Stanford strongarms Duke Cardinal clicks on all cylinders three time zones over
DURHAM, NC - When you win your first two games by a combined score of 102-7, sometimes it's hard to find things to complain about. For Stanford coach Brian Kudron, it turned out to be easy.
"Our players did the complaining for me," he said. "Our defense was upset about giving up the long play for the touchdown in the first half. Near the end of the game, I was trying to sub in the second stringers, and Shayne (Skov) and Mike (Thomas) are almost yelling at me, saying they're not going off the field, as the offense starts to drive. So they lobby and convince me, so I leave them in, and they get the stop and the pick six."
That pick six was cornerback Johnson Bademosi's 103 yard interception return late in the fourth quarter, putting the exclamation point on Stanford's 58-7 rout of Duke. Outside of being caught on their heels at times by Duke's fast-paced passing attack, the Cardinal was essentially perfect, clicking in every facet of the game. Andrew Luck showed no signs of the mild concussion he suffered last week, completing 60% of his passes for 272 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Stepfan Taylor and Anthony Wilkerson were again unstoppable on the ground.
Defensively, Skov led the way with seven tackles, Max Bergen and Matthew Masifilo each had a sack, and Usua Amanam had a pick in addition to Bademosi.

The Cardinal and Wildcats have similar numbers offensively, albeit in different manners: Stanford, despite having Andrew Luck, still relies on using the running game to punish defenses, while Arizona has a high-flying passing attack led by quarterback Nick Foles and receivers Juron Criner, Dan Buckner, David Douglas, and tight ends Drew Robinson and Jack Baucus. Stanford's ferocuous pass rush will pin their ears back, as Arizona starts freshmen at both tackle spots, and will have to establish some kind of running game to keep Stanford at bay.
Where the two teams are separated, however, is on the defensive side of the ball. Granted, Arizona had to face Oklahoma State's offensive juggernaut, but the difference in talent between the two defenses is evident. Arizona has a couple solid linebackers in Jake Fischer and Paul Vassallo, and, despite being shredded last week, a normally reliable secondary with corners Robert Golden, Trevin Wade and Shaq Richardson, and safeties Adam Hall and Brandon Flowers. The Wildcats lack depth and talent up front, however, and their best pass rusher CJ Parish will miss the game with a sprained wrist. That deficiency up front spells big trouble going up against Stanford's mauling offensive line and bruising stable of running backs.

Rope-a-Dope Gritty Stanford shows off some glitz against Arizona
TUCSON, AZ - Coming into the game, it was supposed to be Stanford's mauling rushing attack against Arizona's explosive air raid.
Somebody didn't tell that to the Cardinal.
Heisman favorite Andrew Luck put on a show Saturday, throwing for a school record 467 yards and five touchdowns, as #4 Stanford put 41 straight points on the board to crush the dazed Wildcats, 48-13.
"We thought it'd be fun to remind everyone who the best quarterback in America is," Stanford coach Brian Kudron said with a grin after the game. Glibness aside, however, the offensive strategy was dictated, to a point at least, by Arizona's defense. The Wildcats put up a valiant effort against the Cardinal's running attack, stacking the box, run blitzing, and winning the battle in the trenches much more than one would expect against Stanford's elite offensive line.
Ultimately it didn't matter, as Kudron simply put the game in the hands of his elite quarterback. Luck was surgical, spreading the ball to seven different receivers and throwing three long touchdown bombs - two of which went to Chris Owusu, who put up an eye-popping 204 yards receiving.
Defensively, Stanford gave up one long touchdown to Arizona's passing attack, but otherwise kept Nick Foles and his stable of wideouts in check. Shayne Skov led the team with nine tackles, and the defense racked up five sacks. They failed to force a turnover though, giving their coach the much needed item he needs to focus on headed into the buy week.
