In one of the season's most exciting games, the 49ers came back from deficits of 14-3 and 17-13 to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 27-20. With 35 seconds remaining in regulation, Blaine Gabbert found Titus Davis for his third touchdown pass of the day. A.J. Bouye made sure that the aforementioned pass would be the game-winner by picking off Matt Ryan's final desperation pass as time expired. The lone piece of bad news from Atlanta is that running back/return man Jarryd Hayne will miss the remainder of the regular season with a ruptured disk. It's likely, however, that he will be healthy for the playoffs, should the 49ers be fortunate enough to make it. It's possible that the nature of this exciting, high scoring affair reminded longtime 49er fans of this 2001 classic: http://www.pro-football-reference.co...0110140atl.htm

On Christmas Day, the 49ers hoped to give their fans the gift of a win and bright playoff hopes. Instead, the team left them with something worse than a lump of coal: an embarrassing loss to an average Buccaneers team. Former 49er Vernon Davis put the exclamation point on the defeat, scoring the touchdown that gave Tampa Bay a 30-7 lead late in the third quarter. The 49ers made many mistakes throughout the contest, turning the ball over five times and committing nine penalties. These penalties could not have been more impactful; three of them nullified potential 49er touchdowns. The 49ers face a tough challenge next week against the Jets in the Meadowlands: they must beat New York, AND Detroit must beat Chicago for the 49ers to make the playoffs as the NFC's second wildcard team. To make matters worse, they will need to find a way to win without Corey Lemonier and Aaron Lynch, their starting outside linebackers who have combined for 24 sacks on the season. Lemonier left the game with a broken thumb shortly after Lynch departed with a hip injury.

News: 49ers Sign Old Friend As LB Depth

Down two outside linebackers heading into their Week 17 contest against the New York Jets, the San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker Dan Skuta to provide depth at the position. Skuta previously spent time with San Francisco in 2013 and 2014. He will back-up ROLB Eli Harold and LOLB Lynden Trail, who will both be making their first career starts this sunday. To clear space on the roster, the 49ers released backup RT Demar Dotson.
