(2021) Week 7: #1 Sonoma State @ #5 Arizona
#1 Seawolves Overpower #5 Arizona Wildcats 52-23
SSU Dominates in convincing fashion for a road win By Geoff Bellevue, Football Beat Writer Posted October 10th, 2021 Freshman Dietrich Highland’s catch on 4th and 13 set up a TD, and gave SSU all the momentum Tucson, AZ - The Seawolves took full advantage of an opportunity to show the nation exactly why the are ranked #1 yesterday. In a battle of top 5 teams, the Seawolves took early control on the road and never looked back. The first quarter gave all appearances of a hotly contested battle. The Seawolves and Wildcats traded possessions back and forth, and it seemed the game would be a chess match. Arizona struck first with a 28 yard field goal, but the Seawolves responded. They pieced together a 10 play drive that spanned 79 yards, and capped it off with a 6 yard touchdown scramble by quarterback Brandon Jefferson. Arizona then caught a rare break. Running back Corey Gilliam broke free for a 73 yard touchdown run, and the Wildcats took a 10-7 lead into the second quarter. The turning point in the game came on the first play of the second quarter. Facing a 4th and 13 from the Arizona 43, head coach Scott Wright rolled the dice and decided to keep the offense on the field. Brandon Jefferson hit receiver Dietrich Highland on a deep ball that put Sonoma State at the Arizona 1 yard line. Benjamin Brant ran it into the endzone on the next play to take a 14-10 lead. The fourth down conversion seemed to take the wind out of the Wildcats sails. After a 3 and out, they allowed the Seawolves to march down the field again. This time the 6 play 59 yard drive was capped with a 2 yard touchdown pass to tight end Brent Keystone, giving the Seawolves the first two score lead of the day. Things went from bad to worse for Arizona, as quarterback Aaron Scott was picked off by Dee Foster on the very next play from scrimmage. Foster ran it back 43 yards for another Seawolves touchdown to make it 28-10. Benjamin Brant snagged another short touchdown run, and Arizona was able to add two field goal before the half. At the break, the score was 35-16. Arizona was the first to strike in the second half. The Wildcats pieced together a 9 play drive and Aaron Scott hit wideout Zach Simmons for a 13 yard touchdown. The Seawolves mounted a drive, but were forced into a field goal to make it 38-23. It appeared the Wildcats had a strong chance to get back into the game as they trailed by just two scored, but the Seawolves had other plans. Dee Foster snagged his second interception of the game to put a quick stop to the Arizona drive. Brandon Jefferson kept the momentum going by hitting receiver Ryan Newhall for a 7 yard touchdown, making the spreak 45-23. As the game moved into the 4th quarter, Arizona was hoping for a miracle. The Seawolves, however, made sure to crush all hope. Benjamin Brant shed tacklers on a stretch play and raced 55 yard into the endzone for another Seawolves touchdown. It would prove to be the final score, at the Seawolves walked away with a big 52-23 win. There was no doubt the Seawolves daring 4th down play was the turning point. Coach Wright knew it would play a monumental role in the outcome, but he thought it was necessary. “We were struggling a bit, on the road, already trailing. We needed something to take the crowd out of it, and I knew a conversion could put a dent in their defense’s confidence,” said Wright. “In the end, Brandon [Jefferson] showed a lot of trust in Dietrich [Highland] with a high risk throw, but I’m glad it worked out. If it went the other way, this game could have been much different.” Quick Notes -Dee Foster tallied 2 interceptions for the second week in a row -The Seawolves had a 300 yard passer and 100 yard passer for the second straight week -Both Maurice Godfrey and Brent Timmons recorded 2 sacks A Look Ahead The Seawolves return home next week to face the Kansas State Wildcats. The Wildcats have struggled through an up and down season, and have fallen out of the rankings, but are coming off a bye week. That could prove to be crucial as the Seawolves have a short week to recover. The game is scheduled for Thursday, October 14th with kickoff at 4:00 PM PST. The game will be broadcast regionally through Fox networks. (2021) Injury Update #1
Dietrich Highland Out For Kansas State Game
Highland and FS Ryan Parker expected to miss games with minor injuries By Ian Booking, Football Beat Writer Posted October 11th, 2021
Rohnert Park, CA - Sonoma State head coach Scott Wright announced today that two Seawolves would be sidelined for Thursday’s game against Kansas State. The toughest blow for the team will be the absence of star receiver Dietrich Highland, who went down late in the Arizona game. Highland limped off the field midway through the third quarter and never returned. Many fans held their breath as he walked gingerly back to the locker room. “Dietrich [Highland] got his foot a little screwy,” Wright told reporters today. “Luckily x-rays were negative, but he can’t move right. Given the short week, were going to need to keep him out for this one.” When asked if Highland would return for the Baylor game the following week, Wright seemed hesitant. “Time will tell. If he can’t plant on it, he can’t run routes. He will keep with rehab and see where were at as the week goes on.” Highland is the Seawolves leading receiver this year. Coming in as a five star recruit and preseason freshman All-American, Highland has snagged 35 passes for 492 yards with 4 TD’s in just five games. In his absence, Kyle Davis will move to wide receiver from the slot position. “Kyle can handle the load, I have full faith in him,” Wright said. Davis has 20 catches for 256 yards and 1 touchdown. Damien Myers, the star returner for the Seawolves, will move into the slot position to replace Davis. “We have a really good group of receivers, I don’t foresee it being an issue,” Wright concluded. The Seawolves will also be missing reserve free safety Ryan Parker. Parker, a special teams standout, went down awkwardly on a tackle and suffered an abdominal tear in the first quarter at Arizona. Luckily, Parker’s injury is also fairly minor. “The guy is a stud on kickoffs, so he will be missed,” said Wright. The Seawolves have enjoyed a fairly healthy season so far, with these being the first two injuries for Sonoma State. “We certainly have had good luck, football is a rough sport, you expect these things,” Wright said. “I just hope this isn’t the start of a trend,” he chuckled.

