Week 1 NFC West Recap and Previews NFC West Standings San Fransisco 49ers (1-0) Arizona Cardinals (1-0) Seattle Seahawks (1-0) St. Louis Rams (0-1) Rams 3 @ Seahawks 38 Bills 21 @ Cardinals 45 NFC Player of the Week Awards Offense Tony Romo (QB) of the Dallas Cowboys 34-49 406 Pass Yards 5 TD 1 INT Defense Ezekial Ansah (DE) of the Detroit Lions 6 Tackles, 3 sacks, 1 FF 49ers news Blaine Gabbert's starting job is safe for now despite tossing three interceptions in season opener. Quarterback cites opening jitters. Leash is expected to be tight. Anquan Boldin praised the play of his quarterback in post game press conferences, Boldin had a terrific afternoon in victory against Buccaneers What to Watch For! Week 2 @ Atlanta Falcons Matt Ryan hopes to lead the team through a much better performance in their second game, but the Falcons don't display much signs of hope for the upcoming matchup, unless of course the thrashing of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was an abberation. Ryan is a good quarterback and Julio Jones is a major threat, even more so than Mike Evans last season, but the big question mark is if this defense is ready to rise up. This wide receiving corp the 49ers brought out against the Buccaneers made Blaine Gabbert look pretty good (aside from his high interception totals). The Falcons have piled up 404 yards of offense in their contest last week with a lot of first downs (23) but they couldn't put the ball into the endzone and that will determine if they best the 49ers, red zone offense. Quarterback Matt Ryan has thrown for 271 yards with no touchdowns through the first game, his hope is change that latter mark with a few tosses on Sunday. Defensively, the Falcons were a mix bag. They got three sacks, but no turnovers and allowed 296 passing yards and 107 rush yards last week against the Broncos and Ryan Fitzpatrick. They will need to step up and put pressure on Blaine Gabbert if they hope to get into the win column.

Re: Gold for our community, Red for your blood - San Fransisco 49ers -
SF 3 0 0 14 6 23 ATL 0 7 3 7 0 17 Georgia Dome, Atlanta GA Improbable play powers the 49ers to overtime victory Just a week after a thrashing of a seemingly superior Buccaneers squad, the 49ers traveled out east to take on the Atlanta Falcons, and it appeared the Falcons had control of this one throughout, but a late collapse fueled by rookie John Gonzalez led this team to a victory. Even following the pulling of Blaine Gabbert, this team managed to secure a victory. Mason Crosby knotted in a first quarter field goal right down the center of the posts to make it a 3-0 lead. The lead would hold until the near end of the first half when Matt Ryan found Matthews in the seam for a short touchdown pass to make it 7-3 in favor of the home side. The Falcons would score yet again when late in the third quarter Greg Zuerlein knocked in a chip shot field goal after the Falcons were stopped on third and goal to make it a 3-10 lead that would give the Falcons more breathing room, but it wouldn't be enough. San Fransisco would tie the game before taking the lead on drives that were capped off by touchdown passes from John Gonzalez to DJ Barnes. Both passes were shorter passes, but the rookie wide receiver made his presence felt early, and late. The final giving the 49ers a 17-10 lead that would look to stand the test of time. That would change when Devonta Freeman rattled off a 49 yard rush that took them deep into the red zone and would set up Matthews for a five yard pass that would yield another touchdown for the duo and tie the game up with just sixteen seconds left, John Gonzalez would lob a pass downfield only for it to be intercepted. His lone interception of the contest and making it a 17-17 game that would head into overtime. The 49ers won the toss and preceded to slowly drive the ball downfield, the drive stalling once they hit midfield and would have to punt the ball off, with teams trading possessions before the Falcons got another big Devonta Freeman run to get them downfield. Suddenly back in action, the team rolled out all they could manage, and got inside the twenty, as the crowd roared. The 49ers looked beat. At least until the team oddly despite only needing a field goal, dropped back to throw and Matt Ryan would be strip sacked by Junior Gallette, Aaron Lynch scooped up the ball and charged downfield, with no one back, he would go untouched for the score for 81 yards and the game. An insane turn of events that had the 49ers go from defeat to victory in just a play. John Gonzalez had a solid debut after being injected into the game following the hook being applied to Blaine Gabbert. Gonzalez tossed a pair of touchdowns to just one interception in relief duty, while Gabbert had gone 9-19 for 94 yards and a pair of interceptions. Carlos Hyde passed the century mark yet again, for the second consecutive game, and he has been a tremendous boon to this offense thus far. Jarryd Hayne made use of his limited touches and John Gonzalez showed comfort in the read option to accentuate the ground game. DJ Barnes earned player of the game honors after reeling in 6 receptions for 72 yards and a pair of touchdown receptions and the lone offensive touchdowns for the 49ers.

