Glennon Outplays Smith As Bucs Open Preseason With Downing Of Jets

The first kickoff of the 2013 NFL exhibition season brought the most interesting matchup of the Friday night games, with rookie quarterbacks Geno Smith of the Jets and Mike Glennon of the Bucs going head-to-head most of the way. This year’s draft served notice that Josh Freeman is not secure in his current spot as Tampa Bay’s starter and the days of New Yorks’ Sanchize era are numbered. Glennon had the better night of the two, with a higher completion percentage and a touchdown pass. While Smith didn’t give Jets fans a lot to get excited about, he wasn’t horrible either. The biggest star of the night turned out to be Tampa’s undrafted rookie receiver Jheranie Boyd of UNC, who caught two long touchdown passes, one from Glennon and one from veteran backup Dan Orlovsky.

Many were hoping to see a Darrelle Revis pick of Mark Sanchez, but the two weren’t on the field long enough for the event to materialize. Sanchez only attempted 3 passes in his two series, but completed all of them, including a 23 yard touchdown to Stephen Hill for the Jets’ only trip to the end zone.

Re: Flying High Again | Philadelphia Eagles

Flynn Takes Early QB Lead In Raiders' Loss To Vikes

Our next glimpse into what other teams are doing as the preseason begins takes us to Oakland, where the Vikings paid a visit for the Friday nightcap.

The biggest question for the Raiders has been after the trading away of Carson Palmer and the trade for Matt Flynn, was the starting QB job Flynn’s by default or was there going to be a battle involving Terrelle Pryor and/or rookie Tyler Wilson? The Flynn deal and the 4th round selection of Wilson don’t aren’t exactly ringing endorsements of Pryor, but Flynn has already been beaten out by a mid-round rookie once, and after his junior season (and prior to the Bobby Petrino fiasco at Arkansas), some projected Wilson as a first round pick. For the Silver & Black’s initial foray into exhibition play, head coach Dennis Allen planned to evenly distribute the playing time among the signal-callers, with Flynn starting, Pryor playing the middle third, and Wilson taking the stage for Act III. Each one threw a touchdown pass, but the completion percentages ended up ranking in line with their levels of experience- 71% for Flynn, 60% for Pryor, and 55% for Wilson. Wilson, however, did have the night’s longest completion for either team- a 43 yard strike to Rod Streater, who made a leaping catch. While the Raiders posted an acceptable 302 passing yards, their ground game was struck in neutral- the team’s longest run was 8 yards by Jeremy Stewart.

The player on the Minnesota roster drawing the most scrutiny was first round pick Cordarrelle Paterson, who after just one year of major college football leaves a lot to be desired in the route-running department, but his dynamism in the return game is something that translates to the next level more easily. It was no surprise, then that Patterson delivered on special teams, taking his first punt return 44 yards for a score, but struggled as a receiver. He dropped the first ball thrown to him and finished the night with jus one catch for 10 yards despite playing the entire game. Second year man Jarius Wright made up for Patterson’s lack of production with 6 catches for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Although the Vikings did not begin camp with a quarterback controversy, Christian Ponder was out-played by his subordinates, KC reject Matt Cassel and undrafted rookie James Vandenberg. Ponder only went 2-for-8, while Cassel completed 16 of 23 attempts (69%) and threw both TD’s to Wright, and Vandenberg was 6 of 8.

Re: Flying High Again | Philadelphia Eagles

New Look, Same Suck

Kelly's Offense Can't Find End Zone, Niners Smash Eagles

One of the biggest questions over the last several months is how Chip Kelly’s offense would translate to the NFL. As of one exhibition contest, it hasn’t. Kelly made his highly-anticipated debut against former Pac-12 nemesis Jim Harbaugh and the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers. And no matter how much you say “It’s only preseason”, the game looked every bit like one between a Super Bowl team and one that went 4-12 last season. Nothing the Eagles offense did fazed a San Francisco defense that is both talented and deep and Philly could only muster a trio of Alex Henery filed goals, two of which came from more than 50 yards out. All three scoring drives were directed by Nick Foles. Things were no better on defense. After giving up 41 points, the Eagle’s defensive staff is still left wondering who fits best where in Bill Davis’ hybrid 3-4/4-3 Under scheme.

The Niners jumped out to an early 14-0 lead by converting a pair of Michael Vick turnovers into touchdowns- deja vu all over again for Iggles fans. The scoring opened with a 9 yard pass from Colin Kaepernick to Anquan Boldin on the first play after Dog-Killer coughed up a fumble on a sack. Vick then marched the Eagles to the red zone, but gave up a 97 yard pick-six to Carlos Rogers. As things turned out, that would have been enough to give Frisco the win if that had comprised all of its scoring. Foles completed 15 of 24 attempts, but couldn’t get the Eagles to pay dirt. Rookie Matt Barkley played all but the final series of the second half, and didn’t look any better than any other USC quarterbacks named Matt, going 5-for-15. That did very little to help the staff sort out the logjam at wide receiver. Second year man G.J. Kinne got to see the field for Philly’s last series, which ended with a turnover on downs and Kinne at 3-of-7 for 29 yards.

Re: Flying High Again | Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles Show Minor Improvement, But Don't Win

No one has taken over the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback competition, Chip Kelly’s offense needed until its seventh quarter of action to find the end zone, and the Eagles’ preseason record dropped to 0-2 with 23-17 loss to the visiting Green Bay Packers, but the team also shoe some incremental improvement in some areas. One of those not showing improvement was Michael Vick, who went 4-for-10 and failed to direct a scoring drive for the second time in as many games. Of the quarterbacks vying for the starting job, Vick has had the worst exhibition so far. When it comes to directing Kelly’s up-tempo offense, Vick just doesn’t seem to “get it” as yet. One complication for him could be his lack of stature- reading defenses has never been his forte, and at 6' he doesn’t seem to be seeing enough of the field to be able to make the quick decisions required by the Kelly system. That said, Nick Foles, who is half a foot taller, didn’t fare a lot better, completing only 7 of 17 throws and leading one scoring drive that reached the Green Bay 8 before Philly had to settle for a 25 yard Alex Henery field goal.

After one half of play, it looked like the Eagles were headed for another beat-down. When Nate Allen missed a tackle and rookie C.J. Johnson went 74 yards after the catch for an 81 yard score, the Pack was up 21-3. But in the second half, the Philly D, throwing multiple looks at the Pack, kept the Green Bay offense from putting any more points on the board, and Dennis Dixon and Matt Barkley outplayed Vick and Foles, each of them leading a touchdown drive. Green Bay’s only score came on Barkley’s first pass attempt, when Dezman Moses sacked him for a safety. Barkley shook that off and marched the Eagles to a 7 yard Chris Polk touchdown run that cut the Packer lead to 23-17, but he missed the chance to lead a game-winning drive when Green Bay was able to run out the clock in the game’s final possession.

Some baby steps were taken, but larger strides are needed with the regular season looming. Green Bay is not known a as stalwart defensive team, yet the Kelly scheme generated only 267 yards of total offense, due primarily to an unproductive rushing attack.
