We got thrashed by the mighty Texas Longhorns, in Austin Texas to the tune of 66-17.
Texas won the opening coin toss. They also ended up winning in every other category in this football game. The game started off terribly for your Owls, surrendering a 19 yard scrambling TD to backup Texas QB Colt McCoy. After a solid, but not necessarily productive FAU drive, we punted the football back to Texas with roughly 5 minutes gone in the first quarter. Texas didn't take too long again on offense. This time, they led a much more methodical, and deliberate drive, capped with a one yard plunge into the endzone by Senior Jonathan Gray. However, your Owls would not go down without some sort of fight. With great rushing gains from Jonathan Wallace and the occasional improvisation from QB Stephen Curtis, the Owls were able to create a drive that was capped off with a 10 yard run by the QB. Again, Texas responded quick, really quick. After a great return set the potent offense up at their 40 yard line, one pass to Marcus Johnson restored Texas' 14 point lead. With time winding down in the 1st quarter, FAU need something. They got that "something" on a RB pass, from QB/H-Back Melvin German III who threw a laser, pin-point pass to leading receiver William Dukes for a 59 yard, 7 point score.
For the beginning of the second quarter, FAU looked like they had settled into the game. They forced Texas to punt, twice and looked to be in relative control for awhile after the big, trick play to end the first 15 minute frame. However, the offense's output, did not reflect the defense's hard work as they stuttered. They couldn't generate anything, as they traded punts with Texas. With a little over halfway gone in the second quarter, Texas finally found their "groove" again. Gray, led the Longhorns on an owl hunt. He tore apart the front-7 as well as the secondary, scoring 3 TDs within the back half of the quarter. Texas did a great job of shutting down our deep attack, that we relied so much on as they limited the explosive Jenson Stoshak to a 1 reception, and 7 yards after the first half.
The second half began, well for the Owls, considering they were facing a 42-14 deficit. They held Texas to very short drives, and had relatively long drives of their own. They spread the ball out well, and didn't allow for many negative plays. Every starting skill-position player on offense touched the ball at least once. However, FAU was unable to get past the threshold they needed as they simply kick a 37 yard, Mitch Anderson field goal, cutting the large deficit down, by only 3 to 42-17. The 3 points scored would be their last, as Texas like they always did responded to the Owls, with another Marcus Johnson touchdown, this time from 30 yards out.
With the game decided for sometime now, and stats boosted for Longhorns players, the backups came in. And again, the FAU defense held Texas somewhat in check for the first half of the final frame. They traded punts. However, FAU needed points not punts. A few failed 4th down attempts, 2 in the forth and 1 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, were not enough for the Owls to make the game close. Nathan Jordan added a 42 yard field goal, while Michael Brown scored on a 9 yard run with 2:16 to go in the blowout and again, this time on an 81 yard massacre on the front 7 and secondary, with only 1:24 to go.
FAU looks to rebound against this violation from Texas, who moved up 3 spots to #9 in the nation, against MTSU when C-USA play resumes. Texas takes on #23 Kansas State, in what is sure to be a great matchup.

This week, the Owls stay home, for the second time this season as they take on the (2-1, 0-0) Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders in their second C-USA game this season.
FAU (1-2, 0-1) comes back to Boca Raton after a bad loss at the hands of #9 Texas, while MTSU is looking for its first conference win in its first conference game this season.
Looking to get back on track for the Owls, on Saturday, is Jenson Stoshak. Stoshak, once named an impact player, has had a very lacklustre past two weeks for the Owls. He has had a very respectable 10 catches for 153 however, has dropped 6 passes over that time frame. Included in those drops were a potential 50 yard touchdown. In the last two games, he had 0 TDs.
A player looking to continue his success is DB Keith Reaser. Reaser has had a very productive season thus far, with 2 interceptions and 12 tackles. Undoubtedly, the team's best pass defender, he looks to pick apart the MTSU offense which relies on a steady diet of passing.
It's bound to be a great C-USA matchup in Boca Raton. We had the Owls winning at the start of the year, and we're sticking to it. Owls 24, Blue Raiders 20.
