UAB football's future hanging in balance

One day after scoring one of the biggest victories in school history, the future of the football program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is hanging in the balance.

A report from Sports Illustrated claims the school plans to announce this week that is shutting down its football program. The report also claims Athletic Director Brian Mackin won't be retained. SI reported that an announcement is planned for Thursday.

UAB has not commented directly on the reports, and a spokesman reiterated the school's previous comments to the AP regarding the football program's future.

Rose Bowl for the ages; Bama vs. UAB

The Big Brother never played the little brother. However, the BCS has forced the two teams to play.

"It's exciting here in Alabama," said head coach Timothy Fox. "With everything going on with our program, to get a shot at the program that's essentially shutting us down, this is great."

University of Alabama board of trustees is set to vote tomorrow as to whether or not keep the UAB football program. Many sources have reported they will not.

"I wish they'd wait to see until after the game," said junior quarterback Austin Brown.

The two schools would have never played, and fans throughout Birmingham are seeing allegiances drawn.

"I thought my neighbor and I saw eye-to-eye, but he put up that Roll tide flag," said Jimmy Smith, 46 of Birmingham. "One less person I have to worry about, I guess."

The Rose Bowl is set to kickoff on January 1st at 2:30 p.m. CST. Alabama is 11-1, ranked sixth and the UAB Blazers are undefeated at 13-0, winners of their last 23 games, and ranked fourth.

UAB CANCELS FOOTBALL

The university announced the decision Tuesday, minutes after president Ray Watts met with Blazers players and coaches, while several hundred UAB students and fans gathered outside for the third straight day in efforts to support the program. UAB made the decision after a campus-wide study conducted by a consulting firm over the past year.

UAB is the first major college football program since Pacific in 1995 to shut down.

Players cried and hugged after leaving the meeting. An emotional coach Timothy Fox, who just completed his first season with a 13-0 record, briefly addressed supporters, saying players, families and coaches were all hurting. UAB is eligible for only its third bowl appearance and second since 2004.

UAB will have to pay $2.425 million for canceling future games with Tennessee, Kentucky, Troy, South Alabama and Georgia State, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy. UAB was scheduled to play Tennessee in Nashville in 2015 and at Kentucky in 2016.

UAB must pay Tennessee $925,000 and Kentucky $500,000 to get out of those games. The Blazers also must pay for canceling future home-and-home series in 2015 and 2016 with Troy ($400,000), South Alabama ($300,000) and Georgia State ($300,000), which will cost UAB a total of $1 million to end.

Eliminating football jeopardizes UAB's membership in Conference USA and associated programs including the school's marching band, though the school said it hopes to remain in the league and Division I. Members of the band and cheerleaders joined in protests on campus.

Playing in the shadows of Southeastern Conference powers Alabama and Auburn and lacking an on-campus stadium, UAB has struggled to develop a fan base and consistent attendance in the nearly two decades since it joined the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Average attendance doubled this year under Fox to more than 30,000 per game, but reports circulated that administrators might kill the program even as the Blazers compiled their best record in school history.

The school will honor the BCS acceptance and play in the Rose Bowl for their final game, even though they'll receive over $20 million for appearing in the game.

TIMOTHY HIRED AT IOWA STATE

With the shut down of the UAB program, the hottest coach in the NCAA was set to take any job he could have this off season. He only interviewed at two.

Kentucky and Iowa State.

Though, Pittsburgh and Arkansas and Louisiana Lafayette all through the kitchen sink at the young gun from Oklahoma, he chose Iowa State.

"I love the Big 12," said Timothy Fox. "There is potential here."

Iowa State was a cool 2-10 last season, losing by an average of 34.3 points per game.

Asked if he was going to try and sway some former UAB kids to Ames and he said, "now I can't let you know all my secrets."

Sources already put Senior quarterback Austin Brown in Ames just hours after coach Fox had signed his contract. Though, they were unrelated we're told.

Austin Brown granted immediate waiver from NCAA
The 6-1 senior from Des Moinse, Iowa has been granted a waiver to play immediately, as has all former UAB players. Brown followed Fox to Iowa State.

However, it's been said Brown, who's a native of Iowa, was looking there before Fox took the job.

Brown, who's thrown for 9,263 yards on 64.4 percent of his passes. He's also thrown 91 touchdowns and just 16 interceptions.
