CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts -- Entering Saturday's contest against an undefeated Boston College team, the Seminoles were looking to redshirt freshman Jameis Winston to lead the offense. Opposing the stingy Eagles run defense, it would be critical for Winston to have a solid game for the 'Noles, and sure enough, the redshirt freshman had the best game of his season.
The Eagles struck first on a long 48 yard run by bruising running back Andre Williams in the first quarter. Then, a long, methodical Florida State was then cut short deep inside Boston College territory by a Devonta Freeman. Following up Freeman's fumble, Winston threw his sixth interception of the season on the following possession.
However, from that point on, Winston was near flawless. Trailing 7-0, Winston led the Seminoles down the field before capping off a drive with a 3 yard run on a read option. Then, after FSU got the ball back with a minute and change remaining in the first half, Winston orchestrated a masterful drive down the field, which finished with a 4 yard touchdown pass to Christian Green.
Although the Eagles were having success with the screen pass out of the backfield to Williams, the Seminoles defense refused to break, keeping Boston College scoreless through the second and third quarters. With a 14-7 lead, the game was still a toss-up, but James Wilder Jr. padded FSU's advantage with a 2 yard touchdown run on the first drive of the third quarter.
Williams recorded his second touchdown of the game early in the 4th quarter with a 9 yard catch and run, cutting the deficit back to 7. Boston College had an opportunity to cut the game to 4 with a field goal attempt with just over 4 minutes remaining in the game. However, Eagles kicker Nate Freese hit the crossbar on his 52 yard attempt. On the very next play, Winston and the 'Noles made the Eagles pay, as Winston connected with Kenny Shaw on 67 yard pass, beating the BC blitz to seal Florida State's victory.
With the unbeaten record still in tact, the Seminoles bounced up to #5 in the polls following the surprising upsets of #1 Ohio State and #2 Georgia. However, the rest of the season isn't clear sailing for the Seminoles, as they are set on a collision course with #6 Clemson and #4 Florida.
Your stuff is so clean and awesome looking, loving this setup so far. I have always liked Florida State so hope to see you do well and keep going with this strong start, really looking forward to the games against Clemson, NC State, Miami, and Florida.
WEEK SIX PREVIEW: MARYLAND vs. FLORIDA STATE The Florida State Seminoles are fresh off their best performance of the season in a hard-fought, 31-14 victory over the Boston College Eagles. Jameis Winston was virtually unstoppable against BC and looks to carry that over into today's game against the nation's 15th best defense.
After finishing the 2012 season 4-8, Randy Edsall has the Terrapins back over .500, as they come into this game with a 3-1 record. The debacle that occurred at the quarterback position is no more, as CJ Brown has returned, fully healthy, and although he has been relatively disappointing through Maryland's first four games, his presence certainly adds stability to the Maryland offense. However, Brown's struggles have had a negative correlation to the lack of production of Stefon Diggs. Diggs, who came into this season regarded as one of the most electric players in college football, has caught only 18 passes for 235 yards and 1 touchdown.
Brown's 6 interceptions compared to his mere 5 touchdowns are certainly a telling sign. With Brown's errant passing thus far, expect the Seminoles to put as many rushers in Brown's face as they can, in hopes to force poor decisions and inaccurate throws.
Florida State's defense has been steadily improving through their first four games. After struggling early on, particularly against Pitt in the season opener, the Seminoles have bounced back, and boast the nation's 35th best defense, as well as the nation's best run defense. Although the pass defense still leaves something to be desired, the 'Noles should still be able to get by an anemic Maryland passing attack.
Offensively, Florida State have also been improving. Winston was nearly flawless in Florida State's win over Boston College, as the redshirt freshman tossed for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns, while completing 75% of his passes. The Terps concede just 170 yards through the air per game, a number good for 23rd in the country, but when Winston and the rest of the offense is clicking as it was last week, the Seminoles are seemingly impossible to stop.
