Broncos’ ground game awakens
in 31-10 victory over Buffalo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Was that a running game we actually saw from Western Michigan on Saturday?

Indeed, it was.

Coach B-Dawg used a custom playbook for the first time after struggling to run the ball in the first six games of this dynasty. The playbook was heavy on power running plays, with a lead fullback and at least one tight end.

The result was the first 100-yard rushing performance of this dynasty, as Dareyon Chance ran 25 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a surprisingly easy 31-10 victory over Buffalo.

As a team, the Broncos ran 45 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns. That’s not an awesome rushing average (3.49 yards), but includes three sacks.

It’s a huge improvement over Western’s dismal rushing in its first six games. The Broncos averaged only 46 rushing yards and 1.97 yards per carry during a 2-4 start. The most rushing yards by any back was 57.

“If we can run the ball, our passing game becomes better and we can dictate the terms of engagement better,” B-Dawg said. “I prefer to control the pace of play with the run game. I’m much more comfortable with the running plays I put in our custom playbook.”

Back-up running back Brian Fields chipped in with a respectable 58 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.

B-Dawg was also more at ease with the passing plays in his book, which helped Tyler Van Tubbergen complete his first eight passes while finishing 17-for-23 for 208 yards a touchdown and a pick.

It was anybody’s game, as Western (3-4) took a 17-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

After a punt was downed at the 3-yard line, the Broncos marched 97 yards in 15 plays, taking 4:52 off the clock, to take a 24-10 lead on a 1-yard run by Chance with 4:39 remaining in the game. Fields tacked on a final score with a 5-yard run with 48 seconds remaining.

The Broncos did not allow a play from scrimmage longer than 18 yards. Buffalo is 3-3.

3-star QB is B-Dawg’s first recruit

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — B-Dawg’s first recruit as coach at Western Michigan is a potential quarterback of the future, but more like the distant future.

Mike Doyle of Rochester, Mich. has the potential to eventually start for the Broncos, but at 66 OVR the three-star signal caller is likely to be red-shirted next season before holding a clip board for at least another year or two beyond that.

Still, B-Dawg sees some promise.

“He has 80 SPD, which might make him suitable in certain situations,” B-Dawg said. “I’m just glad to finally have someone in the fold. I was getting worried after going half a season without a commitment.”

Doyle is the 31st-ranked quarterback in the nation. His scouting ratings are 79 THP and 72 THA.

The Broncos are still targeting a better passing prospect, 69 OVR Frank Matthews of Girard, Ohio. Matthews scouts out at 69 OVR with 84 THP, 77 THA and 58 SPD.