Re: Gold for our community, Red for your blood - San Fransisco 49ers -
49ers and Bills battle for ball Bills pick up first victory by destroying 49ers in Gonzalez's first start In terms of forgettable first starts, this would rank chief among those and rumors have spread that the 49ers feel that Gonzalez isn't the best player for the slot after just one start. A shocking turn of events for a player that seemingly led his team to victory. "It's a learning experience for him, we didn't gameplan well and he made rookie mistakes. He has a tremendous head on his shoulders and he will learn the game. I still stand by our decision to pick him, but whenever you toss a rookie to the fire, you can expect some difficulties. We may look to free agency to encourage more of a battle among our quarterbacking corp or we may hold tight. We are 2-1, that much is true. We will evaluate what is best for us and our players." Spoke Jim Tomusula. The 49ers loss was a shock, coming in as a favorite against a winless Bills squad that looked ready to underachieve yet again. The Bills set the pace early. Scoring on their first drive, than scoring on the first three drives of the second quarter to jump out to a 28-3 lead. Tyrod Taylor did an excellent job of spreading the ball around and getting his team in positions to make plays, and that he did with an impressive line as he earned player of the game honors. The Bills would continue to add points to the scoreboard while the 49ers saw some life emerge from rookie DJ Barnes who added two touchdowns in the second half in order to get the team on the board and make the score not look as such a bombshell. Barnes has been a huge boost for this offense, while Anquan Boldin has largely struggled early on, Barnes has been a force for the 49ers making big plays. The defeat knocks the 49ers from the undefeated ranks with a 2-1 record. Many expected the 49ers to be 0-3 at this point, they are still in a good spot but a matchup against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals looms and should be a tough one for the 49ers who will need to work Boldin into the game more on the offensive end if they hope to keep the wins coming and to erase the memories of defeats such as this.

Re: Gold for our community, Red for your blood - San Fransisco 49ers -
John Gonzalez throws a late interception to seal the Niners fates Late interception caps off Cardinals rally The 49ers nearly moved into first, taking the lead late in the fourth quarter when Carlos Hyde stutter stepped behind the mass of lineman before him and lunged forward, leaping the pile and landing safely into the end zone for the score, the crowd erupting into a roar as the team rallied to claim a lead and what seemed like a victory. The Cardinals didn't struggle through the air, Carson Palmer tossed for 200 first half yards with a pair of touchdowns, but his production fell off in the second without a ground game to compliment him. Stepfan Taylor fell apart as time wore on and he showed his inexperience. Taylor isn't ready to be a three down back and the team was able to shut him down, despite him breaking a pair of early runs, he was ineffective through most of the game. Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown though, were making incredible catches all over the field resulting in touchdowns and long passes, Malcolm Floyd added one in the third that would set up a touchdown drive as well. Palmer went vertical and it worked as the receiving corp put the 49er's cornerbacks to pasture. It looked like however they wouldn't manage to come back and claim a big victory, but they did by moving the ball downfield quickly and leading to a fast touchdown in the final moments of the game. The ball would return to the 49ers who would end up tossing an interception on a lobbed pass that ended up being a lame duck. John Gonzalez has never been a deep downfield threat and that's something he will need to work on. The 49ers fall to 2-2 with a match against the Carolina Panthers coming up next week.

Re: Gold for our community, Red for your blood - San Fransisco 49ers -
Gonzalez shows frustration following one of his three interceptions Rookie mistakes send 49ers home with third straight loss The turnovers couldn't be overcome, the defense simply too potent and the 49ers fell for the third consecutive time. After starting 2-0 from the gates this team has sputtered in a major way, despite fighting the Cardinals admirably in divisional play, they couldn't even muster so much as a single punch against the Panthers. How bad was this game for the 49ers? Cam Newton only had to throw the ball 13 times. That's it. Jacquizz Rodgers ran the ball over 30 times, a good amount coming in time killing situations where the Panthers simply ran him up the middle repeatedly to burn the clock and ultimately net minimal yardage. The only miscue the team made was after forcing a turnover on downs, Jacquizz Rodgers was stripped, but that was with two minutes in the game to go, and the game already out of hand. This defense was simply unbelievable, forcing rookie John Gonzalez to constantly be flushed from the pocket or force bad passes, sacking him three times while adding about seven more quarterback hits on top of that. Things got dicey early when Josh Norman and Anquan Boldin were tangled up and the blood didn't cool, especially so when Junior Gallette left the game on a stretcher and was taken for X-Rays to determine if he had broken his collarbone. John Gonzalez left the game as well with an ankle sprain but returned, and his frustration was abundant. Sacks and turnovers took their toll. On the other side, the Panthers were opportunistic and were relentless, while their stats didn't look overly impressive on paper, the simple answer was this. 16 of their 23 points came off of turnovers, including a touchdown on an interception from just inside the goalline brought all the way back. The Panthers victory has them moving on the right track and they could be catching fire. This defense hasn't looked better and they will be getting Jonathan Stewart back. Where as this setback for the 49ers has them scrambling. John Gonzalez has shown raw talent but for this season they need a better option and the market isn't very wide open. It will be a long week as the team prepares for the underachieving Seattle Seahawks next week, and there are quite a few questions that remain for this team.
