Wildcat Press

Arizona reveals schedule

Arizona's Athletic Department revealed the upcoming 2010 football schedule. The Wildcats have a tough road ahead of them in non-conference play. They have their home set against #7-ranked Iowa. Also on board is #10-ranked Miami and #18-ranked UNC, both on the road. Pac-10 play for the Wildcats is another story. Oregon's resurgence as well as Washington and Stanford renewed sense of great play pose a challenge for the Wildcats in their quest to return to a bowl.

"We are looking to prove that last year wasn't a fluke bowl game," Winters stated in a press release. "We are going out to practice every day telling ourselves that we are a bowl-caliber team. We have a tougher road than most but those challenges will be met head on by us. We refuse to back down."

The football consensus around the nation has the Wildcats projected as a 5-7 team at best with their schedule. Even though they return everyone from their defensive front, the secondary has a few issues as youth reigns supreme there.

When asked about his defense, Defensive Coordinator Chuck Slater uttered just three words, "Desert Swarm, baby," in reference to the defenses in the nineties. However, since the late-nineties, the Wildcat defense has been quite problematic at best and with the crop of youth occupying the back seven, that trend may continue until they develop some.

Either way, the Wildcats are in for a tough year. With the exception of Washington State, every team on the Wildcat schedule has the ability to be ranked in the Top-25 this season.

The Wildcat schedule:

Re: Welcome to FBS Football: A Different Style Teambuilder Dynasty

I like the idea, but not sure I understand why you removed top teams. I can understand wanting to create teams to beat them and keep them from playing for a National Title every year (Alabama,Ohio State,Michigan)

I think it would be better to see your teams go something like

2 in the Big Ten replacing Northwestern and Indiana
2 in the SEC replacing Kentucky and Vandy
2 in th Big 12 replacing Colorado and Missouri
2 in the Pac-10 replacing WSU and Arizona
2 in the ACC replacing Wake Forest and Virginia

You could then move Northwestern and Indiana to the Mac replacing 2 crappier teams removing them all together.

Move Kentucky,Vandy,Wake,Virginia,Wake Forest to CUSA or to the Big East doing the same with them, or moving the CUSA teams to the Sunbelt replacing them.

Move Colorado, Arizona and WSU to the MWC along with BSU to replacing New Mexico ,Wyoming,UNLV,SDSU who could move to the WAC to replace La Tech,Idaho,NMSU,San Jose State and move them to the Sunbelt or gone all togehter.

Just my thoughts.

I like the idea, but I just think more people would follow along with the idea of watching Alabama,Ohio State,Michigan,USC lose rather then just be completely removed from the game.

Re: Welcome to FBS Football: A Different Style Teambuilder Dynasty

Deuce,

I did think about that before I started this dynasty thread. I do have another 12-team one with them in but it got a little old with continually playing and beating this core of about 15 teams. So when I set this one up, I simmed out about 10-12 years to see what kind of results I might encounter. It was quite a different landscape without those dominant teams (Bama, Florida, OSU, USC). No one team could really establish anything for more than a year or two.

In the sim, Caddo finished fourth in the SEC but in 2013 they won it. The following year, they were last in the SEC. Every year had someone different at the top. The NCGs all had different teams and some were quite a surprise without that upper echelon. The playing field really leveled out and it gives it more of an "any given Saturday" feel as no one team or group of teams can rise above the rest.

Re: Welcome to FBS Football: A Different Style Teambuilder Dynasty

Author's Note: In an attempt to speed this up a bit and get to game reports, I'm going to switch to a Streets & Smith preview. Their CFB issue generally gives a blanket overview and then a complete schedule listing in the back - at least they used to back when I was younger.

Streets and Smith

A College Football Preview

This year marks a new beginning for twelve new coaches to the FBS ranks. While each new coach has had previous experience in the coaching ranks, some at lower college levels and some as coordinators, their teams have daunting tasks ahead. They all have notable ranked opponents littering their schedule.

