Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
Mississippi State came into this game knowing they had to control the clock and Barry Sanders if they were to pull off the upset and for 3 and a half quarters they did. But all Sanders needed was a few touches to change the game. After Oklahoma State QB Mike Gundy fumbled on the first play of the game, MSU went right to work with the gameplan. After 5 straight runs, QB Bruce Threadgill, not known for his passing hit speedy RB Walter packer in the flat and he scooted 19 yards for a quick 7-0 lead. With the MSU defense keyng on Sanders they forced a punt. But both defenses came to play and neither team could move within scoring range the rest of the quarter. Several nice 10 yard runs by Sanders as well as a 15 yard pass from Gundy to All American Hart Lee ****s, with the help of a face mask penalty, put OSU with in FG range and the lead was cut to 7-3. MSU answered with a long 60 yard drive with field general Threadgill running and reading the defense with timely pitches on the option to set up a short FG. OSU came right back with Sanders runs of 15 and 18 yards before sputtering and Cary Blanchard missed a long FG attempt. With 1:33 left in the first half, Threadgill hit Steve White for 20 yards on a diving catch and then 49 yards to Walter Packer who had slipped behind the secondary to set up Threadgill's short TD run and a stunning 17-3 lead at the half. MSU recieved the second half KO and went to work chewing clock. With huge FB Dennis Johnson picking up chunks of yards, and Threadgill's timely scrambles, and a nice 3rd and 9 conversion on a 7 yard slant to Robert Chatman, MSU ate up half the clock in the quarter. Backup QB Norman Joseph scored on a short run after Threadgill was shaken up briefly and the score was an overwelming 24- 3 lead half way through the 3rd. But then All everything Barry Sanders came to life. He returned the ensuing KO 54 yards and after several runs had OSU in position for a 41 yard FG to cut the deficet to 24-6. MSU drove right back with Threadgill hitting Chatman for 44 yards but the OSU defense stopped the drive as MSU could not convert a 4th and 12 on a very questionable decision by the coach. OSU's Gundy came back hitting 2 passes, Sanders picked up 9, and then WR Jarrod Green threaded his way through the secondary for a 41 yard TD. Gundy hit Green again for the 2 point conversion and it was starting to look like a game. MSU wasnt done yet and Threadgill hit WR Gavin Rees for 24 yards, made a late option pitch to Packer who picked up 20 yards and K Kinney Jordan hit a 42 yard FG tp push the lead back to 27-14. With only 4:18 remaining Sanders took the following KO and after making several defenders miss, sped 101 yards for the TD and the lead was 27-21. MSU took over at their 27 needing to run some clock and gain a few first downs. But on first down Threadgill was thrown for a loss and shaken up for the second time. Backup Joseph was sacked on the next pla and facing a 3rd and 14, WR Chatman could only pick up 11 forcing a punt. Sanders returned the punt 15 yards giving them the ball at their own 49 with 3:20 remaining. QB Gundy hit WR ****s twice for 21 yards, Green for 12 yards, ****s for 14 yards on a third and 9, and with just over a minute left, Gundy punched it in to take a 28-27 lead. Threadgill came back in and MSU started from their own 28 with 1:02 remaining. OSU denied the pass and Threadgill was forced to scramble several times and as the clock wound down trying to get within FG range, he could find no open recievers and the clock ran out on his 10 yard run to the OSU 36 yard line.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
Not much to say about this one, Colorado State looked bad....Boise looked dominant. Boise came out and scored on the first posession of the game, going 80 yards in 13 plays with a mix of short passes and Ian Johnson runs. The rest of the quarter was a defensive struggle as neither team could get a drive going. CSU opened the second behind the running of Damon Washington and accurate throws from QB Moses Moreno to even the score at 7 on a short pass to big RB Kevi McDougal. But that was it for CSU. RB Washington with 50 yards in the quarter would only gain 16 more the rest of the game as Boise's defense harrassed Moreno, and Boise QB Jared Zabransky caught fire. Boise would score on every posession( 8 in all) the rest of the game and CSU would either be held to 3 and outs, or fumble , or be picked off. Boise looks to be a real headache in this tournament.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
