Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

This one looked like an upset for most of the first half as the NC State offense sleepwalked and Tulsa attacked with a powerful option game. NC State went 3 and out on the first posession as QB Philip Rivers was sacked on 3rd down. Tulsa could only manage 20 yards but that was enough for K Stu Crum to hit a 46 yarder. NC State had a nice 19 yard gain on the next drive but it was called back for clipping and they punted again. Tulsa would strike quickly as RB Eddie Hamilton got outside and sped 42 yards for the score and a stunning 10-0 lead. State's offense continued to sputter but thier aggressive defense stepped up forcing a Tulsa fumble at the end of the 1st quarter to set up good field position. The crowd was just waiting for Rivers to come alive, but 3 plays later Rivers missed his reciever on 4th and 8 to give the ball back. The teams exchanged punts as the defenses dominated. State finally got a drive going late in the 2nd as they moved from thier 31 to the Tulsa 29 as Rivers hit big TE Sean Berton for a 22 yard gain, but once again Rivers went cold with 3 incompletions before giving up a sack on 4th and 10. Tulsa capitalized and RB Michael Gunter gained enough yards to set up a long FG with around a minute remaining in the half. Up to this point, NC State appeared to just be happy to be there. But momentum changed as they took over on thier own 13. On first down Rivers threw deep to the streaking Jericho Cotchery for 39 yards, then T.A. McClendon for 14, Sterling Hicks for 32, to set up a short pass to TE Berton with 0:08 remiaining in the half. So despite doing nothing, they were only down 13-7. The State defense opened the 3rd stuffing Tulsa's option game and forced a punt. With a short field, Rivers stayed hot hitting Berton again, and then agin on a short pass that Berton turned into a 29 yard TD by just storming over defenders and State led 14-13. Tulsa tried to answer but a crucial penalty stopped one drive and then on the next QB Skip Ast injured an ankle. Backup QB Scott Brown stepped in a continued the drive. Tulsa used 17 plays as QB alternated getting the ball to the stable of backs. Backup FB Brett White picked up 19 to set up first and goal at the State 4 yard line. 2 runs netted -1 yards and on 3rd down FB White appeared to have a lane to paydirt but it closed and he was knocked backwards at the 1 inch line. A short FG gave Tulsa a 16-14 lead. NC State's offense remained hot though and Rivers hit TE Berton on a nice play action fake for 21 yards and then completed the drive with a 34 yard hook up with Sterling Hicks. The try for 2 was good as Rivers went beck to Hicks again. Tulsa would have another chance though and took over with 4:45 remaining. QB Ast returned to the game and went to work. Tula moved down the field as Ast kept on keepers and chewed clock. Facing a 3rd and 3, Ast kept for a 7 yard conversion and then facing a 4th and 19 at thr State 35, Ast avoided the sack and hit Rb Rodney Young for 21. But the clock was against them. They reached State's 7 yard line and after a reciever dropped a TD on 3rd down, Ast threw wildly on 4th down and State had a tough, hard earned victory.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

For those that weren't aware, Utah State came into this game with a strong armed, agile QB that liked to gamble...pretty much just like West Virginia's Major Harris. But after outplaying Harris for most of the game, he just didn't have the supporting cast. WVA took a 7-0 lead on the first drive behind the running of A.B. Brown and a nice 31 yard pass from Harris to TE Keith Winn to set up a short TD by Undra Johnson. Utah St. struggled on its next two drives as Adams was inaccurate and WVA's Renaldo Turnbull turned up the heat with the pass rush. Late in the first, Utah St. used a short field to even the score as Adams hit WR Kelley Diest for a 7 yard score. WVA DB Dave Lockwood picked off an errant Adams pass and 4 lays later Johnson scored his second TD after A.B. Brown did the dirty work, picking up 36 yards on the carries. Utah St. answered right back as RB Jerry Hughes picked up a coule of first downs and then Adams escaped the rush and ran 33 yards to set up an Archie Gibson TD and a 14-14 score. That score would hold the rest of the half as both teams bogged down. The passing stats at the half were unimpressive as Harris hit only 3-11, and Adams was 7-18. West Virginia struck first in the 3rd as Brown picked up chunks of yards and then Harris finally made a nice throw on a 23 yard pass to Grantis Bell for the go ahead TD. Utah St. answered back with a FG, as Adams also warmed up, completing passes for 21, 25, and 19 yards on the drive. The score stayed 21-17 WVA until halfway through the 4th when Adams hit 8 straight passes to move the Aggies from thier own 20 to the WVA 20 but facing a 3rd and 12 threw a ball up for grabs in the EZ. DB Darrell Whitmore picked it off to end the threat. Utah St. had one chance late to take the lead but Adams was sacked on his own 29 and fumbled the ball away and WVA ran out the clock.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

