Thanks. I've had a soft spot for Kansas myself ever since their 12-1 season back in '07. They're just like Duke and Kentucky in that they all have amazing basketball programs but mediocre football programs (except for Duke who has enjoyed success recently under David Cutcliffe).

Re: Kansas Jayhawks Dynasty (NCAA 14)

A few things before the first games are posted:

Since I did not decide to post the dynasty here until after I had played the Rice game, the first three Top 25s and Heisman Watches will not be posted (we have a bye in Week 1).
Also, I played WR Nick Harwell in the games against Louisiana Tech and Texas Tech (and all games as a kick returner) not knowing that he had transferred from Miami (OH) and was supposed to be sitting the year out. So, I will stop playing him.

Re: Kansas Jayhawks Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Almost a Howler

South Dakota keeps it close, but Kansas shrugs off upset bid in 4th to win 37-21.

Coach Bradwell's debut did not go as expected, with their opponents, the South Dakota Coyotes, keeping a close game and having a really good chance to win it before Kansas pulled away for the win.

South Dakota had three trips to the redzone, but only converted on one of them, that being a TD at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The other two trips ended up as interceptions by the Jayhawks defense, who stepped up to cause 3 of them. Two came from Cassius Sendish, a FS who cemented his spot as a starter after winning a preseason battle against Isaiah Johnson.

QB Jake Heaps had an inaccurate day as well, only completing 45 percent of his passes for 260 yards and a touchdown. 144 of those 260 were received by tight end Jimmay Mundine, who has become one of Heaps's favorite targets.

Both teams got TDs in the first quarter, before Kansas attacked in the second to take a 17-7 lead. The Coyotes answered back, but KU got a field goal at the end of the half to lead 20-14.

The only score in the third quarter was a field goal by Kansas, but USD scored early in the fourth to scare the Jayhawks and make it a one score game. Fortunately, they were having none of that, and they scored two with less than five minutes to finish the upset bid.

Next week, the Jayhawks travel to Houston to play Rice (0-1).

Re: Kansas Jayhawks Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Steamed Rice

Kansas escapes Houston with 20-17 win over Rice.

Kansas, after a terrible first quarter where they got nowhere and fell behind, woke up in the second quarter, scoring 17 unanswered and ultimately winning 20-17, although not without a late scare from Rice.

Rice's pass attack was pretty good, with QB Taylor McHargue throwing for 271 yards, with 119 of them coming from Jordan Taylor. On the other side, senior halfback James Sims had another solid game, running for 116 and 2 touchdowns on 27 carries.

Jayhawks QB Josh Heaps had an poor day through the air, only throwing for 157 yards and an INT. The Kansas offense and him (yes, that's proper grammar) started off poorly, getting nothing in their first four posessions. However, the defense stepped up, only allowing two field goals in Rice's two first posessions (with the second being a 57 yarder from senior Chris Boswell), as well as a missed field goal and 5-play drive. From there, the offense finally found its groove, making up for the poor first quarter with a 17-point second quarter to lead 17-6 at the half.

Both teams traded field goals in the third quarter, but late in the fourth, down 20-9, Rice drove down the field and scored to make it 20-15. They converted the two-point conversion to make it 20-17. Kansas ended up going three and out, giving Rice a chance to win the game. But a four-and-out for Rice effectively ended the game, giving Kansas the win and making their season already and improvement from the last one.

The Jayhawks return home for a game against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (2-1) next week.

Kansas Sets Sights on 4-Star Athlete

Kansas has emerged as one of the top schools in the running for 4-star athlete Deon Bonner, the #25 athlete and #99 prospect in the 2014 recruiting class, Journal World reports. Standing at 6'0" and weighing 210 pounds, Bonner plays running back and wide receiver for Muskogee High School in Muskogee, OK. Also in the running for Bonner is Alabama, Oregon, Arizona, and Georgia Tech.

Bradwell Wants Border War

Kansas head coach Davis Bradwell has expressed interest in bringing back the yearly rivalry between Kansas and Missouri. "[The rivalry] was a very bitter and important rivalry between the two schools. It was arguably their biggest rivalry" Bradwell stated. "I believe that a rivalry like this, one that traces all the way back to the Civil War, should continue. After all, Missouri can't keep the Indian War Drum forever, can they?"
The Border War was first played in 1891. Since then, according to the NCAA, Missouri leads the series 56-55-9, although due to the 1960 game being forfeited to Missouri, they claim that they lead 57-54-9. The rivalry ceased when Missouri moved to the SEC in 2012.

Re: Kansas Jayhawks Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Nearly Bitten

Kansas needs game-winning field goal to beat Louisiana Tech, 30-28.

Despite dominating the game against the Bulldogs with 616 yards of offense to their 437, Kansas did not maintain the ball enough. Quarterback Jake Heaps threw three picks, all in or near the redzone, to allow LTU to overcome a 13-point deficit and force Kansas to kick a game-winning field goal with a second left to win, 30-28.

"We nearly gave them the game." Kansas coach Davis Bradwell said. "We can't throw away chances like that."

Louisiana Tech came out of the gates running, scoring twice for a 14-7 lead. Their defensive line shut down Kansas's run, holding senior HB James Sims to just 22 yards in 10 carries before he was knocked out of the game early in the 2nd quarter. But from there, backup Darrian Miller came in and opened things up completely, running for 173 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. This in part allowed Kansas to open up a 17-14 lead at the break, as well as a 27-14 lead late in the third quarter.

However, Louisiana Tech wasn't done yet. With the third quarter winding down, Bulldogs running back Kenneth Dixon broke two tackles in an 88 yard run to make it a 27-21 game. He had a huge day, running for 194 yards on just 15 carries as well as that touchdown. They would again drive down the field to take the lead midway through the 4th. Kansas go the ball and had a long possession, but turned it over on downs as they were in field goal position but were trying to run the clock. LTU would go three-and-out, giving Kansas one more chance with all three of their timeouts. Kansas would oblige, driving down the field as well as running the clock out to set up a game-winning field goal by freshman kicker Matthew Wynan.

With the win, the Jayhawks complete non-conference play with a 3-0 record. Two weeks from now is the Big 12 opener against Texas Tech (2-2), who has had a poor season so far.
