Akron, OH --- Coach Gary Kelly got his first win as Akron head coach this afternoon. The Zips defeated UL-Lafayette 34-14 in their home opener. The win was spurred by a huge third quarter by the Akron defense. The Zips scored to go up 20-7, and on the next offensive play ULL threw a pick 6. The Ragin' Cajuns got the ball back and threw another pick on the first play of the series! Five plays later the Zips were in the end zone again and the score was 34-7. Coach Kelly was very proud of the way his team played, stating that this win could spur the Zips entire season.
"This was a big win. The team fed off the crowd and really came alive in the third quarter. That pick 6 changed this ball game," coach Kelly said. And he was right. As ULL walked back on to the field the team was noticeably shaken. "Back to back interceptions is incredibly tough to swallow as a quarterback. He wasn't the same after that. I'm proud of the way our defense played today," Kelly remarked.
Coming in to the game, the Zips were giving up 529 yards per contest, so holding the ULL offense to just 320 yards was a big deal. The offense ran the ball well, and Kyle Pohl protected the football and managed the game well. Next week Akron will travel to Bowling Green to take on the high powered Falcon offense.

Akron enters their first conference game as huge underdogs. The Bowling Green Falcons have one of the most high powered offenses in the nation and will look to exploit what has been a terrible Akron defense.
Bowling Green, OH --- The Akron Zips were handed their third loss of the season on Saturday. The Zips hung with heavily favored Bowling Green until the last second of the game when Tyler Tate hit a game winning 25 yard field goal. Most experts predicted that the Falcons would win this game by 20 points, so it is obvious that this Akron team is progressing under interim coach Gary Kelly.
"I was proud of the way we played today. Nobody gave us a shot, and that's a good football team that we hung with. I think we easily could've won this game, but we made a few mistakes in key moments. Giving up five touchdowns on the ground is tough to swallow," coach Kelly said after the game. Bowling Green QB Matt Johnson threw for over 350 yards, but never found the endzone on the day. All five of the Falcon's touchdowns came on the ground. It's tough to judge if the Akron defense was better this week than they were last. They gave up 612 yards of offense, but Bowling Green is one of the top offenses in the country. Next week is Akron enters a crucial matchup with the Ohio Bobcats. Another one that coach Kelly is calling a "must win" if the Zips wish to fulfill their season goal and get to a bowl game.
