Re: Baltimore Ravens: A New Era
Hey Diddle Diddle The AFC Championship is upon us. The Colts drove down the field on their first possession but Quarterback Brandon Weeden found Brandan Perry for an interception on the third play. The Ravens could not capitalize however and Mason Crosby missed a field goal. Later in the quarter, Dre Kirkpatrick picked off a pass intended for Dwayne Bowe near the sidelines. Ray Rice had a nice 20 yard run where he pulled out the spin move to get the Ravens inside the 10. But they were forced to kick another field goal. The Ravens got the ball back again early in the second quarter. Shane Vereen was an effective target early on but on a screen play, he was hammered as he caught the ball. In addition to losing 7 yards, he also got injured. After the game, it was determined that he would miss the remainder of the game. The Ravens drove down the field and Ray Rice punched it in from 12 yards out. Brandon Weeden threw another pick, Brandan Perry on the receiving end for the second time. This set the Ravens up in plus territory. On 2nd and 10, Flacco noticed Torrey Smith was on one on one coverage and he took a shot to the end zone and Torrey made the leaping catch, his signature play. The Colts would respond with a drive by Brandon Weeden who found Santonio Holmes on a nice pass to set up a Beau Kirkland field goal as time expired at the end of the first half. The Ravens found themselves up 17-3. The second half was more of the same. The Ravens continued to pound the ball with Ray Rice and Jordin Bledsoe. The first drive of the third quarter the Ravens took a slow methodical drive down the field and Rice punched it in from one yard. The Colts offense couldn’t do anything in the second half. The Ravens secondary was shut down. The coverage was extremely tight and when Weeden would see some space. A Raven would quickly swarm to the receiver to force a tough catch. Weeden’s receivers didn’t help the cause. Dwayne Bowe, Santonio Holmes and Vernon Davis were targeted a lot but couldn’t hang on to the passes in traffic. In the second half, the Ravens would add one more 54 yard field goal by Mason Crosby and the game was over. 27-3 and the Ravens would head to Super Bowl 52.
*There was a problem with the color scheme. I hope the issue doesn't persist. |

Re: Baltimore Ravens: A New Era
Pre-Super Bowl News Ravens Ink Lynch to deal Marshawn Lynch as a member of the Seahawks Shane Vereen went down in the AFC championship game. The Ravens found a replacement. Marshawn Lynch hasn't played since the 2016 season but he is still in good shape according to Head Coach John Harbaugh. Offensive Coordinator Jim Harbaugh had this to say, "He should see a decent amount of carries in the Super Bowl. We have a plan for him." Lynch has had an odd career. His career began as a promising running back for the Buffalo Bills bu he was then traded to the Seattle Seahawks. After the 2011 season, Lynch became a free agent and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2012, Lynch rushed for 1135 yards and 5 touchdowns. This did not translate to a pro bowl. However the next year, his numbers rose to 1623 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. This would be his best year in the NFL and he would make the All-NFL first team. The next two years, Lynch had a combined 2065 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Bucs. After the 2015 season, Lynch fell out of favor with the coaching staff of the Bucs. He only got 24 carries in the 2016 season and was released after the season ended. Lynch went to training camp with the New England Patriots but was cut in preseason. Lynch has been working out a lot and said, "I'm only here so I don't get fined," on Media Day. Hopefully, Lynch provides a spark the Ravens will need in the Super Bowl. |

Re: Baltimore Ravens: A New Era
Super Bowl LII Media Day Torrey Smith, Hometown Hero Torrey Smith had a tough childhood to say the least. His mother was 15 years old when Torrey was born. But he would have 5 younger siblings to take care of. Torrey's mother used to work 2 jobs and attend community college to keep her young family afloat. But Torrey had to raise his family. As young as four years old, Torrey would provide his younger siblings with meals by dragging a chair over to the microwave and heating up their suppers. Torrey was athletic and physical education coach Steve Swope recognized this and payed for Torrey's sports. He grew up playing football, basketball and baseball. In high school, he was a standout football player and received attention from Penn State, Virginia and Maryland. Torrey chose to attend Maryland so he could take care of his mother. His mother would go to jail for a year during his Maryland career but she was allowed to attend Torrey's games and eventually his graduation. Torrey would leave Maryland after his junior year and enter the NFL so he could support his family. (This was a very short summary of Torrey's childhood. It's a great story, if you want to read more then follow this link http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...T2010122501502) Torrey Smith was drafted by the Ravens in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft. In his career he has made 4 pro bowl appearances. In his seven seasons in the NFL, he has 443 catches for 6862 yards and 41 touchdowns. Since his rookie season, he has become an instrumental part of the Ravens offense. He has been an amazing deep ball threat for Flacco. Flacco on Torrey, "It's like having a security blanket. If I see one-on-one coverage I can throw it to him and watch him make the play." Torrey Smith has fought through a lot in his life but he has an opportunity to add a second Super Bowl ring to his collection. |

