Re: Poke It Real Good: A Wyoming Cowboys Dynasty (NCAA '14)

2013 Wyoming Cowboys Season Preview

The WYOMING COWBOYS enter the 2013 season amid the whirling winds of change.

New Coach CRAIG BOHL takes over for the newly and abruptly deposed Coach DAVE CHRISTENSEN. Well, maybe it wasn't that big of a surprise because the Pokes did only manage to win 4 games on their 2012 slate.

The 2012 season was very challenging, with bad losses to Toledo, Cal Poly, and Nevada. There was also a loss to Texas at DKR Memorial Stadium and blowout losses to strong Fresno State and Boise State MWC teams. Plus a narrow 1-point loss to regional rival Air Force.

None of the 4 wins were very convincing either, with wins over Idaho, UNLV, and New Mexico all coming by 5 points or less. The highlight of the season was the 45-31 BORDER WAR victory over Colorado State at home. But, even this marquee, rivalry matchup only drew a disappointing 2/3 capacity crowd at WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM in Laramie.

Enter Coach Bohl and his Championship pedigree from FCS powerhouse North Dakota State University. In fact, Bohl's NDSU squad would likely have beat Christensen's Wyoming squad if they had met in 2012. Coach Bohl also has Championship pedigree from his days as an assistant coach under Tom Osborne and Frank Solich at his alma mater, Nebraska. The Wyoming AD feels like he made a coup with the Bohl hiring and expectations in Laramie, WY are cautiously optimistic as Coach Bohl leads WYO into its 15th season in the Mountain West Conference, and his 1st season in MWC Conference play.

SEASON PREDICTION
: 6-6, barely Bowl Eligible, but not selected due to low prestige

Projected Losses at Nebraska, at Air Force, at San Jose State, vs Fresno State, at Boise State, at Utah State

Winnable Games vs Idaho, vs FCS, at Texas State, vs New Mexico, vs Colorado State, vs Hawai'i

PLAYERS TO WATCH: JR QB Brett Smith, SR WR Robert Herron, RS FR OLB Lucas Wacha

Cowpokes QB Brett Smith

After being passed over for MWC preseason All Conference honors in favor of Derek Carr and Joe Southwick, and with other talented MWC QBs in Cody Fajardo, Chuckie Keeton and David Fales, Cowpokes QB BRETT SMITH is a relatively unknown entity. However, the talented dual threat junior will look to make a name for himself this year.

Cowpokes WR Robert Herron

The only Cowboy to receive preseason All Conference honors, WR ROBERT HERRON was recognized as 2nd Team All MWC. Senior WR Herron will look to be Smith's main target and could put up gaudy numbers, especially if Wyoming is playing from behind often. Herron is projected to go anywhere from the 3rd to 6th rounds in the NFL draft.

Cowpokes OLB Lucas Wacha

Due to the relatively no-named Wyoming defense, there are no real standouts. However, with a fleet-of-foot back 7, this unit should be well equipped to play an MWC style of open football. Foremost among WYO defenders is RS Freshman LB LUCAS WACHA, who is surely better known as the little brother of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha. A bit undersized, even for MWC outside 'backers at 6'1" 214, Wacha is amongst the fastest Cowpokes on the team. With a couple of years of experience and some more time in the weight room, Wacha could be a fringy NFL prospect for the right team 4 years from now.

Re: Poke It Real Good: A Wyoming Cowboys Dynasty (NCAA '14)

This is looking pretty good! ill be following. Not too many Wyoming dynasties I've ever seen so this will be unique. Not a great recruiting state, and like you said in the preview, they've been just pretty awful. Following!