UnC started fast behind its two-headed RB duo of Amos Lawrence and Kelvin Bryant. A 22 yard screen to Lawrence and an 18 power run by Bryant set up a short Lawrence run for an early lead. A&M tried to answer as QB Al Chester had the option game working to perfection until the tough Carolina defense toughened and stopped the Rattlers first drive on a fourth and 7 incompletion. RB Bryant led Carolina's second scoring drive as he did the bulk of the work before plowing in from the 5 to give UNC a 14-0 lead at the start of the second quarter. A&M would not quit and behind the running of Clarence Hawkins, Melvin McFayden, and a 40 yard sprint by Ike Williams, A&M got on the board as Hawkins dove in from 2 yards out. Both defenses rose to the occasion as the teams traded punts the rest of the half. After the Rattlers were held to a 3 and out to start the third, UNC tried to seperate itself as Amos Lawrence got hot and picked up bg chunks of yards to position the Heels in scoring range. QB Rod Elkins, who struggled with accuracy most of the day, found Victor Harrison for a 6 yard score and a 21-6 lead. A&M needed a score or this game might slip away, and QB Chester was not going to let that happen. Chester had runs of 10,9, and 6 yards and backup FB Mike Thomas bulled for 35, before Ike Williams danced for 12 yards and the score. The TD was costly though as Chester took a big hit on the pitch and would not return. Several posessions later, backup QB Sammy Knight directed the offense 60 yards to set up a 39 yard FG, and the Tar Heel faithful were starting to get antsy. UNC's Elkin started off the next drive with a twisting, weaving 42 yard run but clipping nullified it and the drive went nowhere. The Rattlers next drive was option gold as Knight used all his backs and converting a big 3rd and 1 with a 16 yard keeper. The speedy Williams scooted around the end and the Rattlers had a stunning 24-21 lead with 3:34 remaining. UNC immediately answered, converting a 2nd and 20 with a pass to Lawrence and then an Elkins to Shelton Robinson strike for 28 more yards to set up a Jeff Hayes FG on 4th and goal to te the score. The aggressive hard hitting defense of the Heels forced two quick incompletions and then sacked Knight for 11 yards and forced the Rattlers to punt with 0:41 remaining. After several short passes and time runnng down Elkins scrambled right under heavy pressure, and threw back across the field where Jon Richardson made a diving 17 yard catch and Hayes came on and hit the game winning FG from 36 yards out.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
Welcome to the Wild, Wild, West. There may not be enough room to describe all the big plays and excitement in this game. Wash St came out and decided they didnt need a run game, running only 3 times in the first half. Arkansas St. came out running with the speed of Dennis Bolden and the power of Tommy Foulks. With the score 21-14 Ark St and the first half winding down, Arkansas drove the length of the field with little QB David Hines leading the option. On a 3rd and 6 Hines picked up 18 yards but it was called back for clipping and Hines was slow to get up. The half ended on a missed FG and the score stayed 21-14. The 3rd quarter was uneventful except for a severe knee injury to Hines who had returned and the Ark St ground game slowed to a halt. QB Ryan Leaf got hot in the 3rd and 4th quarters as he threw constantly and WSU took the lead late at 31-24. Bachup Randy Reed, filling in for Hines answered through the air as he hit 5-6 passes including a 40 yard strike with 0:18 remaining to tie the game and force OT. ASU struck first with Bolden picking up 23 to set up a 2 yard Foulks run. Leaf answered with a 25 yard strike to Kevin McKenzie to tie. He came right back with a 24 yard pass to McKenzie and Michael Black scored from the 1. ASU answered converting a key 4th and 1 before Reed hit star WR Orna Middlebrook to force a 3rd OT. ASU converted a 2nd and 18 and Reed scored on a 1 yard keeper. Leaf answered again with a 9 yard slant to Chris jackson to keep this scorefest going as both teams converted 2 pt conversions. In the 4th OT Leaf again hit Jckson on a mirror image of the previous score and WR Shawn Tims caught the 2 pt conversion. After forcing Reed to hurry his throw on 4th and 3 the game game was over.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
Heavily favored Penn State was almost caught sleepwalking and had to rally to pull out the win. UConn scored on its first 2 posessions behind the running of small RB Terry Caulley and QB Dan Orlovsky hit big passes on each drive of 44 yards to O'Neil Wilson and 46 yards to Shawn Feldeisen to grab a 10-7 lead at the end of the first. PSU scored a go ahead TD in the second behind the ground game of Lydell Mitchell who became the workhorse when backup RB Pittman was injured returning kicks. The score remained 14-10 PSU for the rest of the half as neither team could string together first downs. To open the third, PSU abandoned the ground game as Burkhart went to TE Pete Johnson repeatedly before RB Mitchell hurdled into the EZ on a 4 yard run to stretch the lead to 21-10. UConn put together an 18 play drive that ate up most of the third as Caulley ran and caught passes out of the backfield. QB Orlovsky converted 2 fourth and 7's to WR Brandon Young and Caulley to keep the drive alive but had to settle for a chip shot FG after Caulley lost a yard on 3rd and goal from the one. The score remained 21-13 until early in the fourth when CB Ezra Carey picked off Burkhart to set up a first and ten at the Penn State 44 yard line. After several first downs, UConn was set back first by a penalty and then a Jack ham sack to force a 4th and 17 but Orlovsky hit WR Jason Williams and he fought for the chain to get the first down. WR Henry scored on a short pass and Caulley went in untouched on the 2 point conversion to tie the score and Happy Valley was more Concerned Valley. UConn forced a punt on the Nittany Lions next posession and took over with 3:08 remaining. Two passes to TE Tim lassen for 18 yards and a big face mask penalty set up kicker Matt Nuzie, who hit the go ahead FG from 42 yards. With only 1:17 remaining Burkhart hit TE Johnson for 10, WR Charlie Wilson for 17 ,Johnson for 6, WR Wally Cirafesi for 32, and Johnson again for 13. With 0:26 remaining and the ball on the UConn 3 yard line, Burkhart threw to the EZ and was almost picked off. On the next play he hit seldom used Glen Cole for the deciding TD. UConn had 19 seconds left but 2 short passes to WR Yung only netted 13 yards and time ran out.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
