2009 Season Week Three: Buffalo Bulls 16 UCF Knights 13

Buffalo Bulls 16 UCF Knights 13

The Bright House Networks Stadium

Orlando, Florida
72 degrees and Heavy Rain
Winds SE 0-6 mph

Defense Dominates on the Heels of Hurricane Fred

Being played three days after Hurricane Fred passed through North Florida, the Buffalo Bulls defeated the UCF Knights 16-13 on the strength of their defensive line in a rainsoaked battle.

Buffalo senior left defensive end Lawrence Lowe had a team record seven sacks and Junior outside left linebacker Dee Monroe picked up four more to contribute to a team total of twelve sacks for the game. Lowe was credited with knocking UCF's starting quarterback Eric Rozner out early in the first half with a vicious tackle from behind. Sophomore Nathan White was sacked nine times filling in for the injured starter on the way to a six of seventeen performance.

"By far this is one of the most impressive defensive performances I have ever witnessed in nineteen years of coaching." Coach Griggs said after the game. "The way that Lowe and Monroe took it to the UCF offensive line was just unbelievable."

When not sacking the quarterback, the Bulls fearsome pass rush resulted in six holding penalties and stopped two Knights drives late in the game. Buffalo also forced a saftey late in the first quarter to give the Bulls their first points in the first quarter this season.

"Hats off to Buffalo's defense today" UCF Coach George OLeary commented in his post game press conference. "We tried to run but their line and linebackers did a great job of clogging up the middle, when we went to the air, well... we ended up more often on our backsides." The loss was the Knights second of the season.

Bulls quarterback Aaron James went 15-30 for 251 yards with 2 touchdowns in the driving rain. Along with his efforts, James threw five interceptions. The turnovers continued with three fumbles, one of which resulted in a 55 yard return for a Knights touchdown midway in the fourth quarter. Senior Bulls halfback Adam Moore had a poor day rushing as UCF's interior line limited him to just thirty-five yards on eighteen carries. Senior wide out Lamar Campanella had 8 receptions for 145 yards and a TD and tight end Greg Griffin pulled in his seasons first TD after gaining 58 yards on 4 catches.

Sophmore MLB Nick Breedlove Suspended five games

Breedlove Cheats: Suspended Five Games

University of Buffalo Athletic Director George Murphy announced that Sophmore middle linebacker Nick Breedlove has been caught cheating. The confirmed cheating took place in Breedlove's Macro Economics class and school officials refused to provide specifics for the case.

A.D. Murphy stated that coach Griggs and his staff are in full support of honest student academic achievement and will suspend Breedlove for five games beginning with this weeks upcoming clash against MAC opponent Temple Owls.

"We have a good thing going in Buffalo right now and our players need to play the game right, and more importantly, achieve academic success ethically. There is zero tolerance on this team for taking short cuts. Breedlove is a young man and I am sure he will have learned his lesson." Griggs said after the announcement was made.

Records Fall and the Offense Charges

Wideout Lamar Campanella broke Buffalo's single game reception and single game yards records and Quarterback Aaron James had a career high four hundred sixty nine yards in the Bulls forty-five to fourteen win over the Temple Owls Satuday afternoon.

Campanella benefitted from a surprisingly strong performance by the Bulls sophomore quarterback. Along with four hundred sixty nine yards, James had three touchdowns and two interceptions. James' two interceptions marked the first time this season that his touch down totals have surpassed his interception totals in a game. Campanella had sixteen receptions for a whopping two hundred fifty-seven yards, breaking the previous Buffalo school records.

Halfback Adam Moore added three touchdowns to his season total on an 81 yard performance. Wideout Sean Moore hauled in six receptions for a career best one hundred forty receiving yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Left End Lawrence Lowe followed up on his seven sack performance last week with one more, and Left Outside Linebacker Dee Monroe chalked up two more.

Bulls hold on in second half, avoid letdown

Buffalo held on to claim victory Saturday afternoon after being spotted a twenty-one point first half lead against Central Michigan. The Bulls (4-1, 2-0) were led by Senior Fullback Adam Moore's one hundred eleven yard and three touch down performance. Sophomore quarter back Aaron James had three hundred twenty nine yards and one touch down verses five interceptions. James' picks led to seventeen Chippewas (2-3, 1-1) points off turnovers in the second half, a point not lost on Buffalo's head coach Johnny Griggs.

"We played well enough to win the game despite five interceptions by our quarterback. The kid is starting to throw for a ton of yards each game but it's offset by the interceptions. Our line needs to do a better job of protecting Aaron in the pocket. Those i.n.t.'s are coming off a hard pass rush and Aaron is throwing the ball up instead of rolling out and dumping it on the sideline or taking the sack."

Aaron James yards are helping his wideouts put up tremendous numbers for the season. Senior receiver Lamar Campanella had six catches for one seventy four and Sean Moore broke the century mark with one hundred eleven yards.

"It is amazing that despite the turnovers, we are winning our games against good teams. Our defense, led by Lawrence Lowe (three sacks) and Dee Monroe (one sack) are helping to neutralize the mistakes we are making on offense."

Coach Griggs added. When asked if he thought that his quarterback would be able to cut down on his interceptions this season he responded by saying that "MAC play is going to require him (Aaron James) to make less mistakes and somehow we need to block and provide better protection for him."
