BACK ON TRACK
ESU recovers with big win at Texas State

San Marcos, Texas - After an embarrassing loss at Auburn last week ESU was in need of a bounce back game to get their confidence back. Queue Texas State. The newcomers to FBS football provided an easy path to the Timberwolves 4th win. Flash James was serviceable as he starting back in place of the injured Kyle Sparks. James picked up 65 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 16 carries. Zickafoose saw some reps at HB as well, he gained 41 yards on 10 carries and also scored once. Zickafoose got banged up and Coach Collins used Kemmerer in the backfield, he went for 27 yards on 5 carries and scored once. “We worked Kemmerer in the backfield some in practice this week, he looked pretty good back there so we knew if we got in a bind we could lean on him.” Coach Collins said after the game. Kemmerer also added 81 yards and a score on 5 receptions.

Texas State kept things close through the first quarter when they made it 14-7 on an 11 yard Rutherford to Gilmore touchdown pass. ESU had scored on a 1 yard James run and a 53 yard pass from Drake to Jones.

The second frame was all ESU. Zickafoose ran one in from 3 yards out. Kemmerer scored from 17 yards out on his first rushing attempt. Later in the quarter Kemmerer scored on a 36 yards Drake pass.

ESU added 14 more points in the third, on a 14 yard James run and an 80 yard Drake to Price swing pass. ESU led 49-7 at the start of the 4th.

Drake hit Chester on a 22 yard TD pass and Draggo added a field goal from 22 yards out later in the fourth. Texas State added a late Rutherford to Battle TD against the ESU 2nd team defense.

The true star of the game for ESU was QB Zack Drake. Drake was 21/35 for 410 yards and 4 touchdowns with no turnovers.

ESU heads to Georgia Tech next week.
