Washington holds off late OSU charge, wins 28-24
Seattle Times, November 20, 2011
Corvallis, OR -- The Huskies had lost three of their previous four games, two of them in heartbreaking fashion. The Beavers made a late charge to try to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, but Washington was able to hold them off for a 28-24 victory Saturday evening at Reser Stadium.
Neither offense was particularly effective, as OSU struggled mightily in the first three quarters. They weren’t turning the ball over or committing penalties, but just couldn’t put things together aside from one drive in the second quarter.
Washington got the scoring started as Keith Price found Jermaine Kearse on an out route for first down yardage, but Kearse was able to slip a tackle and get into the end zone for a 32-yard score.
Following the teams trading a pair of punts, the Beavers mounted their only solid offensive possession of the half, a 73-yard drive in nine plays that including running back Ryan McCants completing a 31-yard pass and hauling in the 14-yard reception that tied the game at seven.
As the UW has shown throughout the season, they were good in their half-ending two-minute drill, moving swiftly down the field mixing the pass and the run. Keith Price threw his second touchdown pass of the game on a quick 11-yard hook to true freshman Austin Seferian-Jenkins with just 15 seconds to play in the half.
The Huskies kept the momentum going into the next period, getting three stops defensively and scoring twice, once on a 19-yard scramble by Keith Price (who finished with a career-high 52 yards rushing) and once on a one-yard run by Chris Polk as they jumped out to a 28-7 lead.
That’s when everything changed. Ryan Katz and Oregon State finally got things going offensively, completing four-of-five passes on the drive, including the final one to true freshman Brandin Cooks on a seven-yard pass with 7:47 remaining. The Beavers forced UW to punt after stuffing Chris Polk on a pair of runs.
After the punt, the big play again bit the Dawgs, as Katz hit Markus Wheaton on a 50-yard pass to immediately put the Beavers in the red zone. A couple Ryan McCants runs went nowhere, but Katz stayed cool on third down and completed a strike to James Rodgers inside the five. It was one of only two catches on the day for the scintillating Rodgers. With the defensive attention on him though, Wheaton, who had the big catch earlier in the drive, was able to thrive. With 5:19 left, he scored on a fly sweep from two yards out to bring OSU within a touchdown.
On the next snap for UW, Keith Price was intercepted by free safety Lance Mitchell, giving Oregon State the ball in good field position. The Washington defense was up to the challenge though and only allowed a field goal, making it 28-24.
That’s how the game ended though as the Huskies offensive line stepped up, pounding out a couple of first downs with Chris Polk, Jesse Callier, and Keith Price all toting the ball a couple times. OSU got the ball back, but it was deep in their own territory and with mere seconds left. This time, the Dawgs did not allow any miraculous deep completions or any other big play, and held on for the win.
This gives Washington eight wins on the season, the most they’ve had since 2001. They face their in-state rivals the Cougars next week for the Apple Cup, which they will be trying to win for the third straight year.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian On the new look offensive line: Wasn’t perfect by any means, but we definitely protected the quarterback a bit better than we had in the previous weeks. I thought Colin Tanigawa brought a mean streak to the line and moving around some of the guys may have allowed them to focus on the little things.
On Keith Price: He was solid today. They’ve been the top-ranked pass defense in our conference and don’t give you many openings. Keith didn’t really force the ball other than the one throw that ended up intercepted. He paid for it and got ready to go the next time out. Other than that, I think he completed over 70% and averaged over 10 yards per completion. We’ll take those kinds of numbers.
Defensive coordinator Nick Holt On the defense: We played awesome against the run tonight. I think we had 13 tackles for loss on about 30 or 35 rushing attempts. If you can get that kind of penetration, you really put them behind the chains and into obvious passing downs.
On who stood out: The whole defensive line was really good. We’ve had games where one or two were solid, but I thought all four of the starters were really making plays. Another guy I saw was Garret Gilliland. We haven’t talked much this year about them, but him and Princeton [Fuimaono] have really done a great job starting as sophomores. Haven’t made many mistakes this year.