Fans of defensive football would have loved this game. With a heavy rain and lots of hits and sacks, the offenses never got going especially Cincinnati's as Oregon repeatedly stuffed any ground game and forced 7 sacks. After a scoreless first quarter things finally heated up in the second when Oregon marched 66 yards in 13 plays on the broad shoulders of RB Maurice Morris. QB Joey Harrington contributed 4 key passes as well to set up Morris' 4 yard run. Despite a floundering offense, the Bearcats struck back as KR Domink Goodman made several nice moves and rambled 77 yards before being caught from behind. A short pass and 2 Dustin Grutza scrambles led to a short Grutza TD run. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Cinc CB Antoine Horton picked off an errant Harrington throw and set the Bearcats up at Oregon's 41. A Grutza pass to WR Bill Poland and 2 throws to star TE Brent Celek set up a 36 yard FG and despite no offense to speak of, Cinc held a 10-7 lead. The score remained the same until late in the 3rd when Oregon tied the score on a 33 yard FG set up by the consistant running of Morris. Once again the Cinc defense turned the tide, as DE/LB Corey Smith picked up a Morris fumble early in the fourth and sped untouched 70 yards for the go ahead score and a 17-10 lead. Oregon's special teams came through though as speedy Allan Amundson returned the following KO 56 yards to the Bearcat 42. A Harrington pass to WR Keith Allen for 16 yards and 2 Morris runs put the ball at the 3 yard line, where it was puched in by 2nd string RB Onterrio Smith for the tie. The Oregon defense again came up with a stop and Oregon took over with 4:33 remaining. Harrington hit TE Justin Peele for 25, Samie parker for 20 and Morris contributed some more solid running to set up a FG with 2:05 remaining and a 20-17 lead. Cincinnati desperately tried to answer as Grutza scrambled and hit 3 key passes but facing a 4th and 8 from midfield, WR Mardy Gilyard was stopped a yard short and Oregon took several kneel downs for the finale.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament
A stunner....an absolute stunner!! Clemson came into this game as a darkhorse to come through in the South Region but an inconsistant offense let them down as Memphis QB repeatedly found open recievers to keep them in the game. Memphis scored first on a short FG as Clemson tough defense stopped the first drive. Clemson appeared to get things going as they went 75 yards in 4 plays thanks to a 33 yard pass from QB Homer Jordan to WR Perry Tuttle, Jordan's 24 yard keeper, and Chuck McSwain's 10 yard TD run. After a 3 and out, Clemson again ripped off big yards before having to settle for a short FG. But Memphis would not quit. Again they drove deep in Clemson territory before the Clemson defense woke up and stopped both drives. And again Memphis had to settle for 2 short FG's and you couldnt help believe that those missed chance at TD's would haunt them later. With the score 13-9 Clemson starting the second half, Clemson appeared to have awakened as they cruised 75 yards, all on the ground until Jordan hit WR Kendall Alley for an 1 yard score and a 20-9 lead. Memphis though, finally got RB DeAngelo Williams on track as he gained 30 of the 75 yards on a TD drive of their own. QB Danny Wimprine had also got untracked and ht 5 straight passes on the drive to bring the score to 20-16. Meanwhile, Clemson's offense had starting bogging down as Memphis' LB's started getting in the backfield and shutting down the option. After forcing a punt Memphis took over near midfield. RB Williams again led a drive as he gained 22 total yards and Wimprine again hit 4 consecutive passes before Wimprine lumbered in from the 3 yard line and Memphis had thier first lead. Clemson was not done and promptly went 74 yards in 12 plays, all on the ground to retake the lead 27-23. Every back was involved on the drive as FB Kevin Mack gained 29, QB Jordan 30, and Austin the 4 yard capper. Well, Memphis had caught fire and the Clemson secondary appeared to have no answer. With 4:02 remaining at their own 23, Memphis started a drive thier fans will talk about for years. With Wimprine converting a 4th and 1 at the Memphis 41, hitting WR Tavarious Davis for 14 on a 4th and 6, completing and 11 yard strike to WR Avery on 3rd and 5, Memphis was moving and chewing clock. Facing a 3rd and inches at the Clemson 8 with under a minute left, Wimprine hit Tavares Gideon for 4 yards and then Davis again for 3 yards and the score. Clemson had 42 seconds remaining to go 75 yards but Jordan was forced to scramble twice before he could pass. After a 9 yard pass to RB Austin, Jordan was sacked and all he could do was force a desperation heave which fell harmlessly to the ground and Memphis, yes Memphis advances to the next round.