Many of these teams will struggle to reach .500 while an off chance has a couple who may make some noise in the bowl picture. Granted, that noise most likely won't be in any major bowls, let alone BCS bowls.

Writers here at Streets & Smith are intrigued to see how this college football season will shape up. There really are no teams to stand head and shoulders above the rest but there are many quality teams who figure into the postseason drama.

For a complete list of schedules, there is a section in the back of this issue. You can find your favorite team schedule there as well as every college from every division.

Re: Welcome to FBS Football: A Different Style Teambuilder Dynasty

ESPN's College Gameday

The season is set to kick off

This weekend is the kickoff of the 2010 college football season. There are many intriguing stories for this season. First off, we have twelve new coaches join the ranks and they all make their debuts this opening week. We also have a pair of early-season showdowns with a pair of BCS busters from last season, facing off against highly-ranked opponents. That is just the events of opening week.

Let's take a look at the schedule of games this weekend.

Game of the Week

#3 Boise State vs #4 Virginia Tech

In this "Game of the Week," #3-ranked Boise State will have their hands full with #4-ranked Virginia Tech and their own Heisman-hopeful at quarterback. If Virginia Tech can effectively use their spread-option attack and limit the number of passes they need, the Hokies can defeat the Broncos. However, Boise State sports their own Heisman-hopeful at quarterback. He leads this dynamic offense up and down the field with ease.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Boise State 38, VA Tech 30
Chris Fowler: VA Tech 28, Boise State 17
Kirk Herbstreit: Boise State 40, VA Tech 21
Lee Corso: VA Tech 31, Boise State 27

#15 Oregon State at #5 TCU

Oregon State comes into this game with a pair of brothers who make up most of the Beaver offense. The Horned Frogs will have their trouble trying to contain them if they want to win this game. Also for the Horned Frogs, they have a high-octane offense that will go over, around, and through the Oregon State defense. Oregon State needs to focus their efforts in getting the TCU offense off the field and keeping them there. Otherwise, that spells disaster for the Beavers.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: TCU 38, Oregon State 21
Chris Fowler: TCU 41, Oregon State 34
Kirk Herbstreit: TCU 38, Oregon State 17
Lee Corso: Oregon State 27, TCU 24 in OT

We'll highlight the games featuring our newest FBS coaches.

Hawaii at Independence

This game is going to look like an Arena Football game played on a outdoor field. Hawaii is notorious for airing out the ball nearly every play. Coach Holliday is the same way. He wants to come out gunning it all over the field. This game has a chance to become a wild shootout in the west.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Independence 38, Hawaii 35
Chris Fowler: Hawaii 42, Independence 38
Kirk Herbstreit: Independence 38, Hawaii 31
Lee Corso: Hawaii 45, Independence 21

Arizona at #18 North Carolina

North Carolina returns a solid core in their defensive front seven. Arizona has athletes on their defensive line who can get pressure on the quarterback fairly easily. The winner of this game could come down to whichever defense makes a crucial mistake.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: UNC 24, Arizona 16
Chris Fowler: UNC 21, Arizona 17
Kirk Herbstreit: UNC 17, Arizona 14
Lee Corso: UNC 27, Arizona 10

#9 Georgia Tech at Wileyville

Georgia Tech and the triple option has been one of the top rushing offenses in the nation the past few years. They have a good stable of running backs and a quarterback who is integral in this rushing attack, and he can also throw it when he is forced. Defensively, Georgia Tech returns key starters and looks to have a solid defense. The Thunderbirds need to play near perfect to keep this game from getting out of hand.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: GA Tech 24, Wileyville 10
Chris Fowler: GA Tech 21, Wileyville 14
Kirk Herbstreit: GA Tech 27, Wileyville 17
Lee Corso: GA Tech 24, Wileyville 16

