Browns Rally in 4th to Beat Bills

Cleveland, Ohio---With a little more than a minute to go in the third quarter, Brown's quarterback Brian Hoyer knew it was go time. Down 27-20 Hoyer led a 14 play, 62 yard drive that ate up five and a half minutes off of the clock. The problem was that it stalled at the Buffalo 8. With only 6:50 left in the game, coach Rod Chudzinski elected to go for the fieldgoal instead of trying to convert a 4th and 6. A risky move that worked out in the end. On a 3rd and 2 at the Buffalo 49 with 4:30 left in the game, C.J. Spiller, who thrashed the Brown's defense all game, was stuffed for a four yard loss and Buffalo had to punt. Starting at their own 20, Hoyer and the Brown's offense started their drive. Facing a 3rd and 2 at their own 28, Hoyer found an opening and scrambled right for 16 yards. Two plays later, he hooked up with receiver Josh Gordon for a 13 yard gain. He then found receiver Greg Little open for 18 yards before finding tight end Jordan Cameron for 15 yards. Two plays later, Willis McGahee scored on a two yard run to put the Browns ahead by 3 with 42 seconds left. Hoyer would end up 4/6 for 53 yards on the final drive.

Josh Gordon evades defenders.

The game started out like an offensive shootout. On the second play of the game, Bills runningback C.J. Spiller gashed the Browns for a 66 yard run before finding the endzone on the next play. On the second play of the Brown's first drive, Hoyer and Co. would answer. Josh Gordon turned a simple curl route into a 73 yard touchdown pass after the cornerback whiffed on the tackle and left him wide open the rest of the way. Gordon would finish with 146 yards and a touchdown. On the Bills next drive, Manuel would answer back. On a 3rd and 9 from the Buffalo 42, Manuel had too much time in the pocket and found receiver Marquise Goodman alone for a 58 yard touchdown. After scoring ten more points in the second quarter, things went south for the Bills. C.J. Spiller had to leave the game in the 3rd quarter after being injured, and Fred Jackson was bottled up. Spiller would come back in in the fourth after the game got close again, but failed to generate anything. The Bills still had a shot at it though. Facing 4th and 5 at their own 25, Manuel tried to scramble through to the first but was tackled with two yards to go. Ten more days the Bills will have to wait to try to get their first win, while the Browns move to one game out of .500.

Brown’s D Dominant in Win

Cleveland, Ohio---The Brown’s defense turned in their most dominant performance this season Sunday against the Detroit Lions. With constant pressure upon him, Matt Stafford looked confused and out of his game throwing two interceptions, with cornerback Buster Skrine returning one for a touchdown late in the fourth. The Browns also sacked Stafford four times and stopped Bush dead cold in the endzone for a safety. That was after cornerback Christopher Owens stripped receiver Ryan Broyles of the ball after an 18 yard reception on the previous drive to set up a Billy Cundiff fieldgoal. Owens would record an interception as well. Calvin Johnson, who arguably is the most dominant receiver in the NFL, was even held to 12 yards on only two receptions.
*
Coach Chudzinski-“Very proud of this team today. All three sides of the ball played great and I am sure they will enjoy their first Monday off this year.”

Ryan Broyles is stripped of the football. Mingo recovers.

The offense, compared to the Lions, was very productive. Brian Hoyer was efficient, completing 66% of his passes for over 200 yards. He connected with his favorite target Josh Gordon for a 72 yard completion in the 3rd quarter for his only touchdown pass of the day. The Lions looked like they had the momentum for a brief period at the end of the first half, when Stafford threw an 18 yard touchdown pass to tight end Kris Durham to take the lead with 52 seconds to go. Kick returner Travis Benjamin would end that quickly, returning the kickoff 103 yards for the score.

Matt Stafford throws his only touchdown of the day.

Corner Christopher Owens picks off a pass.

Josh Gordon hauls in a long touchdown reception.
