Game Notes
In their last meeting, the New England Patriots cruised to an easy 31-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins had some success moving the ball, converting 53% of their third down attempts. The Patriots were even better, converting 68% of their third down attempts. Along with that, the Dolphins had no answers for the Patriots' passing and rushing attack. For the Dolphins to win, they'll need to stop the Patriots ground game and hope they're fortunate enough to get some turnovers. That's a tall task considering the Dolphins have forced only 5 turnovers this season.

There's always an interesting question that comes up after a close game like this one. From looking at the the final score, it looks like this was a closely contested game. When looking deeper into the stats, some things just don't add up. One of them is the large difference in time of possession. The advantage there goes to the New England Patriots. When looking at the turnovers however, you'll see that the Miami Dolphins had the advantage there. With turnovers having such a huge impact on a game, the question here is did the Patriots win the game or did the Dolphins lose it?
Tom Brady threw three interceptions in the game, including this one to Jamar Taylor of the Miami Dolphins.
Like they have been all season, the Patriots offense was great. They went on long, time consuming drives that took a lot of time off the clock and resulted in points. When the team found itself in a third down situation, they converted many of them. However, this didn't happen consistently enough throughout the game. That combined with the turnovers meant that the Dolphins never fell too far behind in the game.
When the New England Patriots were clicking on offense, it resulted in plays like Josh Boyce's 62 yard cath and run as well as Kenbrell Thompkins; 12 yard touchdown reception.
Even though the Patriots gift-wrapped opportunities for the Dolphins in the form of turnovers, they weren't able to take advantage of them. While the Patriots' defense did do a good job of getting off the field on third downs, the Dolphins did little to help themselves. With the Dolphins converting only 30% of their third downs, their offense never really had time to get in rhythm. The Dolphins were more successful when they didn't find themselves in third down situations.
The Miami Dolphins found some success on offense early in the game like this 20 yard run by Daniel Thomas and an 8 receiving touchdown by Charles Clay.
Even after all of that, the Dolphins still had a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter. A drive by the Patriots stalled, giving the Dolphins plenty of time to tie the game. Trailing the Patriots 13-20, the Dolphins started a drive that could have forced overtime. When faced with a fourth down and without quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the Dolphins ran a play. Mike Wallace beat Aqib Talib and was running into the endzone when Matt Moore threw the ball. Instead of celebrating possibly tying the game, a wide open Wallace dropped the pass that fell perfectly into his hands. Dropping open passes had plagued the Dolphins all game long, and it happened again at the most inopportune time.
While the Patriots didn't "escape" with the win, they certainly are lucky to have won the game. If a few things had gone differently, the Dolphins could have been the winners on Sunday. The Patriots may not have the same luxury of making those mistakes and coming away with a win when they face the Kansas City Chiefs next week. That game could be the biggest of the season for the Patriots.
Game Ball/Extra Reps
Game Ball Wide Receivers: The wide receivers, specifically rookie Ivan Cross, continue to make big plays. Unfortunately, Cross, who was filling in for an injured Kenbrell Thompkins, suffers an injury of his own and will miss the next few games.
Stevan Ridley: Despite a difficult start, Ridley finishes strong with 91 rushing yards.
Run Defense: The Patriots front seven holds the Dolphins to rushing offense to 56 yards.
Extra Reps Tom Brady: Brady keeps the Dolphins in the game by throwing three interceptions.
Ryan Allen: Allen fails to pin the Dolphins deep in their own territory as two of his punts bounce into the endzone.
Media Reaction Lavar Arrington - @LArringtonEA: Home sweet home for New England -- they get the win. Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: #Patriots have to love watching Tom Brady play like he did today. Peter Schrager - NFL Insider: At the midway point your team's in a good spot. How far do you think this team can go? Robert Kraft: You just want to be in a position to win a Super Bowl, and of course for that to happen you need to make the playoffs, and I know we can get there.

Mike Hill - @MikeHillEA: Mike McCarthy said that his guys won;t have to practice tomorrow, they earned the day off. Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: Nothing better than a win at home. Panthebrs will rest easy tonight. Skip Bayless - @SkipBayless: Best way to win over your fan base: win at home. #Chiefs didn't get that memo. Part IV of V: Playoffs? Don't Talk About -- Playoffs?!
Several weeks of running into people as fast as you can has to take a toll on the human body, but somehow, these players manage to get up for those 17 weeks and play as hard as they can. Whatever aches and pains they have will just have to wait for the offseason to be taken care of. Right now, the playoff race is heating up and this isn't the time to start taking it easy. For the teams that have a less likely chance of making the playoffs, there's still pride to play for. With the last four teams taking their byes this week, it's all or nothing from here on out.
After finishing the 2013 season with a 10-6 record, this can't be the way the indianapolis Colts envisioned their 2014 season would play out. For the Atlanta Falcons, their 9-7 record last year had them just on the outside of a playoff berth. Circumstances have changed for both teams and their upcoming game on Sunday is critical to their playoff and division standings, more so for he Colts than the Falcons. With most of their team healthy now, the Falcons will be tougher than ever to defeat.
With their first six out of eight home games at home, the Philadelphia Eagles and rookie quarterback Billy Perez have made the most of it. Now, Perez and the Eagles will be tested on the road with six of their next eight away from Lincoln Financial Field, starting with the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. With the 2nd ranked offense and the 3rd ranked defense to aid them, the Eagles certainly won't be a pushover. The Seahawks and the 12th Man might have something completely different to say about it though. Their only loss of the season was at the hands of their division rival, the San Francisco 49ers. Now that they're in the middle of a three game homestand, that 12th Man may be more rambunctious than ever, especially with the playoffs on the hrizon.