Ottawa at Syracuse

Who knows what we will see in this game. Syracuse is a team on the rise and Ottawa is rebuilding after losing nineteen seniors from last year's squad. It could turn into an interesting game or just be one of those average games.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Ottawa 24, Syracuse 16
Chris Fowler: Ottawa 31, Syracuse 14
Kirk Herbstreit: Ottawa 20, Syracuse 17
Lee Corso: Ottawa 31, Syracuse 24

Wake Forest at Caddo

Wake Forest returns many key starters on both sides of the ball. They will have their hands full with this power-rushing attack from Caddo but stacking eight or nine in the box should bolster Wake Forest enough to squeak by in this game.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Wake Forest 21, Caddo 17
Chris Fowler: Caddo 24, Wake Forest 21
Kirk Herbstreit: Caddo 24, Wake Forest 17
Lee Corso: Wake Forest 24, Caddo 20

Michigan State at Mychra

Michigan State returns several key starters, including their quarterback, on offense. That extra year of experience goes a long way for the Spartans, who are expected to contend for the Big 10 crown. On defense, the Spartans are almost as solid as the offense, but a few questions linger. If they can contain Mychra's running attack, the Spartans stand a great chance to win this game.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Michigan State 31, Mychra 17
Chris Fowler: Mychra 24, Michigan State 23
Kirk Herbstreit: Michigan State 27, Mychra 19
Lee Corso: Michigan State 31, Mychra 17

#19 Utah at Pipeline

Pipeline is another one of the pass-happy teams in college football today. Utah's defense better be ready for this team because the Islanders can score in bunches. Defensively for Pipeline is a different story. They are very suspect in their linebacker and secondary positions, while the Ute offense has had a couple seasons to gel.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Utah 48, Pipeline 34
Chris Fowler: Utah 41, Pipeline 24
Kirk Herbstreit: Utah 45, Pipeline 27
Lee Corso: Utah 38, Pipeline 21

#24 Oklahoma State at Grand Valley

Oklahoma State comes in this season looking to improve off of last season's mark. The Cowboys have the keys to surprise people in the Big 12 if they aren't careful. Grand Valley's defense will have to find some way to keep this game close if they hope to pull this out.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: OK St 38, GV 14
Chris Fowler" OK St 41, GV 17
Kirk Herbstreit: OK St 35, GV 16
Lee Corso: OK St 40, GV 14

#12 Pittsburgh at Indiana

Pitt has a Heisman-hopeful in HB Williams. He should have a field day today as the Hoosiers are weak against the run. The Panther defense doesn't have much to worry about either. They can sit back in coverage, waiting for the pass as the Hoosiers struggle in the running game.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Pitt 31, IU 14
Chris Fowler: Pitt 34, IU 10
Kirk Herbstreit: Pitt 30, IU 12
Lee Corso: Pitt 38, IU 12

New Holland at #13 LSU

LSU has a dominant running game and speed to burn on the outside. The Dragons only hope of keeping this game to a manageable level is to hope LSU turns the ball over a few times. Outside of that, LSU is going to dominate both sides of the ball.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: LSU 55, New Holland 14
Chris Fowler: LSU 45, New Holland 16
Kirk Herbstreit: LSU 48, New Holland 21
Lee Corso: LSU 51, New Holland 12

Horizon State at #16 Arkansas

Arkansas has a prolific passing attack coupled with a competitive ground game. Defensively, they like to attack the ball. Horizon State better be prepare to put up some offensive numbers to counter the Razorback attack.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Arkansas 45, Horizon State 24
Chris Fowler: Arkansas 43, Horizon State 20
Kirk Herbstreit: Arkansas 47, Horizon State 17
Lee Corso: Arkansas 41, Horizon State 21

Northern Alaska at #8 Wisconsin

Wisconsin has a powerful running back corp that will just tear through the Drillers defense. The Driller offense is going to even be overmatched against the Badger defense. This game is pretty much a tune up for the Badgers as they prepare for slightly stiffer competition in the next couple of weeks.

