notre Dame and Washington.
Cons: He was fired by Notre Dame and Washington.
Outlook: hahaha! yeah right.
