The Underdogs Prevail: Sonoma State Makes a Comeback to Take Down FIU 49-44

HB #33 snags a TD pass to make it a 2 score game | Isaac Johnson gets a second interception to help seal the win

Rohnert Park, CA -- Sonoma State made it seven in a row at home this week by taking down the 10 point favorite FIU Panthers. The win did not come easy, as Brian Givens easily had the worst game of his season so far, throwing three interceptions in the process.

Sonoma State found the endzone first, with HB #33 running it in from seven yards out. FIU answered quickly though, and it looked like the game would continue that way. Sonoma would walk into the second quarter with a 14-10 lead. They followed that with another touchdown by HB #33 and it was 21-10.

Brian Givens was on fire in the first quarter, going 8/8. The second quarter, however, was a major regression. Givens was sacked twice and threw three interceptions, with CB #23 snagging two of them. CB #23 ran both back for touchdowns, and the Seawolves found themselves trailing 31-21 at the half.

In the second half, Givens really turned it around. After Givens hit Randall for a 12 yard touchdown, Isaac Johnson got the ball back with a quick interception. Givens then found TE #44 in the endzone on a play action from 19 yards out. Sonoma suddenly had a 35-31 lead midway through the third, and the sellout crowd was loving it.

After forcing a punt, Givens threw his third touchdown of the second half, hitting HB #33 over the middle from 8 yards out. FIU was driving, until Isaac Johnson yet again managed to pick of QB #7. HB #33 ran in his third touchdown of the game from 20 yards out and Sonoma was in the drivers seat, leading 49-31.

FIU gave Sonoma a late scare. After a long fourth down touchdown, they recovered an onside kick. They followed it up with another 30 yard touchdown to come within 5, trailing 49-44. The Seawolves covered up the ensuing onside kick and Givens was able to take a knee to run out the clock.

The win marked three in a row for the Seawolves, who relied on a strong running game when Givens struggled. They ran for over 250 yards while throwing for another 240. Coach Wright expressed his thoughts on the game with praise for his players.

"It was great to see we could lean on HB #33 and HB #6 when Brian [Givens] struggled through the air. It was also great to see Brian bounce back after making a few ill advised passes. Overall, I am really happy with the win." - Sonoma State HC Scott Wright

Sonoma State will have a week off next week, followed by a trip to Denton to face the Mean Green. The Seawolves are the heavy favorite in the contest, especially with an extra week to rest and game plan. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPNU, the kickoff time is TBD.

Lowering The Boom: Sonoma State Beats Up on North Texas, Wins 63-7

Lukas Williams picks off a pass and takes it for a TD | Brian Givens tosses one of four TD passes

Denton, TX -- Home field advantage did nothing to help the lowly North Texas team, as the Mean Green got embarrassed by a far superior west coast opponent. Sonoma State started the beating early, scoring on their first two drives to head into the second quarter up 14-0. From there, it only got uglier.

As the Mean Green were driving toward the endzone to make it a game, Lukas Williams picked off QB #6 and ran it back 88 yards for a touchdown. Sonoma would score two more offensively before North Texas would find the end zone on a lucky 74 yard bomb.

With a minute before the half, the Sonoma offense wasn't done. Brian Givens shredded the Mean Green defense with a five play drive, resulting in a ten yard touchdown pass. The Seawolves led 42-7 at the half.

The Seawolves defense terrorized the home team, racking up five interception on the day. The Mean Green would visit the redzone two more times in the game, resulting in a fumble at the 1 yard line and a 4th down failure at the 1 as well.

"To say our defense showed up today would be an understatement. They wreaked havoc and I loved it. The turnovers really allowed us to thrive." - Sonoma State HC Scott Wright

The defense clearly wasn't the only high point. Brian Givens went for over 300 yards in the first half. He also only missed one pass all day, leading TE #44 a bit too much while he was scrambling. Givens was pulled in the 4th quarter to give senior Ron Bowman some reps.

Sonoma State returns home next week to face Southern Miss. A win would put the Seawolves undefeated through their first half of conference play, and could put them squarely in the drivers seat of the C-USA west. The kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 P.M. PST, but the game will not be broadcast outside of the on campus channel and radio programming.

Recruiting Update

Rising Stock: Nine Recruits Commit To Sonoma In Last Two Weeks

Rohnert Park, CA -- Sonoma State has had nine recruits verbally commit over the past two weeks, showing the programs is starting to garner more interest than ever. The Seawolves are now an older team, with over 30 juniors on the roster. As such, their recruiting efforts have clearly been focused on grooming replacements for players they expect to be leaving in the next couple years. Sonoma State has finally started to reach outside of California for recruits, and so far they have landed three from neighboring states. Lets take a look:

Sonoma State Seawolves Recruiting - 2016
NAMEPOSCLASSHOMETOWNHTWTCALIBER

Clifton WilliamsGHSPhoenix, Arizona6'5"293
Marcus WilliamsDEHSReno, Nevada6'3"248
Lee EvansTHSAzusa, California6'4"330

Analysis:Tyson McNeil will likely redshirt at quarterback, since Brian Givens has one year left to give. After that, it looks like he and Brandon Jefferson will battle it out for the starting spot. McNeil is much more of a pocket passer between the two, and has shown better accuracy on the long ball.