Predictions:
Desmond Howard: Wisconsin 56, Northern Alaska 7
Chris Fowler: Wisconsin 59, Northern Alaska 6
Kirk Herbstreit: Wisconsin 49, Northern Alaska 10
Lee Corso: Wisconsin 55, Northern Alaska 6

Re: Welcome to FBS Football: A Different Style Teambuilder Dynasty

Notes from the Corral

Mustangs, Warriors live up to hype in Cheyenne shootout

Cheyenne, WY - The Warriors and Mustangs entered the game with wild expectations. Both teams love the pass and everyone was expecting an Arena Football League style game. Neither team disappointed in that aspect. The game featured 1,192 yards of offense and 1,058 of it came via the pass. In the end, it was decided on Independence's ability to run the ball and play a little defense as the Mustangs came out with the 48-38 victory at The Corral.

The game started off in lightning fashion as both teams came out firing. The quarter ended with the schools putting up fourteen points apiece in the wild quarter, started off by a 90-yard interception return by linebacker Adam Morgan and capped by a 7-yard run by quarterback Randy Matthews.

The pace would slow during the second quarter after Independence scored quickly to take the lead 21-14. The teams would trade possessions until Hawaii was able to tie the game on a 7-play, 66-yard drive, ending with a 4-yard TD pass from Matthews to Small. Hawaii would add a 32-yard FG as the half ended to lead 24-21.

In the second half, Independence took over the game by controlling the clock. They used their short passing game, mixed with a few runs, to drive down the field time and time again.

Hawaii scored on a 19-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 45-38 with 5:14 left. The Mustangs launched on a 14-play, 72-yard drive, consuming 4:28 to ice the game with a 25-yd FG.

Hawaii still fought back, going the length of the field only for Matthews to toss his third interception of the game on the last play. Safety Troy Montgomery hauled in the jump ball in the back of the endzone to seal the shootout win for the Mustangs.

In the game, Hawaii quarterback set a school record for passing yards in a game by going 49-64 for 626 yards.

After the game, Coach Holliday remarked, "Hawaii has a lot of speed at their skill positions. They gave us a run for our money today. We'll enjoy the win tonight and then turn our focus on fixing the issues Hawaii showed us we have. There's no reason someone should throw for that much on us."

The Mustangs were led by freshman quarterback Eric Broussard who took over for Kevin Henry after he dropped with a knee injury in fall practice. He went 26-35 for 432 yards with five TDs to only one interception in being named the player of the game.

Next week, the Mustangs face off against #11-ranked Oklahoma in Norman.

Re: Welcome to FBS Football: A Different Style Teambuilder Dynasty

Snake Bitten

Barnburner ends in heart-breaking loss

Fayetteville, AR - A young Rattler team stepped out to face the explosive offense of Arkansas. They fought hard behind the arm of Cali and the legs of their running game, but in the end, it was the arm of Heisman-hopeful Jeremy Walker that provided the win for the #16-ranked Razorbacks.

From the beginning, Horizon State looked to impose their will in this game. They punished Walker as he released passes and flew to the ball after a run or catch, eventually forcing a punt near midfield.

Horizon State then proceeded on a 15-play, 84-yard drive that ended with an interception in the red zone. Cali's pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and fell into the arms of cornerback Nigel Carter.

Another forced punt and Horizon State was able to drive down for a go ahead FG from Craig Kilgore from twenty yards out.

Walker would be forced into his only miscue on the next Razorback possession as he was intercepted by cornerback Bryan Tillman. This would set up a 5-play, 46-yard drive ending in Matt McMichael's first of three rushing touchdowns, this one from a yard out, to push the Rattler lead to 10-0.

Arkansas would battle back in the second quarter, exploding for twenty-one points behind their offense and defense. The one bright spot for the Rattlers in this quarter was McMichael. He disappeared into the line and found a seam in the defense, going on an 83-yard TD run - the longest in school history. A field goal as time expired in the half brought the Rattlers back to 21-20 after the Razorback explosion.