On containing James Rodgers: He was out when they played us last year, thankfully. The year before he really hurt us. Desmond Trufant was locked up with him most of the game, just showed what kind of corner he can be. Rodgers is a potential All-American and had just a couple short receptions. If he can do that against that kind of guy, he should be able to shut down just about anybody in the country.
Week 12 – NCAA News
- Three interceptions thrown by Logan Thomas and a late Bryn Renner TD pass did in Virginia Tech in the Thursday night game, as UNC moved to 9-2 on the year.
- Mississippi State converted on 9-of-13 third downs and manhandled Arkansas 49-13.
- SMU led Houston 28-17 late in third quarter, but Case Keenum and company got hot, quickly putting together 22 unanswered points to sneak past the Mustangs. Keenum finished with 473 yard and four touchdowns passing.
- Usually considered run-first quarterbacks, Taylor Martinez and Denard Robinson were both effective via the air, each tossing three TD passes. Martinez was intercepted twice though and also lost a fumble, which turned out to be the difference in a 31-21 Michigan win over Nebraska.
- Penn State gained 547 yards of offense (276 rushing, 271 passing), but needed a four-yard TD run by Silas Redd in the final four minutes to dispose of OSU, sending the Buckeyes to a 6-5 record.
- A seesaw affair in southern California nearly knocked off #4 Boise State. The Aztecs, looking for their second major upset at home this year, led 35-28 inside of six minutes to go. A Kellen Moore scoring pass and a 27-yard field goal with 11 seconds left gave the Broncos another victory.
- #2 Wisconsin, who had rarely been challenged yet this year, fell victim to a feisty Illinois team in Champaign. Troy Pollard ran for three touchdowns as the Illini overcame an early 17-7 deficit.
- Dayne Crist was fantastic again for Notre Dame, throwing for 312 yards and three scores to beat the #24 Eagles, 31-17.
- The LSU defense picked off four passes and Jordan Jefferson went over 300 yards of offense and accounted for three TDs to lead the Tigers over the Rebels.
- Despite 128 yards and two touchdowns rushing by Bryce Brown, Kansas State was unable to overcome an early 21-0 defecit against the #11 Longhorns in Austin.
- Robert Griffin was picked off three times against Oklahoma, one returned 37 yards for a touchdown by Jamel Fleming, as Baylor fell to the Sooners.
- Junior guard Tyler Evans will likely miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn bicep against the Bears.
- Iowa ended their two-game slide by pounding Purdue 35-10.
- USF led 10-0 within the first 10 minutes against the Canes, but Miami fought back to score the next 28 points and beat the Bulls.
- Quarterback Casey Pachall of TCU gained nearly 300 yards of offense and added a 60-yard TD run to lead the Horned Frogs past Colorado State.
- Ryan Tannehill threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, two of which went to Cyrus Gray, who added another score on the ground later as Texas A&M appears primed to jump to #2 in the polls.
- Seminole QB E.J. Manuel was far too much for the Cavalier defense, totaling six touchdowns, one rushing, as FSU rebounded from their loss to Miami with a 48-14 win.
Week 12 – Pac-12 News
- Johnathan Franklin ran for 174 yards and a touchdown against the Buffaloes, but a 91-yard kickoff return for a TD by Toney Clemons sparked Colorado to beat UCLA.
- Autzen Stadium was the scene for a wild shootout between Oregon and USC. Matt Barkley threw for 295 yards and four scores, including a 50-yarder to Rhett Ellison with 4:11 left and an ensuing two-point conversion to tie the game, but also was intercepted three times, including in overtime, allowing Rob Beard to kick the game-winning field goal from 40 yards out.
- Barkley, the Trojans junior signal-caller, may have taken his last snap as a collegian as he went down with a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the rest of the season.