Re: Baltimore Ravens: A New Era
Texas-Sized Game Super Bowl LII. The Ravens match-up against the high-powered Arizona Cardinals offense. The game is in Cowboys Stadium. The game started off slow. On the first drive of the game, fullback Poppy Mollete suffered a torn labrum. After that, the Ravens ran lots of single back sets but Marshawn Lynch who was signed just 13 days earlier became the fullback. The Ravens and Cardinals each exchanged 2 three and outs. The Cardinals punted the ball to the Ravens and the Ravens got a spark. Devin Hester took the punt back 33 yards to the Ravens 28 yard line. Hester was signed just three weeks earlier for kickoff and punt return duties. Then the Cardinals began to move the ball through the air. Ryan Lindley lead his team down the field. It was first and goal from the 4 yard line but the Cardinals couldn’t punch it in. The Cardinals hit Larry Fitzgerald but he was inches short of the goal line. They elected to kick a 17 yard field goal which was a questionable decision. On the next drive. Joe Flacco made a big play on 3rd & 10 and scrambled for a first down. Then, the Ravens got another spark. This time, Marshawn Lynch rushed for a 40 yard gain which included two nasty stiff arms. But the Ravens couldn’t capitalize on the run and would kick a field goal. The next Cardinals play from scrimmage, Ryan Lindley was sacked by Charles Johnson and fumbled and cornerback Latwan “Captain” Kirk dove on it. The next play, Marshawn Lynch scored a 4 yard touchdown run. The Ravens captured the momentum with a 20-6 lead. The Cardinals and Ravens would exchange punts and the Cardinals would get the ball with 10 seconds left in the first half. On the last play of the half, Lindley would throw a deep pass which was tipped by Ravens safety Roman Harper and caught by Cardinals receiver Andre Roberts at the 1 yard line. Luckily for the Ravens, time expired but could the Cardinals gained momentum from this? The Cardinals received the ball but punted. The Ravens began to drive down the field. The Ravens were in field goal range but it was 3rd and 15. Joe Flacco took off but was hit by Cardinals defensive end Lenex Richmond. The ball squirted loose and was recovered by Sam Acho who picked it up and took it to the house. 20-13. The next play, Flacco sensed a blitz so he sent Jorvante Haynes on an out route. But Kenan Carr obviously watched his film as he jumped the route and took it back 27 yards. The Ravens were stunned. In just two plays from scrimmage, The Cardinals tied the game. The Ravens began to drive off of runs by all three running backs. They had 4th and 5 from the 40 yard line and tried a fake field goal. The Cardinals batted down the attempted pass. Ryan Lindley took his team down the field with multiple third down passes and capped the drive off with a 10 yard pass to Brandon Myers on the last play of the third quarter. The Cardinals scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. The Ravens and Cardinals exchanged punts to start the fourth quarter. The Ravens began their drive from deep in their territory. Dennis Pitta had a big catch on third down when Flacco was blitzed but they were inches short. It was fourth and inches from their own 24 and John Harbaugh went for it. Marshawn Lynch the fullback plowed his way for a first down. Owen Daniels then had a big third down catch in plus territory which kept the drive alive. The Ravens were in field goal range but they needed a touchdown. The Cardinals blitzed on third down and Joe Flacco tried a check down pass to Ray Rice who was wide open but he didn’t turn around in time and the Ravens had to settle for a field goal. The Ravens had to trust their defense to get the ball back for them. The Cardinals got a first down on a pass to Greg Childs on the second play of their drive. It was third down after the two minute warning and Ryan Lindley connected with Kyle Jordan but he was shoved out of bounds. The Ravens stuffed Kennan Clements on first and second down. On third and 6, the Cardinals tried a toss and luckily Arron Bell was able to make the crucial open field tackle. The Ravens used their last timeout and the Cardinals were forced to punt. The Ravens got the ball left with 56 seconds. Could this be a clutch two minute drive? On first down Joe Flacco is under center his receivers aren’t open so he steps up and sees Owen Daniels on a post route. But Denard Haile came out of nowhere and picked the pass off. Haile was covering Jordy Nelson but tracked the pass and picked it off. The Cardinals would take a knee and the Arizona Cardinals could celebrate. The Lombardi Trophy is going to Arizona for the first time in franchise history. Your Super Bowl MVP? Kenan Bell who intercepted the Joe Flacco pass early in the third quarter to completely shift momentum.