Benjamin Brant and Ed Williams will probably both redshirt next season, even with the talk that HB #33 may leave early for the NFL. Both young men are power runners, and Brant has shown exceptional strength and great hands.

Wallace Noble is one who may see playing time as a freshman. The three star recruit could be a valuable asset to a struggling interior on the defensive front. If possible, you can bet the coaches will push to have Noble greyshirt in order to make a big impact early.

The Seawolves do not have a big recruiting class this year, as they have so few players leaving. As such, the staff can have a big focus on game planning throughout this season.

Week 9: Sonoma State Vs. Southern Miss

Give 'em Another: Sonoma Defeats Southern Miss 38-31 For 5th Straight Win

HB #33 breaks free for a long touchdown | Chase Browne snags a first down pass to run out the clock

Rohnert Park, CA -- The Sonoma State Seawolves defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles today to tie their longest winning streak in school history. The Win also marked their eighth in a row at home, tying UCLA for the fourth longest streak in the nation.

Sonoma State had extra bleachers put in the mezzanine level to accommodate 36,000 fans for the game. As football becomes a bigger part of the community, the Seawolves feed on the support.

"Its great to see the support we get. People here are excited about this team, and we thrive on it. I only hope it continues." - Sonoma State HC Scott Wright

The Seawolves started off the festivities with HB #33 snagging an 11 yard touchdown pass from Brian Givens. The teams would trade touchdowns until even at 14 a piece. HB #33 broke free from 33 yards out to take a 21-14 lead with under a minute in the half. With little time, Southern Miss settled for a field goal to trail 21-17 at the midway point.

Southern Miss came out strong in the second half with Parsons running it in from a yard out to lead 24-21. The Seawolves never panicked, and drove right back down the field. Daniel McNeal grabbed a 6 yard touchdown from Brian Givens to put them back on top 28-24. After a well timed interception from Deon Harper, the fullback Thomas would force his way into the endzone from 1 yard out to put Sonoma in control 35-24. A Late touchdown from the Golden Eagles made it a one score game with 1:24 left. The Seawolves recovered the onside kick and managed two first downs to run out the clock.

Both defenses were porous at times, allowing both Sonoma State's Brian Givens and Southern Miss' QB #4 to throw for over 300 yards. The big difference maker was HB #33 of Sonoma. On just 12 carries he managed 181 yards and two touchdowns, while snagging 4 passed for another 55 yards and a touchdown. Brian Givens was also sacked five times by a strong Southern Miss defensive front.

The win puts Sonoma State at 4-0 in conference, tied for the division lead with Louisiana Tech. The Seawolves travel to El Paso next week to take on the UTEP Miners. UTEP hasn't managed a win in conference yet and will need to slow down a high scoring Seawolves offense. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. EST, the game is available on radio broadcast only.

Its almost the norm at this point! He has absolutely been the MVP for my team so far. He's great running and very active in the passing game. Our offense relies on him in a big way, even though Givens has been having his best year.

I'm actually starting to think he may bolt for the NFL at the end of the year. He's a RS Junior and an 84 overall, but he's putting up monster numbers. I can't stop him if he leaves per my house rules (no RS junior can be convinced to stay because it is assumed they have their 4 yr degree).

Week 10: Sonoma State at UTEP

Bowl Eligible: Seawolves Manhandle Miners 56-28 for Sixth Straight Win

TE #44 snags his first of four TD catches| M. Franklin delivers a vicious hit to force a fumble

El Paso, TX -- The Miners proved to be no match for the overpowering Seawolves offense yesterday. The UTEP game plan of holding onto the ball didn't help much, as Sonoma often had a short field to work with.

Sonoma State was held to just 329 yards of total offense as UTEP dominated time of possession, holding the ball nearly twice as long as the visiting Seawolves. The result only left the Seawolves offense revamped each time they took the field. After trading touchdowns, the Miners seemed to lose all willpower once they trailed 21-7. UTEP would put up a score late in the second to trail 35-14, but Isaac Johnson managed to bring the ensuing kickoff back 96 yards for another Seawolves touchdown. The Seawolves were up 42-14 at the half.

For the sixth straight game, HB #33 reached 100 yards. The stat seems to be directly related to whether Sonoma State wins, however he was not the only star player. Brian Givens tossed a season high 5 touchdown passes while going 15/20. TE #44 set a new school record snagging 4 touchdown passes on the day.

The win was not without flaws. Brian Givens was sacked 3 times and hit 5 others. He also scrambled frequently to throw away passes. Defensively, the Seawolves could not stop the UTEP passing attack, giving up 396 yards and four touchdown passes.

"Our pass protection has struggled the last couple weeks, and so has our defense. We really need to step up these next few games. Our opposition is strong and we can't make mistakes." - Sonoma State HC Scott Wright

Sonoma State returns home next week to face UTSA, a team that crushed the Seawolves 62-35 in San Antonio last season. Sonoma State will have a strong home field advantage this time around, where they have won 8 in a row. The game is already sold out, and the school has kept added temporary bleachers in the mezzanine to accommodate more fans. A Win could set up a de facto division championship game against LTU the following week. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM local time, and the game is only available via radio broadcast.