The third quarter was the quiet before the storm. Neither team could do much but Horizon State managed to get on the board for the quarter's only points to give the Rattlers the lead back, 27-21.

The fireworks came out for the fourth quarter as each team traded scores to start. Horizon State took the lead back 33-28 on Michael Street's second TD reception of the game but the Rattlers could not convert the two-point try with 6:42 left in the game.

Arkansas returned force by running much of the clock off before scoring from a yard out with 1:27 to go. The Razorbacks were able to tack on two points in their conversion attempt to take a three-point lead, 36-33.

The freshman Rattler QB stepped up to the occasion. Using timeouts wisely and moving the chains, he engineered a 6-play, 74-yard drive down the field. The Rattlers scored on McMichael's third rushing TD of the game, this from eleven yards, after Cali changed the play at the line of scrimmage. This gave the Rattlers a 40-36 lead with only 0:31 left on the clock.

Walker came back out with three timeouts and needing a touchdown. He went eighty yards in four plays, helped out by two critical penalties on the Rattler defense, an offsides and a facemask penalty that set up the winning toss with :11 seconds left, a Walker to Phillips TD pass from fifteen yards out.

"They played their hearts out," Arkansas Coach Noel Fisher said after the game. "They should hold their heads high after this game. It was a remarkable effort."

In response, Coach Wylde stated, "We left it all on the field today. I'm proud of our team. They fought hard. I wish we could have pulled this one out but I commend the Razorbacks for playing just as hard. They pulled out a great victory. We'll regroup and get ready for next week."

Heisman-hopeful Walker had this to say about his opponent, "They fought hard. They put some licks on me and did some great things on defense. Their QB played lights-out on that final drive. But in the end, our team was able to pull out the win."

Things do not get much easier for the Rattlers next week as the face #9-ranked Georgia Tech next week, followed by trips to #5-ranked TCU and #13-ranked LSU.

Hoosier Times

Hoosiers pull off upset over #12 Pitt

Bloomington, IN - The Hoosiers entered Memorial Stadium huge underdogs to #12-ranked Pittsburgh. They gave the fans in the stadium something to cheer about. The Hoosiers pulled out a 38-12 win Saturday afternoon over the Panthers.

The Pitt coach had this to say about his teams performance, "We didn't execute at all when we had to. There's no excuse for this poor showing. There's no way they should've beaten us today. We just didn't do our job on either side of the ball. It was a complete mental shutdown of this team in the game."

The Indiana defense came out to shut down Heisman-hopeful, HB Jason Williams, and make Pitt beat them through the air. Traditionally, the Hoosier defense has had issues stopping the run, but they managed to bottle up Williams for most of the game, gaining 76 yards on 21 carries.

The biggest thing from the IU defense was their execution on third down. They only allowed Pitt to covert on 3-of-11 third down attempts.

"When you can get offenses off the field on third down," defensive leader, LB Soren Ericson commented, "you give your offense a spark. It's like us saying we did our job and now go so yours in a great spot."

The Hoosier offense did pick up where the defense left them. Quarterback Brady Hargrave showed a presence in the pocket while leading the offense down the field, making smart decisions each step of the way. He was 17-of-24 for 313 yards with three TDs and no INTs.

The Hoosier ground game, last seen sometime in the 1990's, made a resurgence. HB Adam Robinson led the rushing charge with 124 yards on 25 carries.

"I'm proud of the way our team rallied around each other today," Coach Turner remarked after the game. "Our offensive line came out and controlled the line of scrimmage. Brady made good reads and delivered the ball on target. Adam (Robinson) did a great job running downhill. And our defense. What can I say about our defense? They played with a determination to win."

Indiana has an extra week to prepare for their next game at #4-ranked Virgina Tech. They travel to Blacksburg in two weeks for this match-up and a chance to prove that this victory was no fluke.
