Reid 0-1 after first foray in NCAA football action as North Texas prevails
James Baker hauls it in from 8 yards out; Davis is brought down for one of four sacks on the day
DENTON, Tx. – Lose the turnover battle, and you lose the game 70% of the time. The percentage is higher when the turnover battle is lost by more than one turnover, and Vandals QB Taylor Davis threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, in a 13-24 loss.
The defense played better than expected, holding North Texas to just 238 yards of total offense and 103 yards on the ground.
“Any honest analysis indicates that giving up just over 100 yards on the ground was a coup in this game,” said head coach Rusty Reid afterward. “I’m proud of the way we hung in there. I’m not going to pretend there are no moral victories for this team. Sometimes we’ll have to be happy with a moral victory, for now. We know the situation we’re in. These kids fought hard today. But sometimes you have to become respectable as a football team before the wins start piling up. Hopefully today was a step in that direction.”
The teams traded punts in the early going before North Texas took the lead with a field goal midway through the first quarter. On the next possession, after a pair of first downs, a wide receiver screen was called. As the blocker engaged the corner, Davis threw the ball. Only one problem: the blocker pushed the cornerback right into the path of the ball. See ya, 10-0 North Texas.
Two drives later Idaho was forced to settle for a field goal after a nice drive. North Texas punted, but then forced another, more egregious interception and then trucked it down the field for a touchdown that almost put the game out of reach at 17-3. Idaho responded with a great drive, completing two long passes and scoring on an 8-yard run by James Baker to get themselves back in the hunt by halftime.
Kicking the ball off to start the second half, the defense held, as no points were scored by either team in the frame. Idaho was then forced to kick a field goal from the 1-yard line when North Texas made a nice goal-line stand. North Texas had one more drive in them and it finished off the game.

Twister and Fosh Report
My friend Twister (Old Dominion) got slapped around by ECU 48-21, but made a few big plays and got some good coaching points going his way. Apparently ECU has a ridiculous fullback / halfback in our dynasty named Jimmy Booth, who incidentally is the wrong race, position, and has 92 speed. He kept running over the Old Dominion squad one by one in this one.
Jfosh (OOH LA LA) had a tight one against Arkansas that came right down to the final minute when Arkansas connected on a hail mary down to the 1-yard line, then punched it in from a yard out with :22 remaining to win 37-33. The teams racked up nearly 1,200 total yards in this game.
Both teams come into this game after taking a physical beating from better teams. Wyoming had to face Nebraska on the road, losing 17-41. Wyoming likes to run a spread offense and pass the ball at will, but Nebraska wasn't having it. They will try to establish the passing game early and often against Idaho. It will be key for us to try and keep turnovers to a minimum, since pass-happy offenses live and die by the turnover sword. We need to give them the opportunity to die.
It was a day of broken tackles and Wyoming running down the sideline for six
LARAMIE, Wy. – The most telling stat of the day in an embarrassing performance where the team was simply outmuscled: 42 to 1. That, friends, was the unofficial pancake count for the two teams. Idaho did its best to slow down an offense that surprised them with constant use of the read option. Wyoming had a spread passing reputation coming in, but ran the ball primarily in their first game to open the season, and did it again in this one.
Early in the game it was apparent that any linebacker who had hands put on him was going straight to the turf. Subs were made, the line was pinched, blitzers were sent, but in the end it just didn't matter as the Vandal butts kept hitting the turf over and over again.
Down 10-7 with 5 seconds left in the first quarter following an easy long touchdown run on an option keeper by HB Brandon Miller from a Wildcat set, Idaho fumbled the following kickoff and it was recovered by Wyoming before the quarter ended. The next play was an option keeper by quarterback Brett Smith who went unfettered amidst the strewn Idaho bodies for a 21-yard touchdown run.
On the occasions where the entire team wasn't falling on the ground, the defense was decent. The passing lanes seemed to be filled for the most part and the tackling wasn't horrible except when Wyoming was in beast mode. The bad sequences continued as Wyoming scored on a 58-yard pitch and catch and tackle break and tackle break and long run down the sideline to take a nice lead heading into the second half stretch run. Wyoming kept answering in their own little way, but were simply never able to stem the tide.

The Bro Report
Twister and Old Dominion shocked the football universe by prevailing in College Park, MD by the score of 37-31 against the Terps. Down 31-20 with three minutes to go in the third quarter, Old Dominion rolled off 17 consecutive points to end the game in a very clutch display.
jfosh and UL Lafayette gave it the old college try against Kansas State, but in a similar outcome as week 1 they were unable to pull off the upset as they fell by the wayside, 38-35. Kansas State led 21-0 after one quarter in a game that threatened to snowball on OooLala, but the Ragin' Cajuns responded with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and trailed 28-14 at halftime. Then they tallied three additional scores in the second half but it just wasn't enough, as a field goal with 7:58 remaining in the fourth quarter held up for KSU prior to a pair of 4th quarter scores by OooLALA.
Well I would have to say your dynasty so far has started off as the most realistic to real life as I have seen. Idaho is just horrible.. I just started up a Coaching career dynasty as the OC at Eastern Washington moving them to the MCW with Idaho, and I think I had the ball pretty much the entire first half. Every Vandal series was a 3 and out punt.
79 OVR/83 OFF/78 DEF Northern Illinois at 63 OVR/67 OFF/61 DEF Idaho. Tale of two teams that have turned the ball over. Idaho has been disappointing even for Idaho, but NIU's start was just disastrous, losing 13-38 against Iowa in a game where people thought they would at least be competitive. They started the season ranked and fell out of the Top 25 afterwards. This is Coach Reid's first appearance at home. If the Vandals could somehow pull this one out it would be huge as they play rival WSU the next week, and Temple after that.
