We're baaaaack...

After a long offseason, the Hoosiers will look to defend their national championship. Despite winning it all, Indiana still has some unfinished business. The hunt for ring number 2 begins soon.

Friend, Chestnut selected in NFL Draft

New York- Two former Hoosiers heard their names called in the 2018 NFL Draft. Tight end Danny Friend was selected in the 5th round by the Minnesota Vikings, while Heisman-runner-up Daryl Chestnut went in the 6th round to the New York Giants.

The selections represent a changing of the guard at Indiana, who will now have to replace their top running back and tight end. Indiana also loses its second string running back, Laray Smith, and the team's number one wide receiver, Taj Williams. Neither Smith nor Williams were taken in the draft, but have garnered interest from several teams in the offseason.

Really interested to see what you do without Chestnut, obviously he was the focal point of the offense. With the backup gone too, it makes it even more intriguing.

You and me both. Offense is gonna look completely different this year. Hopefully our new starters can fill the void. Next man up.

Mallory out, Chryst in at defensive coordinator

Bloomington- Doug Mallory, Indiana's defensive coordinator since 2011, has left the school to take the head coaching position at Pittsburgh.

"We're sad to see him go, of course," said IU's coach Pate, "but we're all excited for him. He deserves this opportunity, and we wish him the best of luck at Pitt."

This is Mallory's first head coaching job, though coaching is in his blood. Mallory's father, Bill, coached the Hoosiers for 13 seasons from 1984 to 1996, amassing a record of 69-77-3, and leading IU to six bowl games.

After losing their defensive coordinator to the ACC, Indiana went to the same conference for a replacement. Indiana hired Paul Chryst, formerly the defensive coordinator at Louisville, to the same position.

"We're happy to have him," said Pate. "He's got a lot of experience under his belt, and coming from a tough conference like the ACC, he knows what kind of competition to expect here. We think he's a great fit with our program."

Hoosiers' recruiting class ranked 32nd

Bloomington- Indiana's newest class of recruits has been ranked the 32nd best class in the nation.

Indiana faces the challenge of replacing several key players from last year's national champion team, including halfbacks Daryl Chestnut and Laray Smith.

"Whenever you lose as many guys as we did, it creates a bit of a tough situation," said IU's coach Pate. "But I think we have a good batch of kids coming in. Guys that know what this program's about and what we want to do here, and what'll they'll have to do to make it happen.

"We actually over-recruited a bit, so unfortunately, some guys will have to get cut. I hate it for those kids, but from a team perspective, it's encouraging that so many quality players want to come here."

Those players who do survive the round of cuts will have their work cut out for them. Even though the class is highly rated, there are 5 other Big Ten teams with higher rated classes.

"We play in one of the most competitive divisions in one of the most competitive conferences in the country," Pate said. "We're building something here at Indiana, and us staying competitive in conference play is a big part of that."
