Week 4 Top 5 Storylines

1) Big Ten, Pac-10 open conference play

With most teams finished with their non-conference schedules, it's time to really get into the heart of the season, meaning conference play. Two conferences kicking off their games will be the Big Ten and Pac-10, two power conferences with several BCS contenders ready to make their mark. Getting off to a 1-0 start in conference play is essential if you want to contend for a conference title, especially in these conferences where there is no title game.

2) What rebuilding year?

Many experts felt that Florida did not have enough returning to contend again for the BCS title, but the young Gators have proven them wrong so far. Led by sophomore Heisman candidate QB Tim Tebow, the Gators have gotten off to a hot 3-0 start including a 45-24 rout of then-#12 Tennessee last week. Florida hits the road this week to continue SEC play, but faces an intruiguing test in 3-0 Ole Miss, who dropped 58 points on lowly Vanderbilt last week.

3) Legit or not?

Several teams could step out of the shadows and emerge as legit contenders this week. One team in particular is 3-0 Alabama, who sits alone atop the SEC West standings and is coming off an impressive 42-28 upset of then-#8 Arkansas last week. The Crimson Tide have a chance to raise some more eyebrows if they can find a way to pull a 2nd straight SEC upset, this time at home against #20 Georgia. Other teams looking to legitimize their unbeaten starts against ranked opponents include Michigan State, South Carolina, Miami, North Carolina and Iowa.

4) Penn State, Michigan ready to rumble in Big Ten opener

This week's Game of the Week will be a doozy in the Big Ten, as #19 Penn State travels to Ann Arbor to take on #2 Michigan in the Big House. This Big Ten opener for both squads should be a tough, gritty game that old school fans will love.

5) Overcoming injuries

The sign of a true champion is the ability to overcome key injuries. Many teams find themselves in tough spots due to the vicious injury bug, even mid-major programs. Teams like San Jose State, UAB, Rice and Memphis have lost their starting QBs for significant amounts of time, while other programs have new faces carrying the ball due to RB injuries. Watch for teams that struggle heavily without their star playmakers.

Week 4 Game of the Week Preview: #19 Penn State @ #2 Michigan

Nittany Lions, Wolverines ready to throw down to open Big Ten play
NCAA Football News

The toughest, grittest conference in the country will open conference play with two of their most successful programs going head-to-head.

The 19th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions travel to Ann Arbor this weekend for their Big Ten opener against the 2nd-ranked Michigan Wolverines. Both squads will need to bring their A games if they want to begin the season 1-0 in conference play.

Penn State is coming off a 46-3 blowout of lowly Buffalo last week, which was good to see them get back on track after a tough 35-10 loss to Notre Dame in Week 2. Legendary head coach Joe Paterno has a nice balanced offense to work with, including plenty of seniors in the backfield. The key for Penn State will be their defense, ranked 23rd nationally, to shut down a potent Michigan attack.

The highly-ranked Wolverines have been nothing short of spectacular so far this year, appearing like the BCS title contenders everyone thought they would be. Last week, they succeeded in a tough test, grinding out a tight 21-16 win over rival Notre Dame. Michigan has been tough against the pass (8th nationally in pass defense) and have been ball hawks defensively (1st in turnover differential), but their potent offense has gotten off to a sluggish start (59th nationally in total offense). Hopefully, this Big Ten opener will give them the jolt they need if they want to really be legit BCS contenders.

This game should be a relatively low-scoring battle, but playing in the Big House has always been an advantage for the Wolverines. Plus, they have played one common opponent - Notre Dame - with very contrasting results. I'm taking Michigan in a nailbiter.

Michigan toughs out home win over Penn State in Big Ten opener
NCAA Football News

QB Chad Henne's 3rd TD pass of the day midway through the 3rd quarter broke a 17-17 deadlock and proved to be enough to lift the 2nd-ranked Michigan Wolverines to a 27-20 home victory over the 19th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Penn State actually led 14-7 at the end of the 1st quarter, but the Wolverines shut them down the rest of the way.

It was another typical Big Ten battle, physical and paced by defense. Penn State jumped out to a nice lead early, but they couldn't find their rhythm after. RB Rodney Kinlaw started the scoring with a 8-yard TD scamper less than 5 minutes into the game, but Henne answered back soon after with a 56-yard TD strike. Late in the 1st, Kinlaw scored again when he caught a dump-off pass for a 2-yard score to put Penn State up 14-7.

The teams traded field goals in the 2nd quarter, but Michigan found a way to force a halftime tie. Henne found WR Adrian Arrington for their 2nd TD connection with only a minute left to send both teams into the break tied at 17.

Michigan dominated the 2nd half with a strong defensive effort. Henne's 3rd TD pass put them up for good, but shutting down Penn State's offense proved to be the difference.

Henne threw for 243 yards and 3 TDs on 21-of-34 passing and was picked off once. Arrington was a thorn for the Penn State secondary, posting game highs of catches (8) and yards (128) and scored 2 TDs. Backup RB Brandon Minor caught Henne's final TD pass, and senior RB Mike Hart paced the run game with 100 yards on only 12 carries.

As for Penn State, they put up a decent fight but their offense struggled over the final 3 quarters. Kinlaw had a game-high 124 yards rushing and scored both Penn State TDs. Senior QB Anthony Morelli threw for 196 yards and a TD on 17-of-33 passing.
