MARIOTTA OR WINSTON?

Tampa, FL -
Five weeks in and it’s still way too early to decide the debate of who is the better quarterback. Marcus Mariotta or Jamies Winston. Let’s look at the evidence anyway.

Winston – 97/165 58% 1,199 yards, 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. 89.9 passer rating. 36 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown.
Mariotta – 68/94 72% 749 yards 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. 92.9 passer rating. 32 carries for 106 yards, no touchdowns.

Each has their case. Winston has been asked to do a lot more and may have less talent around him. His eight TD passes is tied for seventh in the league with Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger. The Bucs are 1-4, last in the NFC South.

Mariotta, who has played one less game, is more of a role player for the team so far as they have leaned on their running game. His completion percentage is impressive, tied for first among QBs with at least 75 attempts. Tennessee is 3-1 and atop the AFC South.

“It’s impossible to compare at this point. They play in different schemes and have been asked to do different things. It’s pointless to even debate it at this point.” One NFL GM told me via a phone call yesterday. A few more calls netted similar responses.

I’ll tell you this, each coach (and GM for that matter) thinks they’ve got the better player.

Ask me again in ten years.

FREEFALLING: LSU’S GRIFFIN’S STOCK PLUMMETING

After starting the season near the top of most draft boards LSU pass rusher Lamar Griffin has fallen fast and is now an early second rounder on most boards.

“I don’t pay no attention to that stuff. You can’t worry about that.” Griffin told me on the phone yesterday.

The reason for Griffin’s drop is that he has not recorded a sack in LSU’s last four games. After starting the season with back to back three sack games against McNeese State (where he only played two quarters) and Mississippi State Griffin has been blanked against Auburn, Syracuse, Eastern Michigan and South Carolina. Griffin has primarily lined up on the left side of the defense, facing less talented right tackles. He has not matched up against any NFL prospects during that stretch.

“It looks to me like he takes a lot of plays off.” One NFL scout told me. “Not a high motor guy.”

“We definitely need to see more. Right now there’s not enough to go on.” A scout from a pass rusher needy team explained. “We need to see better work habits, better effort. Physically, all the pieces are there.”

Griffin is in his final year at LSU, where he was originally recruited as a fullback. After his freshman year, where he saw spot duty on offense and starred on special teams, he was moved to linebacker. As a sophomore he played primarily in the middle of the defense. He focused in the weight room before his junior season and was moved to a DE/OLB role where his primary assignment was to rush the passer. In just nine games he recorded 12 sacks before a dislocated shoulder cut his season short.

Griffin was on a number of preseason watch lists and looked to be on his way to a number of awards and a high draft spot before this recent dry spell.

“You can’t force it. Sometimes it just isn’t there.” Kansas City pass rusher Justin Houston explained, giving Griffin the benefit of the doubt. “Sometime sacks come in bunches. There’s a lot of factors. Offenses, especially in college, that try to get the ball out fast. Lots of talent around him. I wouldn’t call him a bust just yet.”

In a league that is as hungry for pass rushers as the quarterbacks they get paid to chase Griffin will certainly get a pass for now, though without a breakout game soon he could continue to drop on most draft boards.

A TRUE TEST

High on a three game win streak the 49ers will face a tough test Sunday when they play host to the 4-1 Ravens. Jim Harbaugh is expected to be in attendance as a guest of his brother, John, the Baltimore head coach.

What to Look For
Baltimore ran their record to 3-0 with wins over Denver, Oakland and Cincy before dropping a close one to Pittsburgh in week four. Last week they bounced back with a 30-25 win over the Browns.

Baltimore is 4th in total yards allowed, 5th in passing yards allowed, 2nd in rushing yards allowed and tied for 3rd in points allowed.

On offense, the Ravens have the league’s 2nd highest yardage total, they are 5th in passing yardage and 6th in rushing yards. They average 26.4 points per game, just 14th best in the league.

Joe Flacco has thrown for all 1,464 yards along with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He has a passer rating of 94.7. Lorenzo Taliaferro leads the team with 332 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He’s filling in for the injured Justin Forsett, who is out with a groin injury. On the receiving end of the bulk of Flacco’s passes have been Marlon Brown (27/411/3), Steve Smith Sr. (26/472/4) and Dennis Pitta (22/186/0).

On the other side of the ball linebacker C.J. Mosely leads the team with 32 total tackles. Terrell Suggs has 26 tackles, 5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He leads the team in the last two categories. Kendrick Lewis, Josh Robinson and Jerron McMillian each have one of the teams’ three interceptions.

Baltimore is a solid all-around team who will likely cause problems for the 49ers.
