LIONS BEAT RAVENS 26-16 - DETROIT CONTROL OWN PLAYOFF DESTINY

SAFETY DELMAS' TWO PICKS PIVOTAL IN DETROIT'S WIN

DETROIT, MI -- The Detroit Lions took a big step forward in the NFC playoff chase with a 26-16 win over the defending Super Bowl Champions Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. However, the victory came at a cost, as the Lions lost wide receiver Calvin Johnson to a back injury early in the game, as well as quarterback Matthew Stafford to a shoulder injury, which also took him out of the game.

Both players will undergo tests Tuesday morning. In the case of Stafford, Detroit are treading lightly as the quarterback has a history of shoulder issues; issues that plagued the end of his rookie season and his 2010 season. As for Megatron, the Lions believe it's not looking good. Jim Schwartz even stated to ESPN after the game that "it's looking like we won't see Calvin again this season."

The Lions' defense bailed out Detroit's offense on numerous occasions. Joe Flacco's three interceptions ultimately won Detroit the game, after the Lions themselves turned the ball over 4 times.

Detroit's running game was once again poor, with Joique Bell being the stand-out runner. The receivers performed admirably in the absence of Johnson, as Brandon Pettigrew and Ryan Broyles led the way with 5 and 4 receptions each. However, Calvin still led the way in receiving yards, as he racked up 68 yards on 2 receptions.

The Ravens' defense held firm for most of the game, whilst their offense was also stout and strong. However, Joe Flacco cost them the game. His three picks could all have been avoided. Flacco doesn't look like the quarterback that earned a massive contract extension in the offseason, and it's his performances that are holding this team down.

In the penultimate week of the 2013 NFL Season, the Lions host the New York Giants, where a win could all but secure a playoff berth. The Ravens welcome Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to Baltimore.
