Re: Fear the Turtle: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty

Defense Falters, Terps Lose First Game

When Wes Brown ran the first play from scrimmage 78 yards for a touchdown, many Terps fans figured they had this one in the bag; especially after Perry Hills scampered for a 3-yard TD run on the next series. But the defense simply couldn't stop the passing attack of the Huskies. Perry Hills recorded his first INT of the season, a careless throw that ultimately didn't hurt the team. What really hurt was a fumble by Hills at the goal line. That score would have been the difference in the loss.

The Terps move on to face #4 West Virginia on Saturday on the road. It'll be a nearly impossible game to win, and most Terps fans just hope their team can keep it close.

Re: Fear the Turtle: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty

Edsall Names Brown Starter

After 3 weeks of good running, Randy Edsall has named freshman RB Wes Brown the starting running back for your Maryland Terrapins. Just weeks after saying the team would use a "running back by committee", the coach decided to scrap that and name the very productive Brown as the starter.

"The running back by committee was more used to find a starter, and Wes showed us he was that starter right out of the gate. His one bad game was the Temple game [20 carries, 48 yards], but in each other game he's rushed for over 125 yards on 18 carries, and at least one score. He'll continue to get the bulk of the carries for us. He's a great power back, but also has surprising speed that can catch the defense off-guard. You saw that in the last game when he took the first play of the game right up the middle 78 yards to the house."

It's not surprising that Edsall named Brown the starter. The 4-star recruit was very highly thought of when he first got to College Park, and is now the Terps' starting running back going into their game against West Virginia.

Terps' Comeback Fails

Well, they made it interesting. The Terps were down 21-3 at one point, but came all the way back to ultimately lose to #4 West Virginia 31-24. They were just 20 yards away from scoring the game-tying touchdown when the final whistle sounded. It's a heartbreaking loss for sure.

QB Perry Hills was forced to throw the ball 55 times, and ultimately outperformed senior Geno Smith. But it simply wasn't enough. Something to note is that RB Wes Brown suffered a concussion in the 2nd quarter, but should be ready by the Terps' game against Wake Forest in 2 weeks.

Re: Fear the Turtle: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty

Bye Week

The Terps have their Bye Week this week after going 2-2 (0-0 ACC) in their non-conference schedule. They enter exclusively into ACC play now, with their first 2 games coming vs. Wake Forest and at rival Virginia. Let's take a quick look at how this season has progressed so far for the Terps:

QB Perry Hills was forced into a starting role after C.J. Brown went down with a torn ACL. Hills has done well in his short time as starter, and has done a decent job limiting turnovers. There have been games where he has been asked to throw the ball much more than planned, and he's responded well. Still, he's better suited throwing the ball 20-35 times a game.

The running game has shown flashes of greatness, but overall has been mediocre. The offensive line has been horrible. Perry Hills has had no time to set and throw, and has had to resort to short passes rather than getting to the deeper routes. He has been sacked way too many times, and it's a miracle he hasn't gotten injured yet. Randy Edsall is recruiting a few offensive linemen, and is hopeful to get a commitment from 4-star LT Derwin Gray, a local product from Washington, DC.

Terps Win Wild One, 27-24

Trailing 24-20 with just 23 seconds left in the game, the Terps needed a score, fast. Hills drops back, Leak makes an incredible double move. Hills arcs the pass, Leak catches. Touchdown! Maryland wins!

One of the more exciting games for the Terps over the years, and definitely one to remember for QB Perry Hills. He really shone in this game despite turning the ball over 3 times. His guts and determination were what won this game. The Terps move to 3-2 (1-0 ACC) with this win, and head off to Charlottesville, VA to face the Cavaliers.

Terps Lose to UVA 44-41 in Double OT

After one of the most exciting wins in the past few years, the Terps suffered one of their most heartbreaking losses to UVA this afternoon. After leading for most of the game, the Cavaliers forced double overtime, and the Terps folded. Injuries early in the game by Stefon Diggs and Wes Brown really hurt Maryland going forward.

The Terps fall to 3-3 (1-1 ACC) with this loss, and head home to College Park next weekend to face the miracle #3 N.C. State Wolfpack, who stand at 5-0 (2-0 ACC) on the season.

Re: Fear the Turtle: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty

Maryland Falls to #3 N.C. State

The Terps were simply no match for the #3 team in the nation. Perry Hills was off his game, throwing 2 picks. Wes Brown couldn't find the holes, and Brandon Ross couldn't do much either (though he proved to be a valuable backup returner to the injured Stefon Diggs).

The game was well in the hands of the Wolfpack when coach Randy Edsall removed Hills and put in backup QB Devin Burns, who ran all over the N.C. State defense en route to an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Nigel King on a play-action. It is not expected that Burns will take Hills' job, but if he does then Maryland fans can expect to see him run the same offense they saw him run today: no-huddle spread option full of read options and speed options. It's a totally different offense from what Perry Hills runs, but similar to the one C.J. Brown would have run if he had been healthy this season.

The Terps head up to Boston College to face the 3-4 Eagles on Saturday. They really need a win there to have a chance at a bowl game this season.

Re: Fear the Turtle: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty

Terps Beat Boston College 30-20

The Terps got the bounce-back win they were looking for. After falling to #3 N.C. State last week, they opened an offensive explosion in the first half against Boston College. Wes Brown and Albert Reid injured themselves partway through the game, and Stefon Diggs remains injured. Perry Hills ran the read option a few times and showed that his legs are improving quite a bit. He even scored on a 6 yard run in the 1st quarter. He's also doing a better job of holding onto the ball recently after fumbling way too much earlier in the year.

The Terps head home to face Georgia Tech next week, hoping to get a win closer to bowl eligibility.
