Re: Tarantism's Cleveland Browns Franchise

Browns Lose Opener to World Champions

Patriots Shut Out Browns 23-0

Can't Miss Play: Maroney dashes into the endzone in the second quarter

(Sunday September 12th) Gillette Stadium; Foxborough, Massachusetts: The season opener Sunday did not pan out like new Browns head coach Leslie Frazier may have dreamed it would, both from a scheduling standpoint (struggling franchise opens the year against the most recent world champion and most successful team of the last decade) and a game standpoint, and the Browns left Foxborough with a decisive loss that was far more lopsided then even a 23-0 final could indicate. The Browns faltered on offense from the very start, going three and out on the first possession of the game, something that became a trend for most of the game with veteran running back Jamal Lewis struggling to find holes against a stingy Patriots rushing defense that featured the return of key veteran linemen Richard Seymour (who left the game in the third quarter reportedly with a bruised tailbone and did not return). It was clear that offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave wanted to control the clock by way of pounding the ball with Lewis in an effort to keep all-pro Tom Brady and the explosive New England offense off the field, but with Lewis consistently gaining just one to three yards per attempt it became increasingly obvious that this was not going to happen. When all was said and done the Patriots held the ball for 41:16, dwarfing the time of possession of the Browns (which sat at a measly 18:44). This can also be directly linked to the ineffectiveness of the rushing attack, as quarterback Brady Quinn and the offense consistently found themselves in third and long situations, and by the end of the game the Patriots defense had held the Browns to just a 15% third down conversion rate. In fact, the only major team statistical category that the Pats did not totally dominate in was penalties, which was a push at one apiece.

"I was proud of the way that the defense consistently stood up to adversity, especially in the first and third quarters", said Coach Leslie Frazier in his press conference after the game, "My hat goes off to coach Belichick for coming up with some creative ways to attack us both on the offensive and defensive sides of the football today. That being said, it is almost universally known that you need to be able to establish a ground attack if you want to win on the road in this league. A major part of our game planning revolved around Jamal and James [Davis] getting some holes from the offensive line so that we could control the clock. It's no secret that these guy's offense can go out there and put up some points, so what you gotta do is just take the ball out of their hands. When we couldn't do that it made our chances of winning a lot less."

On defense the Browns did seem to hold their own for much of the game, but a 53% third down conversion percentage for New England wasn't enough to cut it and it has been proven time and time again that Tom Brady will find ways to carve up a "bend but don't break" approach. The Browns did a decent job of pressuring Brady, though they usually relied on the front four as opposed to utilizing the blitz, and even though they were only able to come away with two sacks the unit was able to put pressure on Brady at points throughout the game, though maybe not as much as desired. The rushing game seemed to often catch the Browns off guard due to the frequency of New England passing attempts, and Lawrence Maroney carved up the lighter Browns defensive packages. This success on the ground particularly came in the second half when the Pats needed to run out the clock. Linebacker D'Quell Jackson had an outstanding day, totaling 12 tackles and one pass defensed.

Can't Miss Play: Brady to Welker for Six

"It's important to remember how young we are on the defensive side" said coach Frazier after the game, "We have a few rookies and a couple of other younger players out there starting. I thought that considering this, I thought that they played pretty well. I thought Eric [Wright] made some real nice plays, and D [D'Quell Jackson] was flying around making hits on guys. I thought that David Veikune and Arrington got more comfortable out there playing in the zones as the game went on. I feel like we have a pretty bright future on that side of the ball, but we have to give them some time to develop. You also can't expect them to be out there the whole game, so we need to get some help from the offense.

Quarterback Brady Quinn appeared to struggle at times, often times looking to force the ball downfield due to the third and long situations the Browns put themselves into. He also faced too much quick pressure in his face, especially from the right side where Rashad Jeanty had a field day against fourth year man Corey Hilliard, who was starting the first game of his career filling in for the injured Levi Jones. Hilliard is credited with allowing three sacks, all of which went to Jeanty. "You can't look to blame just one guy or two guys for a loss" said the young quarterback after the loss, "Coach has impressed upon us that we win and lose as a team. There are things that we can all be doing better, so we just got to get back on the horse this week and try to come out with a win next week in Carolina".

