Re: The Beginning of a New Era- Ft. Storm Jackson
Minnesota dominates UNLV in season opener
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota-- The Golden Gophers opened up their season at home playing against the UNLV Rebles. Minnesota fans were excited to see what new coach Storm Jackson could bring to the table.
It Begun early for Minnesota when they scored a touchdown on their very first drive when freshman running back Rodney Smith ran in from seven yards out. The defense continued to push and forced a three and out on the second drive of the game. They ended up scoring a field goal on the next possession and later in the second quarter, freshman running back Rodney Smith scored yet another touchdown, this one just from one yard out. The Rebles would end up getting into field goal range and kicking a field goal before the half and they would be down 17-3. In an interview with coach Storm Jackson at halftime, he said that "his team played well in the first half, and made a comment saying that everyone was getting a little taste of what the freshman running back was going to do this season" The second half begun, and in what was a very long drive, Minnesota capped it off with a three yard run from Rodrick Williams Jr. and Minnesota would go up 24-3. UNLV answered right back with a quick drive that resulted in a twenty-two yard touchdown reception by Aaron Criswell and UNLV would move it down to a 14 point deficit. Minnesota begun the fourth quarter with a field goal, and in an attempt to score more points, UNLV quarterback Blake Decker threw a deep pass that was intercepted by Briean Boddy-Calhoun and returned for a sixty nine yard touchdown. Minnesota ended up winning 37-10 in what looked like a great showing both offensively and defensively despite playing a weaker school. Storm Jackson in a post game presser said "We came in and lit a fire from the very beginning and we kept momentum throughout the game. This Minnesota team is one of the most underrated teams in the NCAA and we're gonna prove to the critics we're a top 25 team" Here is a box score from the game:
