Game Notes
North Texas is once again facing a team that beat them last year. This year should be different though. North Texas has to to be one of the best teams in the conference so far and Memphis has shown to be the complete opposite. Look for North Texas to take advantage in this home game and earn another win in their pursuit for promotion.

North Texas gets revenge

Avenges another loss from last year

Photobucket

Denton, TX -- Rushing is the name of the game and what the University of North Texas does best. The Mean Green gained over 200 yards on the ground and carried their team to victory against the University of Memphis.

In what was a closely contested game last year proved to be another close game this year with North Texas winning this year's edition by a score of 24-19. A game which continues the streak of embarrassment for Memphis as they still have not gained a win this year.

Things started off well for Memphis as they gained the first lead of the game after a 38 yard field goal but North Texas wouldn't stay down for long. Two drives later North Texas would take the lead after Patrick Smith punched it into the end zone from 5 yards out to take the lead.

Both teams would trade blows but it wouldn't be of any consequence until early in the second quarter when Memphis would knock in another field goal to close the gap. It would stay that way at the end of the first half and would continue until near the end of the third quarter when North Texas would kick a 38 yard field goal to increase their lead.

Memphis would come and take the lead early in the fourth quarter with a 2 yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Wright to Nelson Rivera. North Texas would answer immediately after that when Freshman Josh Barrett would take the ball up the gut for 25 yards and a touchdown. Barrett would replace Patrick Smith who suffered a mild concussion late in the first half and sat out the rest of the game.

Another Freshman Joel Coleman would then punch in a goal line run to extend the Mean Green lead. Memphis would refuse to die and would score a touchdown with a minute left as Wright would hook up with Justin Gordon for 22 yards. North Texas would recover the onside kick and that would be the end of it for Memphis as North Texas would hold on for the 19-24 win.

Memphis 19, North Texas 24
MEM Passing: Wright, 20/37, 290 Yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
MEM Rushing: Johnson, 26 Rush, 101 Yards
MEM Receiving: Rivera, 6 Rec, 60 Yards, 1 TD

NT Passing: Hughes, 7/20 151 Yards
NT Rushing: Smith, 23 Rush, 99 Yards, 1 TD
NT Receiving: Gibson, 3 Rec, 61 Yds

Next: @ New Mexico (1-6, 0-2)
New Mexico was the conference leader last year when North Texas defeated them last year and afterwards they were a bottom dweller. This year they have continued the trend so far and will be an easy win next week. Their game against Memphis will decide which one will likely by relegated.

Add me to the chorus of "really inventive concept". With all the conference realignment going on in real life, this makes as much sense as anything else... maybe even more. Keep up the good work!

Wrong turn in Albuquerque

Mean Green drop a crucial game to New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM -- Things started off well for North Texas but this cold day in Albuquerque would not end well for the Mean Green. The University of New Mexico dashed what ever way they wanted through the North Texas defense and shut down their offense after a explosive first quarter.

Things started off well for North Texas as Jason Johnson would return a interception 43 yards for a touchdown to open up the game. New Mexico would answer right back as Johnson would hit Bray on a deep pass for a 71 yard touchdown to tie up the game. Smith and Hughes would score back to back on rushes to give North Texas the 21-7 lead. However, New Mexico would claw back after a 30 yard pass from Johnson to Washington. In the second quarter New Mexico would have Woods kick a 36 yard field goal and Johnson would throw another touchdown pass to end the first half.

The second half wouldn't consist of much action as the only scoring of the third quarter would come from a 26 yard pass form Johnson to Smith to widen the gap to 31-21. Then New Mexico would score again twice in the 4th quarter to finish off what would be an ugly game for the Mean Green as they would lose 45-21.

North Texas 21, New Mexico 45
UNT Passing: Hughes - 8/17, 72 Yards
UNT Rushing: Smith - 16 Rush, 107 Yards, 1 TD
UNT Receiving: Gibson - 2 Rec, 38 Yards

UNM Passing: Johnson - 24/39, 478 Yards, 5 TD, 2 Int
UNM Rushing: Smith - 23 Rush, 122 Yards, 1 TD
UNM Receiving: Washington - 5 Rec, 136 Yards, 1 TD

Week 12: Troy Trojans (5-3) @ North Texas Mean Green (6-3)
Saturday November 10th 2012 - 3:30 P.M. - No Broadcast

Fouts Field

North Texas, coming off a tough loss against New Mexico, looks to tune up before some final games this season in a non-league game against the Troy Trojans. Both teams have had pretty successful seasons but are polar opposites. North Texas makes its living on the ground, while Troy is a master of the passing game. Last year's game was an exciting shootout down to the final seconds, expect this game to be much of the same.