Re: Tarantism's Cleveland Browns Franchise

Cleveland Falls to Carolina, Slips to 0-2

Brownies Put Up Fight but Come Up Short

Can't Miss Play: Shaun Suisham Hits a Game Winner

(Sunday, September 19th, 2010) Bank of America Stadium; Charlotte, North Carolina: The Cleveland Browns headed to North Carolina in hopes of rectifying their reputation after an embarrassing performance against the world champion New England Patriots last week. While Coach Fazier and the Browns put up a fight this time, however, the team still came up short at the end of the fourth quarter when it counted, and the team slipped to 0-2 on the season.

The start of the game was painfully familiar for the Browns, bringing back memories of three and outs in New England last week, and throughout the first have the Browns were able to accumulate only 43 yards of total offense and two first downs, allowing 5 sacks on the quarterback and turning the ball over once on an interception. The Browns struggled even more in pass protection Sunday compared to week one, and Brady Quinn often found guys in his face very quickly and ended up running for his life, forcing the field to be cut in half. The Panthers seemed to be keyed in on everything the Browns tried to run in the first half, and the defense found themselves on the field way too often for coach Frazier's liking: "We need to find a way to get the offense to extend drives and stay on the field, particularly we need to find more success of the ground. I will say that a lot of that I feel falls on the coaching staff, and we need to get back to the drawing board this week to try to figure out some scheme differently and get Jamal some space" said the head coach, who is now 0-2 in his career, "but I thought that in the second half we looked a lot better".

It was indeed the tale of two halves for the Browns offense, as the team scored all of it's 14 points and gained 78 yards of offense (not much, but an improvement). The difference? The team opened up the playbook and started throwing out three and four wide sets, relying more on their young gun Brady Quinn then the aging Jamal Lewis to carry the team. The results came, and Quinn led the offense on a fourth quarter touchdown drive that was capped off by a Jamal Lewis touchdown run and two point conversion to make it a three point game with over eight minutes remaining. "It felt good to get the game in my hands like that" Quinn commented after the game regarding Browns offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave's reliance on him to get the team back into the game, "It's good to know that the coaches trust me to lead the offense, I feel like I can do it. I can't get all the credit, though, because the line really stepped it up and guys like Chansi Stuckey and Brian [Robiskie] make some really nice plays to let us push the ball down the field."

Can't Miss Play: Brown Seals the Deal for Panthers

On the other side of the ball the Browns defense greatly benefited from the offensive improvement. Throughout the first half the team got gashed by the Panthers halfback duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, and only two interceptions and a key third down stop kept the Browns out of a big halftime hole. The defense still allowed fourteen first half points, but they came out with some intensity in the second half and was able to keep the Panthers shut down down both through the air and on the ground, forcing another interception and keeping Carolina off the board throughout the third quarter. The team also was able to get to the quarterback far more frequently compared to the New England game, and pressure from guys like free agent signing Ray Edwards (2 sacks) and Kenyon Coleman (1 sack) were applying hits on Byron Leftwich, who was filling in for an injured Jake Delhomme.

Late in the fourth quarter, however, the defensive intensity that had been there for the entire second half seemed to run thin, and after the offense went three and out with roughly four minutes remaining the defense took the field with about righty yards behind them. The Panthers came out passing the ball and mixing in some draw plays and outside runs with halfback DeAngelo Williams. This strategy seemed to throw the Browns defense a bit off kilter, and Leftwich was able to consistently find holes in the Cleveland zones for good gains as the Panthers marched right down the field to find themselves with a first and ten on he Browns 36 yard line. The Browns made a nice stop on first down before giving up a nine yard scamper to Williams, who finished the game with an over five yards per carry average. After the play Cleveland was able to make a nice stop on third and inches thanks to a tough tackling effort by rookie linebacker James Arrington and safety Brodney Pool to force a fourth down on about the Cleveland twenty six yard line. To the Browns dismay, Carolina kicker Shaun Suisham nailed the 32 yard field goal to put the Browns up 17-14 with just 52 seconds remaining, a score that they would eventually in by after an Everette Brown sack on fourth down sealed the deal for the Panthers victory.