(2021) Recruiting Update #1
4 Star Running Back A.C. Sonora Commits to Sonoma State
Seawolves snag the #15 ranked running back in the recruiting class By Ian Booking, Football Beat Writer Posted October 12th, 2021 Rohnert Park, CA - The Seawolves got a major addition for the 2022 roster today, as running back Antonio Carlos “A.C.” Sonora gave them his verbal commitment. Sonora chose Sonoma State over USC and Washington, and several other PAC 12 and Mountain West programs. Ranked as the #15 running back in the class and a consensus 4 star prospect, the Seawolves targeted Sonora early. Sonoma State stands to lose their top three running backs to graduation, and will need to revamp the position. Sonora was clearly intrigued by the chance at early playing time, and an opportunity to start as a freshman. His tweet particularly mentioned that it was the deciding factor. A few weeks ago, Sonora narrowed his choices down to USC and Sonoma State. He was concerned about staying close to home, and many experts felt that would result in him committing to USC. In the end, however, it appears Sonora did not want to sit low on a depth chart. USC boasts a strong running back class, and reportedly wanted Sonora to redshirt. Sonora is from Torrance, California. As a junior at Torrance High School, he ran for 1578 yards on 239 carries (6.6 yards per carry) and 23 touchdowns. In his first six games this year, he has gone for 988 yards on 132 carries (7.5 yards per carry) and 18 touchdowns. He also has 12 receptions for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns. “A.C. [Sonora] is a complete back,” said coach Wright. “He’s got speed, agility, and strength. He’s solid as a runner and out of the backfield. We’re very excited to have him.” When asked about starting roles, Wright mentioned that Sonora has a shot. The Seawolves will have only freshmen at running back in 2022 as Sonora will join Alika Kalama and Brandon Cleveland. Kalama and Cleveland are currently redshirt freshmen. “We don’t promise anyone a starting spot, or any role, but I do look forward to him competing for the spot,” Wright said. Sonora is the first commit of the 2025 graduating class for Sonoma State. 4 star recruit A.C. Sonora announced his commitment to SSU via twitter today

(2021) Week 8 Game Preview
2021 Week 8 Game Preview Last Meeting: 2020 @ Kansas State Sonoma State 34 Kansas State 9 Injuries Sonoma State: WR Dietrich Highland (81 ovr)- Sprained foot, out 1-2 weeks FS Ryan Parker (82 ovr)- Abdominal tear, out 1-2 weeks Kansas State: WR Michael High (74 ovr)- Pulled groin, probable Summary The overwhelming opinion of critics is that this is a potential “trap game” for Sonoma State. The Seawolves come in at #1, and are facing a Kansas State team that has struggled with inconsistency. Kansas State will need a strong running game from their running back Prince Young (90 ovr). It may be tough against a strong Sonoma State defense, but the Seawolves did struggle against the run at Arizona. If Kansas State can get the ball moving, they may be able to compete and put up some points. Speedster wide receiver Ralph White (83 ovr, 96 speed) is a deep threat that could also keep them in the game. Quarterback Justin McDaniel (74 ovr) will need to control the ball, which has been difficult for him. He has thrown 13 interceptions in just 5 games and is facing a ballhawk. Seawolves safety Dee Foster (84 ovr) has four interceptions in just the last two games. The big struggle for Kansas State will be stopping the Seawolves offense. Despite missing Dietrich Highland, the Seawolves are still very strong at receiver. Ryan Newhall (92 ovr) and Kyle Davis (83 ovr) will be prime targets, and freshman Damien Myers (78 ovr) will find himself in the mix as well. Running back Benjamin Brant (87 ovr) could also have a good day, as the Kansas State defense is full of holes. In all, if the Seawolves come to play, it will be a blowout. They are coming off a short week, however, and Kansas State is coming off a bye week. The Wildcats will only have a shot if fatigue plays a factor. Expert Picks Kirk’s Pick - Sonoma State Rece’s Pick - Sonoma State Lee’s Pick - Sonoma State “Are you kidding me? I’m surprised they are even willing to broadcast this! (2021) Week 8: #1 Sonoma State Vs Kansas State
#1 Seawolves Rally Late, Defeat Kansas State 43-24
