DUBLIN, Ireland - In his first ever start for the Fighting Irish, quarterback Everett Golson looked amazing. Since Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen's departure from Notre Dame, the quarterbacks of the university have looked fairly average. They've had Crist and Rees who have only managed mediocre stats, at best. Now, even though this is only the first game, Golson, a sophomore who was redshirted last year, looks like he may be the starter for the next three years. Although Gunner Kiel may challenge him for that next year after he comes off his redshirt.

During the first half, Golson managed to throw three touchdown passes to three different Irish players. Perhaps, this is just a show of how good the Notre Dame receivers are this year, or it could be just how good of a quarterback Golson is. Navy really had no way to defend the quick receivers of the Irish and constantly found themselves trailing them. The rain didn't help them much either, as several defenders fell to the ground in an attempt to quickly turn around and cover. Rain didn't exactly stop the Midshipmen from running, as their quarterback would constantly sneak through the middle for a big gain. With only minutes to go in the first half, Navy starting quarterback Miller would get drilled by Te'o and would have to be helped off the field. Fortunately, he only suffered bruised ribs and will make his return next week.

Golson connects with Toma on a 53 yard touchdown pass.
The third quarter would start out with another Golson touchdown pass. This one a 64 yard pass to DaVonte Neal, which would be his second touchdown grab of the night. Soon after, Navy would march down the field for another field goal. Just like their last one, it had soon ended thanks to the offenses inability to move the ball in the redzone. The rain would continue to be a problem for the Midshipmen, as later in the third they would throw a pick. This interception brought on after the ball slipped from the backup quarterback's hand. Navy would be unable to bring Jackson down, as he ran the ball back for a touchdown.

After taking a commanding 42-6 lead, Brian Kelly decided to bench his starters and give the backups a little playing time. Only 52 seconds into the final quarter, the Irish would make a questionable call and throw a touchdown. While this is a rivalry game, this one was built out of respect. It was odd seeing Kelly tell his players to run a passing play, but it can be seen as a warning to potential players. This Notre Dame team will not quit, as some critics had believed they had in their USC game last year.

With this win, Notre Dame pushes their win total in the rivalry to 72 and has won two straight against the Midshipmen. Notre Dame will now head back to South Bend to play another rival, Purdue. In the Shillelagh Trophy rivalry, Notre Dame holds the current edge 36-19 and hold the all-time series record 55-26. They will be looking to demolish Purdue for the fifth straight year, with their last loss from Purdue coming in 2007.

Bennett Jackson picks the pass off and returns it for a touchdown.

SOUTH BEND, Indiana - After the Navy game last Saturday, two weaknesses of the Irish were exposed. They lacked a good pass defense and a good running offense. Sure, they held the Midshipmen to only 219 yards through the air. That seems really good, until you learn that Navy is an option team. A team that primarily rushes the ball shouldn't have that great of a day passing the ball. The Boilermakers could barely find any open receivers and would often resort to throwing to their running back, who would usually be tackled for a loss. Purdue would only manage 71 yards through the air.

Running the ball seemed to be a challenge against Navy's defense last week. Wood would constantly be put into the ground before he could get very far past the line. The line didn't do a great job of protecting him at all and constantly allowed defenders to get to him. Going up against a top rushing defense made it seem like the Irish didn't have a chance, though Purdue had obtained that stat through a game against Eastern Kentucky. That didn't stop people from talking about the struggles Notre Dame would have running. They were quickly shut-up after Cierre Wood run through a huge opening for a touchdown. He would later go on to score two touchdowns and rush for 127 yards.

Golson finds a wide open Jones for his only touchdown pass of the day.
The Irish would once again continue to struggle to defend the run. This time it would be against a running back. On just 11 rushes, Bolden would take of for a 136 yards. His first touch of the day resulted in a 75 yard touchdown run. "When Bolden scored that touchdown early, my heart sunk. What was that a 70-something yard run? I was a little worried about how well we would do. Of course, that Golson interception only a few minutes after didn't help too much. Still, my players shook off that early game jitters and broke the game wide open. This is what we need heading into the harder part of our schedule." - Coach Brian Kelly.

Besides the starters, another man made quite the name for himself today. Riddick would be an absolute monster in receiving punts. On six returns, he piled up a total of 116 yards. His first return was nearly a touchdown, but the punter managed to stop him just short after he ran 70 yards. The Purdue punt returner? Well, they really had no need for him today. Almost every Irish drive ended in a score of some sort. Only one drive they did not score on, and that was when Golson's pass was intercepted in the first quarter. It's easy to win when the opposing defense can't stop you.

The Irish will be heading to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans to battle for the Megaphone Trophy. These two teams have had some classic games and have had a Game of the Century back in the '66 which ended in a tie. The rivalry series has been close between these two, 32-26, but the Irish have a huge lead in the all-time series, 46-28. The trophy has changed hands in almost every game over the last ten years, with Michigan State managing to hold onto the trophy for two straight years. Notre Dame dominated the Spartans in their last meeting, 31-13.

Game Notes
Notre Dame comes into this game having defeated rivals Navy and Purdue pretty convincingly. Michigan State, despite being ranked higher, has suffered one defeat at the hands of Boise State in week one. Michigan State then went onto defeat Central Michigan last week. Notre Dame may have the advantage due to the many injuries to impact players on the Spartans. Herbstreit predicts that the Irish will win this one.
