Week 5 Top 5 Storylines

1) Shift of power in SEC

One of the surprising developments so far this season has been the shift of power in the SEC. Several teams entered the year with high expectations but have fallen completely off the map, while others not expected to perform have exceeded their predictions. LSU began the year ranked #3 but they are now #16 with a 2-2 record after a stunning 31-14 home loss to South Carolina last week. Arkansas began the year ranked #10, climbed as high as #8, but has lost 2 straight to SEC foes. Auburn has arguably been the biggest disappointment, starting the year ranked #13 but went 0-2 to start the season. Georgia raised eyebrows with a 56-14 season-opening shellacking of Oklahoma State, but have since stumbled and are now out of the Top 25. While those teams have struggled, surprising teams like South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama and Ole Miss have risen up and may prove to be tough to knock down. Not only that but defending champion #3 Florida have been untouchable so far despite their youth.

2) Big 12 play begins

One of the nation's best conferences begins its conference schedule this week, including a few to keep an eye on. #4 Texas welcomes an unbeaten Kansas State team, while #9 Oklahoma travels to face a 3-1 Colorado team that has already upset Florida State.

3) Tons of intruiging matchups this week

Week 5 might be an exciting week to watch, with so many interesting matchups on the schedule. #5 West Virginia travels to face a frisky USF team. Alabama tries to keep their unbeaten mark alive at #21 Florida State. Unbeaten North Carolina will search for their 2nd straight Top 25 upset at #6 Virginia Tech. Mid-major powers clash when Southern Miss travels to face a #11 Boise State team fresh off a bye week. The Pac-10 and Big Ten have a bunch of hard-to-predict matchups. Could be a wild week in college football.

4) Auburn looking to continue recovery against #3 Florida

This week's Game of the Week matchup is back in the SEC and featuring the Florida Gators. The 3rd-ranked Gators and Heisman candidate sophomore QB Tim Tebow will welcome a 2-2 Auburn squad on a mission to return to the Top 25. The Tigers got off to a horrid start this season, but have since recovered and looked good crushing New Mexico State last week. The Tigers will have to find a way to contain the dual-threat Tebow, who has already accounted for 15 Florida scores this season.

5) Heisman race heating up

The Heisman race will start to pick up now that every team has played a few games. Texas sophomore QB Colt McCoy is currently at the top of the weekly Heisman Watch, but Florida's Tebow is close behind. But really, it is anybody's race and one game could turn someone into a legit contender. Arkansas RB Darren McFadden has played well despite the Razorbacks' recent struggles, and could climb back into the race against lowly North Texas this week.

Week 5 Game of the Week Preview: Auburn @ #3 Florida

Tigers, Gators to throw down in SEC battle
NCAA Football News

Welcome back to The Swamp.

The 3rd-ranked Florida Gators will defend their home turf in a Game of the Week and SEC conference game for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, but this time against the 2-2 Auburn Tigers. The Gators are coming off a resounding 33-7 thrashing of the previously-unbeaten Ole Miss Rebels, while Auburn enters this game on a 2-game winning streak after crushing New Mexico State 45-7 last week.

Florida will once again put their faith in sophomore QB Tim Tebow, who will be looking to add more to his Heisman resume. The super soph has been unstoppable both passing and running so far, racking up 15 total TDs in only 4 games. Even with Tebow and the offense off the field, the Gators' 9th-ranked defense should be able to shut down the Tigers.

Auburn has looked much better lately after a terrible start to the season, and an upset of the Gators may be the ticket they need back into the Top 25. Senior QB Brandon Cox and sophomore RB Ben Tate anchor a balanced offense, but they will need to play much better than the stats show (70th in total offense) if they want to hang with Florida.

Not sure why this was the Game of the Week, because I'm thinking the Gators roll easily in this one.

Tigers' defense helps knock off Gators, knock out Tebow
NCAA Football News

Despite a bad start, Auburn may have delivered the most devastating blow of the year.

The Auburn Tigers went into the hostile Swamp, knocked sophomore Heisman candidate QB Tim Tebow out with a major injury and upset the 3rd-ranked Florida Gators 17-13. CB Patrick Lee returned an interception for a TD late in the 1st half to put Auburn up for good, and the Tigers held the Tebow-less Gators at bay to pull the shocking upset.

Tebow and the Gators got off to a nice start, opening the scoring late in the 1st quarter when Tebow scored on a 10-yard run. Auburn was able to tie the score at 7 midway through the 2nd when senior QB Brandon Cox fired a 58-yard TD to WR Montez Billings.

Both teams traded field goals to put the score at a 10-10 deadlock, but that's when the big hit happened. Auburn scored with less than a minute left and kicked off to the Gators, who tried moving the ball quickly late in the half. On 3rd down, Tebow dropped back to pass but got crushed from behind as he was throwing the ball. The wobbly pass ended up in the hands of Lee, who returned it 43 yards to the house with only 13 seconds left in the half. Auburn led 17-10 at the half.

Tebow went down hard on that play, and was immediately taken to the locker room. Over halftime, the Gators' training staff determined that the sophomore QB had broken his collarbone and will miss a significant amount of time.

In the 2nd half, the Gator offense struggled mightily without Tebow at the helm. They were able to manage a 4th-quarter field goal but it wasn't enough to prevent the upset. Auburn went scoreless but didn't need another score.

The Auburn defense was incredible against the nation's 3rd-ranked offense, holding them to only 224 yards. Before knocking Tebow out of the game, they held him to only 5-of-17 passing and turned the tide of the game on Lee's TD. Offensively, Cox threw for 227 yards and a TD on 14-of-39 passing and was picked off 3 times. Billings led all receivers with 82 yards and a TD, and sophomore RB Ben Tate paced the run game with 145 yards on 20 carries.

As for the Gators, they looked lost without Tebow. Tebow ran for 53 yards and a TD on 9 carries before his injury, but junior RB Kestahn Moore managed only 24 yards on 11 carries for the game. Backup QB Cameron Newton threw for only 27 yards on 5-of-12 passing in the 2nd half.