SSU fights fatigue and sloppy play in short week to come away with a win By Geoff Bellevue, Football Beat Writer Posted October 15th, 2021 MLB Howard Wyatt snags a pick six to break the game open late in the 3rd Rohnert Park, CA - Despite several setbacks and mistakes, the Seawolves were able to come away with another win at home. A short week due to a Thursday game clearly left the Seawolves fatigued and off their game, and for the first three quarters it looked like Kansas State had a chance at an upset. A late second half push allowed Sonoma State to run away with a big win. Things started off looking good for Sonoma State. Damien Myers took the opening kickoff back to the Kansas State 32 yard line. Six plays later, quarterback Brandon Jefferson hit Ryan Newhall for a 7 yard touchdown. They seemed poised for another touchdown, but Jefferson was sacked on back to back plays. The result was a 35 yard field goal from Dominic Hardin to take a 10-0 lead. Kansas State then mounted a drive that showed they meant business. Quarterback Justin McDaniel led them 75 yards down the field to silence the crowd. Running back Prince Young then capped it with a 7 yard touchdown to make it 10-7. Sonoma State was looking to pull away with their next drive. A 12 play 80 yard drive was capped with another Jefferson to Newhall touchdown connection, making it 17-7. Another drive was thwarted by a Kansas State sack, and Dominic Hardin hit his second field goal to make it 20-7. Kansas State jumped right back into the game though. McDaniel hit receiver Ralph White for a 78 yard touchdown on blown coverage. Suddenly, it was 20-14 nearing halftime. Sonoma State reached midfield, but Jefferson was sacked for the fifth time to end any hope of a last minute score. At the half, it was 20-14. Sonoma State needed a spark in the second half. They had a six point lead, but the Wildcats were on the move in Seawolves territory. Seawolves linebacker Jeff Johnson came up big with an interception to stop the drive, but the offense struggled. They moved slowly down the field until being stopped at the Kansas State 24. Dominic Hardin snagged his third field goal, this time from 41 yards out, to make it 23-14. The Wildcats then mounted another big drive. Receiver Danny Hall snagged a 52 yard gain to get into the red zone. The Seawolves defense made a goal line stand to force a short field goal, but it was 23-17 now. The Wildcats were sticking around, and within striking distance. Brandon Jefferson led yet another long drive, but they were shut down at the Kansas State 4 on 3rd and goal. Hardin hit yet another field goal to make it 26-17. With the third quarter winding down, the Seawolves were struggling to break away. They needed a big boost, and it came from their defense. On third down, linebacker Howard Wyatt jumped in front of a screen pass and ran it back just 13 yards for a Seawolves touchdown. The score gave Sonoma State their biggest lead of the game at 33-17 as the third quarter ended. The defense thrived on the momentum and forced a three-and-out on the following drive. That’s when the offense woke up. Jefferson was able to hit a wide open Kyle Davis on a 51 yard bomb, and it was quickly 40-17. The Seawolves walked away with a 43-24 win, and the crowd was able to breathe a sigh of relief. “I think the short week played a big role in our struggles,” said coach Wright. “Not to take anything away from K-State, they were a tough opponent, but I think we were far from 100% in this one.” The Seawolves definitely struggled on offense, converting under 50% of their 3rd downs. They gave up 5 sacks, and were unable to reach 100 rushing yards as a team. “They had the number on our running game for sure,” said Wright. “They shut that down. They got quite a few sacks too, luckily we put an end to that. They had something like 5 in the first half, but none in the second. That was key.” Quick Notes -Dominic Hardin had a career high 5 field goals -Brandon Jefferson had his second straight game with no interceptions -The Seawolves defense recorded their third straight game with multiple interceptions A Look Ahead Since this was a Thursday game, the Seawolves get a bit of an extended week to prepare for Baylor. Baylor will come to visit on Saturday, October 23rd. The Bears are 2-4, and have struggled throughout the season. Sonoma State will have several prospects visiting for the game, and hope to receive multiple commitments with the win. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM PST, and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports West. Photo Gallery QB Brandon Jefferson felt the heat, as he was sacked 5 times in the first half WR Ryan Newhall fearlessly goes over the middle for a TD catch Blown coverage allowed K-State WR Ralph White to break free for a 78 yard TD WR Damien Myers shined in his first start, snagging 7 catches for 87 yards WR Kyle Davis breaks free for a 51 yard TD Box Score
