Re: The Journey of Ross Jones (NCAA 13)

Minutemen Picked to Finish Last in MAC

Amherst (MA) - The votes are in and it looks like UMass is in the same position as they were last season. After finishing with a 2-10 record and finishing last in the MAC a season ago, the coaches and media have voted and the Minutemen aren't predicted to improve much from last season.

With a new head coach and new offensive coordinator, the team isn't getting the love from the voters, but the team remains optimistic.

"I think we are going to shock some people," redshirt sophomore starting quarterback Mike Wegzyn said. "Fall practice has been going well and I really like what Coach Jones is doing with us on the field. He is putting us in a position to succeed. A lot of the new guys on offense are really rallying together and giving us a new found hope.

We were terrible on offense a season ago. I don't think anyone is thinking we are going to be like that. Coach Jones is really installing a great offense. He is using principles from a few play books, but it is mainly a pro style offense with shorter throws and using angles and space to create plays."

While the leader of the offense is excited about the prospects for this season, Coach Jones doesn't want to jump to any conclusions.

"I'm not going to say what our expectations are on offense, but we really want to control the clock and give our team the best chance to win. UMass is going to be a completely different team compared to last year. I have faith in our offense, in Mike, and in our team," Coach Jones said.

UMass begins the year on the road at Minnesota.

UMass Upsets B1G Minnesota in Minneapolis 24-17

Wegzyn gets hit as he finds Blanchflower down the seam for a big game - AP

Minneapolis (MN) - UMass (1-0) found its groove on offense after a slow start and the Minutemen upset a power conference opponent Minnesota (0-1) 24-17.

When UMass hit the field in the 2nd half, it was a familiar sight. The team was trailing 17-7 and it looked like another loss to a lot of UMass fans.

It wasn't.

"This team proved that it really is different from what I saw on film last year. My offense got it going after a few struggles in the 1st half. We really couldn't get into a rhythm and struggled to find open receivers. Mike was forcing a few throws and I didn't think it was going well."

The defense for UMass struggled in the 1st half as well.

After jumping out to a 7-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter, Minnesota tied it quickly with a 71 yard pass by Nelson to Jones.

They went on to 17 straight points and a 17-7 lead.

"We talked at half-time and really got focused on what we had to do. I called a few easier plays to start the second half and then Wegzyn hit Blanchflower deep down the seam when he was getting sacked and that really gave our offense confidence. We got a field goal on that possession and that set us up for a great finish in the 4th quarter."

UMass now returns home 1-0 and ready to take on the Vandals of Idaho in Amherst.

Re: The Journey of Ross Jones (NCAA 13)

UMass Closes Strong in 4th, Beats Idaho

Wegzyn hits Burnette on the Screen for a 38 Yard TD - AP

Amherst (MA) - There seems to be a few differences so far this season for the Minutemen.

This team has a potent offense, so far. And this team can close.

UMass (2-0) used a 20-point 4th quarter to put away Idaho (0-1) 48-21 in Amherst for their home-opener win.

"We're finishing," said Coach Ross Jones. "That is huge in the grand scheme of things. If we can get confidence closing in the 4th quarter we will be set for this season. It felt great to get things going really well in this game and we played a good four quarters."

The Minutemen got off to a quick start on offense. UMass led 14-0, but the Vandals answered with a kickoff return for a touchdown that cut the lead to 14-7.

UMass needs to tighten up its defense. They gave up a 47 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter that cut the lead to just 7, but UMass answered in the 4th quarter with its three touchdowns.

"Burnette is really a weapon out of the backfield. We hit him a few times on some screens and this is the 2nd straight game that he has gone over 100 yards of total offense. He even hit 200 yards today. He is so elusive in the open field. He was setting up his blocks really well. I'm excited about the way that he recovered from fumbling last game against Minnesota.

UMass moves to 2-0 and has a bye week next week.

Re: The Journey of Ross Jones (NCAA 13)

Coach Jones, UMass Use Bye-Week to Reboot, Recruit

Amherst (MA) - On the bye week offensive coordinator Ross Jones is game planning for one of the most difficult opponents of the year, National Runner-Up Western Kentucky (2-0) and also hitting the road.

"The Hilltoppers made it to the National Championship Game last year. They know how to win. They know how to play winning football. This will be a big test. A barometer for where we are in our own rebuilding project. Of course if we win, it doesn't mean we are going to be in the National Championship, but it does mean we are making progress."

The Hilltoppers lost to Kansas State last season and the Minutemen weren't even in a bowl game. The programs are far apart and Coach Jones knows that.

"We just need to continue improving and take each week at a time. I know that I am doing everything to make sure the offense is ready for the challenge."

On the Trail

One thing that coaching staff needs to continue to do is recruit. The staff hit the road after a few days of preparation for next week.

A few of the players that seem to be receiving heavy interest from Coach Jones are dual threat quarterbacks/athletes.

Coach Jones is dreaming big with ATH Chris Pollard. Pollard, a native of Parsippany-Troy, NJ has offers from both Rutgers and UMass.

The 6-foot 2, 208-pound ATH says Rutgers and UMass are neck and neck.

"I'm not sure one is leading over the other. I would say that I am intrigued by both. Both are close to home. Both offer an opportunity to play in a great offense. Coach Jones seems to be turning things around at UMass and I would love to be apart of that. On the other hand, Rutgers is my home state school and they are building something great there as well."

Another quarterback/athlete that the Minutemen seem to be interested in is ATH Mike Talley. The Roseville, CA native has UMass at the top of his list.

"Right now UMass is definitely my leader. I need to get over there on a visit and I think I will do that next week. If everything goes well I could see myself in Amherst."

UMass is also picking things up on the defensive side of the ball as well, targeting CB Thomas Jackson (#4 CB, #1 recruit in MA) from Beverly, MA and CB John Burke (#8 CB, #5 recruit in NJ) from Madison, NJ.

Look for more updates soon as the Minutemen continue to up their recruiting if they continue their success on the field.

Re: The Journey of Ross Jones (NCAA 13)

Minutemen Blitz Hilltoppers

Campbell tackled at the 4 yard line after 57 Yard Pass from Wegzyn - AP

Amherst (MA) - The bye-week did UMass (3-0) justice as they came out ready to play and beat Western Kentucky (2-1) 44-28.

Coming off of a National Championship game appearance the Hilltoppers had a target on their backs and the Minutemen exposed a lot of their weaknesses.

"We thought we could throw on them and we did," Coach Jones said. "Wegzyn really did a nice job recovering from a few interceptions and found our guys to stay on top."

The Hilltoppers jumped out front 7-0 on a 2 yard run by Andrews. However, for the first time this season, the Minutemen had an answer.

UMass scored in the 1st quarter for the first time this season when Wegzyn found a streaking Armstrong in the endzone to cut into the Western Kentucky lead.

They coupled that with a 4 yard run by Smith and the Minutemen had the lead, 13-7.

Western Kentucky struck again with Andrews on the ground and regain the lead, but UMass answered with two TDs to end the half and took a 27-14 lead into the break.

UMass again scored first in the 3rd quarter and it was over from there.

Despite the win, UMass lost freshman RB Patrick Burnette for the game and possibly a few weeks with broken ribs.

"That is a big loss for our offense. Over the first 3 games he had accumulated over 400 yard of total offense. Now we have to replace that. His lack of running threat really decreased his success on the screen pass that he was hurt on. Hopefully we can fill the void while he is out of the lineup."

UMass moves to 3-0 on the year and has one more non-conference game before the MAC schedule begins.
