Simon Dowling celebrates his first ever special teams touchdown

Special teams keeps 49ers afloat, but Eagles defense slam opposition

John Gonzalez would be sacked four times, throw five interceptions, albeit three coming on miracle plays where the ball was smacked in a manner of a volleyball and swooped in at the final moments by a swarming defense, and another on fourth and long to close out the final possession. The offense was just absolutely dominated.

Jointly, Darren McFadden looked more like Adrian Peterson than the journeyman backup halfback that he is, including breaking six tackles en route to a long touchdown run that secured the victory for the Eagles by extending the game late to double scores.

Geno Smith turned in a solid performance as well, throwing the ball just twenty times for a second consecutive game, but the NFL leading ground attack that the Eagles brought to the table spelled victory for the Eagles. Smith filled the role of game manager admirably, starting out poor but developing a good connection with Zach Ertz.

The special teams were the only touchdowns for the 49ers, with both returnmen Simon Dowling and Taven Graham scoring. It's the first two touchdowns from special teams this season, after the 49ers didn't have a single one last year. Graham's looked like an improbable comeback was on the books, but Darren McFadden broke off the huge run for the game winning score.

The 49ers fell to 1-1, their ground defense was demolished, they are clearly missing Navorro Bowman who is due to return within the next three weeks from his injury suffered in the preseason. Brandon LaFell debuted for 49ers and had his struggles, not proving to be a game changing option that the 49ers hoped they had with their top wideout, but with very little in game experience with the 49ers, expect some time before the connection is established.

Brandon LaFell wrestles for a touchdown reception in the 49ers victory

49ers roll over the helpless Redskins, Harper shows up big

In a battle of early season .500 squads, it was the 49ers that showed their class in a performance that will definitely be among their better in recent history. Once more John Gonzalez returned to form with a tremendous game against a poor Washington secondary, while Nahjee Harper had his biggest game thus far in his young career with just shy of 150 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Brandon LaFell finally had a bit of a breakthrough performance, proving himself to be the big red zone target that the team wanted when they signed him to be the top wideout and making big catches where size is needed, this 49er's receiving corp has a lot of athleticism but size is a bit of a premium and LaFell stepping up gives them a good target.

On the other end, Jimmy Garoppolo had struggled in this one, the ex-Patriot had a good season last year but is off to a mediocre start and he wasn't much above mediocre in this one, leaving for the final drive with a throwing shoulder injury which was determined to be minor.

Antonio Andrews didn't add much on the ground as the 49ers defense looked furious after their horrendous performance against the Eagles on the ground and absolutely punished the Redskins, giving diverse blitz calls that led to a sack and six tackles in the backfield.

A long touchdown to Jordan Reed made this one look like a better game, giving the Redskins a late touchdown that brought it to a 16-21 and without shooting distance of a rally, but the 49ers exploded, forcing an interception after a scoring drive and punching the ball right in immediately after.

Joined by the amount of clock control this team exerted due to the tremendous ground game in this one, as John Gonzalez even stepped up to add a few good runs of his own, was far too much for the Redskins to handle. Jackson Stumph delivered another huge performance and this tight end has been outperforming most expectations, filling the hole left by the Vance McDonald departure and than some. Hard to say if he would be the best pick from last years draft but thus far he has been the most productive!

The 49ers improve to 2-1 and move into possession of the NFC West lead as the lone 2-1. They take on the 1-2 Giants next week and their big challenge will be containing Odell Beckham Jr, or atleast minimizing the tremendous wideouts impact in the passing game, this is a big opportunity for a statement for this 49ers secondary and for the 49ers to keep trending towards a playoff birth if they can take another victory and improve to 3-1.

While his numbers aren't awe inspiring his play on the field has, responsible for several big blocks that allowed Nahjee Harper to break out in the last contest, while proving to be a reliable target in the passing game for John Gonzalez. Keep an eye on Stumph, if he continues to make plays, his name will be popping up a lot!

First matchup with Giants post-Manning era puts rookie on blast

After losing their Manning brother to retirement last off season, the Giants turned to journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick and what happened when they had to turn to Justyn Reeve? Their rookie quarterback who they hope to take the reins in the near future when Fitzpatrick retires or leaves?