- The Farm was the scene of another old-fashioned shootout, with Zach Maynard and Andrew Luck having the most ammunition. Luck continues to reinsert himself into the Heisman conversation, throwing for 344 yards and four touchdowns and running another score in. Maynard has three TDs and 379 yards passing but was also picked off three times as the Cardinal finish their Pac-12 campaign unbeaten and Cal’s bowl hopes were dashed.
- In spite of four turnovers, Utah easily handled Wazzu in Pullman, taking advantage of the loss by USC earlier in the day to keep their hopes for a Pac-12 South title alive.
- Cameron Marshall of ASU totaled 249 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns, including a 66-yard run in the fourth quarter to ice the game against rival Arizona.
UW begins to fill out recruiting class
Dawgman.com, November 25, 2011
Following their recent victory over Oregon State, the Huskies got commitments from six more recruits, bringing their total to nine players so far in the class of 2012. WRs Atari Patterson and Joe Holt, ATH David Howe, QB Jermaine Stanley, CB Erik Thomas, and P Chris Hicks will all be coming to Seattle next year.
Patterson and Holt headline this group, as they are both considered four-star recruits. The #35 WR in the country, Atari Patterson is a big target at 6’5”, 198 pounds from Fresno, CA while Joe Holt, from Pittsburg, CA measures 6’1” and 188 pounds. Both could see time with the Dawgs losing three wideouts, including leading receiver Jermaine Kearse, to graduation next year. Patterson was considered to be leaning towards going to TCU and also had an offer from Cal. Holt had previously been a soft commit to Mike Stoops and Arizona before changing his mind.
David Howe comes to the UW from nearby North Creek, WA, about a half hour north of Seattle. He doesn’t have blazing speed, but at 6’1”, 220 pounds, could come in and play one of the linebacker positions for the Huskies. Howe also had an offer from Oregon State while considering California and BYU, as well. He is a three-star recruit, rated as the 32nd best athlete.
You like to get one quarterback per class, and coach Steve Sarkisian got a big one in 6’3”, 260 pound Jermaine Stanley from Vallejo, CA, the #33 signal-caller. The three-star Stanley has a big body and big arm that could fit into the pro-style system nicely, reminding some scouts of Daunte Culpepper. He chose the Dawgs over UCLA, Cal, and Arizona State.
#60 Cornerback Erik Thomas is from Tukwila, WA and regarded as a three-star recruit. At 6’1”, 170 pounds, he has the size you look for to cover some of the bigger receivers in the Pac-12. Scouts like his ability to recognize routes and he should have a year to redshirt and get stronger as the Dawgs return most of their defensive backs in 2012. He had one other scholarship offer from Washington State.
Finally, needing someone to replace the booming leg of Kiel Rasp, the Huskies secured the #19 punter in the country in Chris Hicks from Huntington Park, CA. Hicks had also been interested in Stanford and California.
UW has 12 seniors graduating after this season and one open scholarship, so they have the option to sign up to four more players currently. Many consider it likely that junior Chris Polk will declare for the NFL draft though, which may open up another spot.
The Huskies lead 66-31-6 in the history of the Apple Cup... UW has won the last two, including a 35-28 win in Pullman over the Cougars on December 4th last year... Chris Polk ran for 284 yards (second-most in UW history) and two touchdowns on 29 carries to lead Washington to the win... WSU ranks last in the nation in total defense and rushing defense and have given up the seventh most points this season... On offense, the Cougars have scored on just 21-of-37 possessions in their opponents' red zone... Several recruits will be visiting Husky Stadium for official visits this weekend: ATH Brady Whitworth, CB Erik Thomas, CB Corey McNair, QB Jermaine Stanley, TE Brian Johnson, and WR Atari Patterson.

Huskies set records in 75-0 Apple Cup win
Seattle Times, November 27, 2011
Seattle, WA -- The University of Washington broke several school and Apple Cup records as they thrashed the rival Cougars 75-0 Saturday night in Seattle. This also marked the second time in the last three years the Huskies have shut out WSU, who have not scored at Husky Stadium since 2007.