The story line was, can Duke stop TCU RB LaDanian Tomlinson, and could TCU stop the passing game of Duke? The answers were yes and no, but TCU still pulled out the victory as backup QB Sean Stilley was on fire. After exchanging punts to start the game, Duke finally got going as QB Billy Ray hit WR Greg Downs twice for 38 yards and then star WR Clarkston Hines for an 18 yard TD. TCU took the field with QB Stilley under center, replacing versatile QB Casey Printers who suffered a broken elbow on the previous drive. Stilley hit 4 consecutive passes to even the score on a strike to WR Laterance Dunbar. Duke answered with a long drive of thier own as Ray stayed hot and added in some key runs by RB Roger Boone. TCU's Rickey Madison took the ensuing kick off and sped 102 yards for the score, but it was called back on a clipping penalty. The drive however, did put points on the board as Tomlinson picked up tough yards and Stilley hit 5 more consecutive passes to lead to a FG. Down 14-10 with 1:16 remaining in the half, TCU moved 62 yards in 5 play as Stilley hit Dunbar for 50 yards and then FB George Layne for a 9 yard score with only 0:15 remaining to take a 17-14 lead. Both defenses stepped up in the 3rd but towards the end, Duke moved 67 yards as RB Boone picked up 13 and 23 yards on runs before human battering ram Randy Cuthbert came in to punch in the go ahead score at 21-20. TCU returned fire as the 4th began with another long drive led by the passing of Stilley. Tomlinson picked up the tough yards and punched it in from the 3. Dunbar converted the 2 point conversion and TCU led 28-21. Duke drove back but after a sack on 3rd down Duke settled for a 41 yard FG. TCU tried to run clock but the Duke defense continued to key on Tomlinson and forced a punt. With 1:18 remaining Duke made a last gasp as Ray hit Downs and Hines to move to midfield but a sack on 3rd down forced a big 4th and 12 to stay alive. WR Keith Ewell was stopped for a 9 yard gain and the game was over.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

Both defenses were strong but it was the suffocating Baylor defense combined with the accuracy of QB Jay Jeffrey that won the game. Temple could only manage 185 yards as Temple QB Brian Broomell was sacked 4 times, intercepted once and constantly harrassed. Baylor's offense consisted of get the ball to powerful RB Walter Abercrombie as much as possible, let Jeffrey try to convert 3rd downs, and let the defense control field position....and it worked.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

A game only a defensive coordinator would love. UCLA drove 60 yards on thier first posession behind the running of Wendell Tyler and FB Jim Brown to take a 3-0 lead on a FG. North Texas' offense suffered a blow late in the first when RB Michael Jones went out with an injury. Without him, the offense struggled. But UCLA's offense was completely shut down as the d-line zeroed in on running QB John Sciarra. To further compound the struggling offenses, N. Texas missed a long FG in the second and UCLA missed in the 3rd. As the 4th quarter started, 2nd string RB went out with an injury, but 3rd RB Walter Sims picked up 27 yards on 3 carries and then 4th strng RB Lee English picked up 8 to set up a 19 yard FG to tie the score at 3-3. UCLA went 3 and out and then strong legged N. Texas kicker missed a 50 yard attempt to take the lead. UCLA took over at thier own 33 with 2:12 remaining. 10 plays later, thanks to the running of Tyler and RB Eddie Ayers, Brett White kicked a 24 yard FG as time expired to escape with a 6-3 victory.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

A big upset as Indiana used a powerful ground game to stifle Oregon State. Indiana struck first as QB Harry Gonso rn for 22, FB Terry Cole picked up 17, and then Gonso ran twice more to take a 7-0 lead. The Hoosier defense forced a 3 and out and then struck again. The ground game again was hard to stop as they chewed up yards and time. Disaster was averted when QB Gonso went out with an injury, but would return later. After backup QB Bill Perry was sacked, the drive fizzled and had to settle for a 10-0 lead after a short FG. Oregon St. was handicapped on the following drive, as star RB Ken Simonton was knocked out and would not return. With Simonton gone, OSU went to the pass and all but abandoned the ground game. With the lead 10-3, Indiana put together an impressive drive as FB Cole pounded the middle and Gonso finally went to the air, hitting star John Isenbarger for 18 and 15 yards to set up a Gonso TD. Down 17-3, Oregon State needed a score before half, and got it as QB Jonathan Smith hit WR Chad Johnson for 57 yards and then TE Martin Mauer 2 plays later to end the half at 17-10. The 3rd quarter was a series of long drives for both teams that ended in FG's and the score was 23-13 as the 4th started. OSU's Smith fumbled on his own 48 on the first play of the 4th and Indiana capitalized. Gonso picked up 10, Isenbarger 11, and then Gonso hit Isenbarger for 19 more to set up FB Cole's 3 yard TD and a 30-13 lead. The lead stretched to 33-13 before a late OSU TD on a beautiful pass from Smith to WR Seth Trimmer but it was too late.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

What looked like a fun offensive shootout turned into a one sided beating as QB Alex Smith destroyed the Hawaii defense nd Utah scored 42 unanswered points in the first half. What cant be understated was the Utah defense pressuring QB Colt Brennan and forcing sacks and 2 interceptions by star safety Eric Weddle tp prevent Hawaii from mounting any sustained drives.

Re: Football Madness-Metallicarl's Historical Football Tournament

Key to the matchup was Minnesota's RB duo of Marion Barber and Lawrence Maroney versus Virginia's Big 3 of WR Herman Moore, RB Terry Kirby, and QB Shawn Moore. But Virginia's defense came to play and shut down the Minnesota offense as LB's Yusef Jackson, P.J. Killian, and Chris Slade dominated. Virginia took an early lead as they rode the back Terry Kirby wth help from backup Nikki Fisher. They scored TD's on thier first 3 drives and forced the Gophers to pass more often then they were capable of. They did manage 2 scores in the 2nd to cut the lead to 21-10, but Virginia QB Shawn Moore hit WR Herman Moore twice, including another TD, as they opened the 2nd half with a 75 yard drive to demoralize the Gophers.
