Game Notes
IU opens up Big Ten play at home against Nebraska. The Huskers have won two straight after losing their season opener to Ole Miss, with a comeback win over Michigan last week in their home opener. This might just be a preview of the conference championship this season. Should be a good one.
Keys to victory
Indiana- Take care of the ball. 3 picks in the last game won't fly against a team like Nebraska, whose offense will make you pay for mistakes. Manning has to forget about last game, and remember what color jerseys his receivers are wearing.
Nebraska- Throw the ball. IU has a strong defense, but they are especially good at stopping the run. If Nebraska can make some big plays through the air, they could be tough to stop.
Prediction- Indiana 28, Nebraska 24. The Hoosiers have a tough game on their hands here, but should be able to use their defense to defend The Rock.

Hoosiers top Huskers in Big Ten opener

Bloomington- Indiana began their Big Ten portion of the 2018 season with what many have called a potential conference championship preview against Nebraska.

Indiana’s defense began the game firing on all cylinders, forcing the Huskers to punt the ball away. Indiana would use their possession to march downfield, capping the drive with a 26 yard touchdown from Nate Cross.

Nebraska would eventually get their offense going, and were able to put a field goal on the board for their first points of the afternoon. But again, the Hoosiers answered, as Jon Manning found Tony West, who was able to fight his way into the endzone to put IU up 14-3. Nebraska was quick to answer when Rory Hall caught a pass from QB Trey Rodriguez and used his blockers to find the endzone. With a minute and a half to go in the half, the Hoosiers were able to get downfield into Lewis Richardson’s field goal range, putting 3 more points up for Indiana to end the half with a 17-10 halftime lead.

Michael Keenan would open the scoring in the third quarter, as he found his way in from the goal line to put IU up by a pair of touchdowns. But, again, the Huskers had a response, carving their way through the Hoosier D to draw back within 7.

In the fourth quarter, Sam Pitts and Jon Manning combined for the play of the game. Facing third and goal, Manning rolled to his right off of play-action. With the Nebraska defense closing in, Pitts was able to get enough daylight to haul in Manning’s pass for the touchdown, adding to the Hoosier lead. But Nebraska had one more round in the chamber, as Rodriguez found Joe Daniels for an over-the-shoulder catch in the endzone to close the gap. Nebraska’s defense couldn’t get the stop they needed on the ensuing IU possession, and the Hoosiers ran out the clock for a 31-24 win.

“We knew coming in we’d have to be on top of our game,” said coach Pate. “Nebraska is the kind of team we’ve struggled with in the past, so it was good to be able to come out and play as well as we did.”

Indiana’s Jon Manning, a week after throwing 3 interceptions, recovered in dominant fashion, with 275 passing yards on 23 completions, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Manning’s performance was not the only highlight of the passing game, as tight end Marcus Koch caught 5 passes for 93 yards.

The defending West Division champs were led by Trey Rodriguez, who used the option game to pick up 108 yards on the ground. Rodriguez also went 11 of 14 passing for 162 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Indiana will have a bye week this week before heading off to their first road game of the season against the Wisconsin Badgers. Kickoff in Madison under the lights at 8:00 PM.

Re: Never Daunted: An Indiana Hoosiers Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Williams signs with Bengals

Cincinnati, OH- Former Hoosier receiver Taj Williams has signed with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals, according to his agent. Williams, who graduated this past spring, was the Hoosiers' top receiver a season ago. Williams capped his Indiana career in the National Championship game with 6 catches for 57 yards and a touchdown, helping the Hoosiers defeat Texas Christian for their first national title. Williams graduated from IU in May with a degree in psychology.

After going undrafted in April's NFL Draft, Williams received interest from several teams looking to sign him as an undrafted free agent. Reports say that in addition to the Bengals, Williams also received varying degrees of interest from Pittsburgh, Arizona, Washington, and Tennessee. Williams also received interest from several Arena Football League teams.

Williams becomes the fourth player from last year's team to go pro. Williams joins Danny Friend and Daryl Chestnut in the NFL, while Laray Smith is playing professionally in Canada.

Game Notes
Indiana's first road test of the year comes in Madison against Wisconsin. The Hoosiers won 21-14 here a season ago. Wisconsin hasn't had a good start to their conference schedule, going 0-2, but hasn't lost a home this season. One of those things will change after this one.
Keys to victory
Indiana- Command the game via the defense. Indiana's defense is off to a great start, which will have to continue if they want success in the Big Ten, especially on the road.
Wisconsin- Force turnovers. Indiana's aforementioned defense matches up will with Wisconsin, so the Badgers will have to use their defense to create offense.
Prediction- Indiana 30, Wisconsin 21. Two of Wisconsin's three wins came against sub-par opponents, though they were able to handle BYU easily at home in week two. Wisconsin's lack of consistency will be their downfall.