Among the school records broken: largest margin of victory in the modern era, points scored with 75 (both records previously were 66, against Oregon in 1974), touchdowns scored (10), extra points made/attempted (10), and total offensive yards with 762 (previously 734 vs. San Jose State in 1996). Jermaine Kearse tied his own record with four touchdown receptions in a single game.
It was all UW, all evening. The Huskies did not punt during the game and scored on every possession except their last, when they just ran the clock out. Washington closed the season out in dominating fashion and managed to play every player on the roster who is not currently redshirting or injured.
With the victory, the Huskies assured themselves of a nine-win season for the first time since the 2000 Rose Bowl Championship team that finished ranked #3 in the country. They also likely set themselves up for a repeat appearance in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, CA or a trip to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX. The Cougars drop to 1-11 on the year and finish winless in the conference for the second time in three years.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian On winning his third straight Apple Cup: Feels good to pick up a big win. I know we had a few disappointments here towards the end of the season, but we closed out on a very strong note. I know it means a lot to the great fans and alumni of our university to win this trophy once again.
On the overall play: At a certain point, it almost stops being fun. I mean that as no disrespect, but we only ran four different offensive plays in the fourth quarter. We come out here to compete and play hard but don’t want to embarrass anybody.
Week 13 – NCAA News
- LSU got some more late-game magic, as Russell Shepard hauled in a four-yard score from Jordan Jefferson to lift the Tigers over border rival Arkansas.
- North Carolina picked up their 10th win of the year as Bryn Renner threw for 366 yards and five TDs against Duke.
- Finally returning from a broken collarbone for the season finale, Nathan Scheelhaase threw for 399 yards and added 57 on the ground as the Illini pasted Minnesota, 42-10.
- Ohio State beat Michigan for the eighth consecutive time, as three Denard Robinson interceptions cut short drives for the Wolverines.
- Kirk Cousins threw for 303 yards to send Northwestern to their ninth loss of the season. Sophomore RB LeVeon Bell fractured vertebrae in the win and will miss the rest of the season.
- Thanks to Ohio State beating Michigan and the Spartans win, Michigan State will play in the first Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin, a rematch from late-October that was won by the Badgers.
- The Broncos were nearly perfect on the blue turf against Wyoming, winning 80-3. Boise piled up 672 yards of offense and converted 8-of-9 on third down.
- The combination of Montee Ball (158 yards rushing, 2 TD) and Nick Toon (164 yards receiving, 2 TD, rushing TD) allowed Wisconsin to rebound from the loss to Illinois last week and pound Penn State, 48-20.
- The Badgers will be without starting FS Aaron Henry for the rest of the year due to an upper arm fracture.
- Nebraska scored 24 unanswered points in the second quarter to jump out to a 31-3 lead over #12 Iowa and cruised to an easy win. The Hawkeyes lost three of four to close the year.
- Another game, another five touchdown passes for Heisman contender Case Keenum. Tulsa struggled to move the ball consistently with QB G.J. Kinne sidelined and fell to Houston, 38-21.
- Houston will take on Southern Miss in the C-USA Championship next week.
- Mississippi State clinched the SEC West crown as they ran for 270 yards in the Egg Bowl to beat the Rebels, 41-15.
- The Aggies outgained in-state rival Texas 587-165 and completely dominated the Longhorns from the opening whistle. A&M finishes the season at 12-0 and likely clinched a spot in the BCS Championship game.
- Miami turned the football over five times at home against Boston College, but were still able to escape with a 31-26 win over the previously ranked Eagles.
- Stephen Garcia tossed four touchdown passes to keep the momentum going for the Gamecocks as they head into the SEC Championship next week.
- His first season as a head coach may not have gone entirely as planned, but Will Muschamp will get some credit for guiding the Gators past archrival Florida State, 17-7.
- In spite of the loss, FSU will have a rematch with their other in-state rivals, Miami, in the ACC title game.
- Clint Moseley of Auburn torched Alabama in the Iron Bowl for 365 yards and four touchdown passes as the Tigers easily dispatched of the Crimson Tide.