Troy's Key Players
QB Jordan Newsome (rJR - 91 OVR) 142/235, 1913 Yards, 14 TD, 4 Int
HB Matt Malone (rSR - 84 OVR) 91 Rush, 579 Yards, 6 TD
WR Cory Talley (JR - 79 OVR) 40 Rec, 512 Yards, 5 TD

SS Travis Phillips (JR - 79 OVR) 17 Tackles, 11 Assisted Tackles, 1 Int, 3 Pass Deflections, 1 Fumble Recovery

North Texas’s Key Players

Recap

The rain came down today in Denton, TX causing a sloppy game for both teams in today's match up. Things got off to a quick start for Troy as Jordan Newsome hit Corey Talley on a 61 yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game to get Troy out to an early lead. North Texas would hand the ball of to Patrick Smith to start their first drive of the game and he would gain a first down, but a holding penalty and an incomplete pass would cause a punt for the Mean Green on their first drive. Troy would try for the quick strike again and after a couple of rushes and passes, Halfback Benny James would score from 11 yards out on a draw play to increase the Troy lead. North Texas would then march down the field on the legs of Smith and would finally punch it in from 4 yards out with freshman Josh Barrett. Both teams would share a possession and punt the ball. Troy would get the ball and start a drive and the first quarter would end in the middle of it after Newsome was sacked for an 8 yard loss.

Barrett rushes for a touchdown

However, on the next play to start the second quarter, Newsome would find Rose for 24 yards for a touchdown. North Texas wouldn't be able to respond as Josh Barrett couldn't gain more than one first down, now since he is the main rusher with Patrick Smith out for the game with a strained tricep, and North Texas would punt the ball. Troy would fumble the ball on the first play and North Texas would recover and Jon Hughes would rush in from 11 yards to score shortly thereafter. Newsome would then start a drive and move the Trojans down the filed but it would not be enough as Troy was forced to punt. North Texas would fumble on a fourth down try in Troy territory and Troy would capitalize on the mistake by marching down the field and kicking 26 yard field goal. North Texas would then start moving the ball down the field and Hughes would find some receivers for some big yards but the drive would be cut short as Hughes would throw an interception. Troy would capitalize by marching down the field once again behind the arm of Newsome and James would punch in another touchdown on the ground, this time from 2 yards out. North Texas would get the ball and be forced to punt once again after an uneventful drive. Troy would then run out the clock to end the first half.

Hughes breaks out the pocket for a rushing TD

North Texas would start off with the ball and march down the field but stall once again and be forced to punt. Troy would gain a couple of first downs through the air but the Mean Green defense would step up and stop the air attack and force the Trojans to punt. North Texas could not capitalize on the stop though and would go three and out and punt right back to the Trojans. Troy would then throw an interception on the second play to the Mean Green to start a streak of sloppy play by both teams. North Texas would get some decent rushes on the next drive but a holding penalty will negate any momentum and the Mean Green would punt the ball. The Mean Green defense would step up once again and stop the Trojans and force a punt. On the first play of the ensuing drive the Mean Green would fumble the ball and Troy would recover and take the fumble back for a touchdown. North Texas would be stopped once again, this time on a three and out and would punt so Troy would begin the fourth quarter with the ball.

Edwards return the fumble for a touchdown

Troy would start the quarter with the ball and be forced to a three and out and would kick the ball back to the Mean Green. North Texas would then throw three straight incompletions and punt the ball. On the first play for Troy, Newsome would throw another interception to the Mean Green. North Texas would not be able to capitalize and would be forced to punt the ball after a three and out. Troy would also be stopped to a three and out and punt the ball right back to the Mean Green. North Texas would punt again as it seems they could not get anything going on offense with the injury to Smith. As Troy started to get a drive going on the next possession, it would be stopped as Newsome would throw his third interception of the game to end the drive. North Texas would rush the ball and be stopped, but on a gutsy fourth down call Hughes would bind Robinson wide open on a go route for a 77 yard touchdown. The two point conversion would be no good and Troy would recover the onside kick and run out the clock to win the game, 38-20.

Robinson breaks away for a touchdown