The results weren't very good in the debut.

The 49ers forced Fitzpatrick from the game after he scrambled for a first down and suffered a brutal hit from Jimmy Ward that forced a fumble and led to a touchdown return. The second fumble by the quarterback, and second score for the defense, and he would be gone due to concussion protocol, he wouldn't pass and would be held back the rest of the game.

Justyn Reeves came in and struggled, and while some receivers did well, others struggled. Odell Beckham Jr was contained for most of the game except for a good pair of receptions in the third and an overthrown pass that would've been an easy touchdown for the wideout. Shutdown, despite the injury suffered by Malcolm Butler.

Butler had been shutting him down, and it continued throughout, but the rookies in the cornerback corp were exposed routinely and allowed big performances by the speedy receiving group that the Giants brought to the helm.

Malcolm Butler wasn't the only injury.

John Gonzalez took a punishing shot on a third and long when he threw the ball away, he remained on the ground and left on a stretcher, he officially had a torn groin and could miss up to two months.

Brian Hoyer was poor, completing a meager amount of passes and jointly the offense stalled beneath him, allowing the Giants a breath of life as the defense began to force the 49ers off the field and allow the Giants to churn away at the defense, leading to a late score that brought it close, but luckily enough Nahjee Harper would be able to ice out the clock by picking up three first downs.

The 49ers improved to 3-1 by outlasting the now 1-3 New York Giants. There are a lot of issues moving forward with two key players from each side of the ball now hurt, this defense will have it's hands full with an undefeated Cowboy squad next week.

There might be two more games left on their schedule but the 49ers won't be playing in front of the home crowd anymore. At the very least they gave the home fans something to go out on, a good victory over the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers held control through all four quarters and up until a late touchdown drive, the Dolphins looked to be going through the signals at best.

Undisciplined play plagued Jeff Fishers squad, as has been the big achilles heel for this Miami Dolphins squad. Making a few bad decisions, false starts, and a few misread breakdowns caused the Dolphins to quickly find themselves on the wrong side of a growing deficit.

"It's hurt us all season. We are going to have to work on it the rest of the way out and next year we will have to keep all of our pieces on the table and go for the victory. We are playing for our lives now and nobody is safe." Spoke a decisive Jeff Fisher. Fisher is in his first year as the Dolphins coach after being fired from the Rams this past offseason, and if the Dolphins wanted they could reboot yet again this offseason.

For the 49ers, the victory spells well for their next season. John Gonzalez played the role of a game manager admirably and while the 49ers hope that he can be a gamechanger at the quarterback position in the early part of his career as he feels out the opposition being a good game manager is a good first step, not costing your team wins is a big step in the right direction and the turnovers which Gonzalez has been committing at a high rate this season, but in this one against a defense which has been excellent at pressuring the quarterback, he held his own.

Getting sacked twice and hit just three more times, both sacks came in the first half, but after adjusting his cadence and making quicker reads, the quarterback came into his own and played a solid game, and while the Dolphins defense lived up to expectations, the mistakes were kept to a minimum and with their own defense actually putting the clamps on the Dolphins, they were able to get going in the right direction.

DJ Barnes was on the receiving end of the lone aerial touchdown of the afternoon while the wideout broke free of his corner and scattered for a quick touchdown. Barnes is in the running for rookie of the year and has been a tremendous surprise for the 49ers, who will have more flexibility with their receiving corp thanks to the outstanding play of the Florida alum.

Nick Fairley came into this game with just half a sack to his credit, after getting a big deal to come to the Bay, the expectations were much higher and with just 20 tackles and four for a loss, the first season for Fairley has been disappointing but he had two huge sacks, one to kill a drive that was picking up momentum and knocking the Dolphins out of field goal range, and the last coming on the final play of the game when Fairley slipped free and brought down Mykel Bethel-Thompson to end the game.

The 49ers improve to 6-8 but are eliminated from playoff contention. The 49ers take on the Washington Redskins (8-6) next week, the Redskins are in a three way tie for the NFC East lead, and will be fighting for their playoff lives, which could be difficult for the 49ers to best.