- Freshman Clifton Richardson crossed the goal line twice, including a three-yard run with just over a minute and a half left against #15 Virginia Tech, leading the Cavaliers to a surprising 31-28 win.
Week 13 – Game of the Week
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2) at Stanford Cardinal (12-0)
Week 13 – Pac-12 News
- Outside linebacker Brandon Magee made 12 stops, including six for a loss and two sacks for the Sun Devils as they closed out their regular season with a win over Cal.
- Two top-five teams matched up on the Farm, as Notre Dame traveled to face the Cardinal. It turned into a shootout between Dayne Crist and Andrew Luck. Both QBs went over 300 yards, but Luck also ran for 115 and a score to allow Stanford to finish the regular season unbeaten.
- Cornerback Terrence Brown, a junior for Stanford, will miss the Pac-12 Championship due to broken ribs.
- James Rodgers scored three second-half touchdowns, including a 47-yarder with just 1:15 left in the game to break a 27-27 tie in the Civil War. Rodgers and tight end Joe Halahuni both went over 100 yards receiving as Ryan Katz torched the Ducks defense for four touchdown passes.
- Redshirt freshman Jesse Scroggins made his first start for the Trojans and got a lot of help from senior Marc Tyler, who ran for 130 yards and two TDs against UCLA.
- Jordan Wynn threw four touchdown passes to pace Utah past Colorado, 35-14. The Utes finished tied atop the Pac-12 South with USC, and should advance to the title game due to their head-to-head win over the Trojans in September.
Four more commit after Apple Cup thrashing
Dawgman.com, December 2, 2011
#56 athlete Nick Bell of Waianae, HI called up Steve Sarkisian the Monday after the Apple Cup and said he wanted to be a Husky. The 6’0”, 208 pounder has good speed and decent hands, and will likely put those to work in the UW secondary. The three-star recruit had also been considering Hawai’i and Nevada.
Three-star tight end Brian Johnson did the same. The big 6’6”, 255 pound beast has shown to be an excellent run blocker in Bell Gardens, CA. Rated the #55 tight end, he can also go and get the ball in traffic well, which should make Husky quarterbacks smile. Johnson thought about staying closer to home and going to San Diego State and also had a scholarship offer to Oregon State.
Despite having offers from USC and Oregon, strong safety Brian Brown of Maple Valley, WA, decided to stay home and play for coach Sarkisian. The three-star player is ranked as the #23 SS in the nation and doesn’t really have any one skill that stands out, but does many things very well. Versatility like his should play well for defensive coordinator Nick Holt.
Finally, athlete Brady Whitworth (from Burien, WA), who had made a soft commitment to BYU and also considered Notre Dame, signed his letter of intent to play for Washington. Whitworth, a four-star recruit pegged as the #22 athlete in the class, shows a great tackling ability and is good at reading plays as they develop. He will likely be groomed to play MLB at the next level.
UW has now signed 13 recruits, which is expected to be a full class if there are no transfers or early defections to the NFL.
Week 14 – NCAA News
- In the Thursday night game, West Virginia got two fourth quarter touchdowns, but were unable to overcome the 17-0 lead USF had built in the first three periods. Five turnovers by the Mountaineers contributed to their loss.
- Ed Wesley ran for 105 yards and scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) to lead TCU past UNLV in their final Mountain West game.
- Boise State closed out their regular season on a strong note, outgaining the Lobos 594-114. Kellen Moore threw five TD passes, four of which went to Tyler Shoemaker.
- The Sooners needed 21 fourth quarter points, including 14 in the final 2:31, to top Bedlam Series rival Oklahoma State. Landry Jones threw for three touchdowns and a pick-six was the final nail in the coffin for the Cowboys, who fell to 9-3 on the year.
- Robert Griffin was on point throwing the ball against Texas, completing 26-of-38 passes for 306 yards and four TDs while the Longhors struggled on offense again in their second straight loss.