Re: Baltimore Ravens: A New Era
Ravens Position By Position Outlook Part I: Skill Position Quarterback Under Contract: Joe Flacco, Andrew Medlock It's obvious that Joe Flacco will take a lot of heat from the Baltimore fans this year. His two turnovers brought the Cardinals back in the Super Bowl. A third sealed the Ravens fate. He has by far the highest cap hit on the Ravens. A $23.69 million dollar cap hit has Flacco as the highest paid player in the NFL. He's been a franchise quarterback for the Ravens for a decade. But here's a scenario. Backup Quarterback Andrew Medlock has been groomed to be the successor to Flacco. He has been a pleasant surprise. He can throw the deep ball as well as any quarterback in the NFL but his accuracy has something left to be desired. Medlock's rookie deal expires next year as well and the Ravens will have a tough dilemna between the two quarterbacks. The plan for this year is to stick to the two quarterbacks. There may be a 3rd player brought it in preseason but there is no reason to carry three quarterbacks on the roster. Running Back/Fullback Under Contract: Jordin Bledsoe, Shane Vereen, Poppy Mollete(FB) Expired Contracts: Ray Rice, Marshawn Lynch The Ravens have an interesting situation at running back. Ray Rice is 31 years old and is coming off of a pro bowl season. Rice reportedly wants to test free agency and make money in his final big contract. The Ravens have speedster Jordin Bledsoe who has been the #2 back to fill in. Bledsoe has breakaway speed and is very elusive. Shane Vereen was not the impact the Ravens hoped for when they signed him and he may be cut. Marshawn Lynch was the most impressive running back in the Super Bowl. Lynch had a lot of tough yardage and the Ravens were impressed. The fullback position is not a need as Poppy Mollete has been a solid fullback for the past few seasons. Wide Receivers Under Contract: Torrey Smith, Jordy Nelson, Ryan Broyles, Jorvante Haynes Expired Contracts: Asa Reese One of the Ravens biggest needs is at receiver. Torrey Smith is a 4 time pro bowler and one of the best receivers in the league but the Ravens have not had a true #2 receiver in a long time. Jordy Nelson failed to make an impact on the outside and is more suited for the slot. Even so, he didn't make a huge impact. Ryan Broyles has been a disappointment as well. He never was able to become a #2 receiver because of his mediocre route running and slow speed. Jorvante Haynes did not play much but his speed should give him an opportunity to play more. Haynes has developed a lot according to the coaching staff. Asa Reese is the lone expiring contract and he will likely not re-sign because his impact was minimal. Tight End Under Contract: Owen Daniels, Dennis Pitta Expiring Contacts: Cameron Wesley The Tight Ends were a bright spot in the offense. Daniels and Pitta were both very reliable. The team ran lots of twin tight end sets partially due to an ineffective #2 receiver. Daniels got hurt however but Pitta continued to perform. Pitta was the second leading receiver at the end of the year. Wesley had a catch in the superbowl and may receive an extension to be the #3 tight end. Wesley has soft hands. |
