In the midst of USC and UCLA’s signing day success, the fellow Los Angeles based university Cal State Northridge inked its first recruiting class in over a decade.
Under the guidance of coach Dumont Moran, the Matadors will field its reinstated football team next season in the Big Sky Conference with the addition of 25-scholarship athletes, including two transfers.
“As a coach, I’m very pleased with our efforts on the recruiting trail,” Dumont said. “My assistants were relentless, and in many cases lured players away from larger, more established programs.”
Northridge signed all but one of its recruits from the southern and nearby desert region of California with an exception to nine JUCO’s who, however, attended high school in the area. The class shapes up with one three-star recruit, five two-stars, and 17 players listed as unranked, according to Scout.com.
In addition, Moran received word of a transfer from Cal Poly sophomore duo; defensive end Colin Dzubnar and tight end Jake Brito. Dzubnar redshirted his first year on campus and received only limited playing time last season while Brito wrapped up his freshman campaign on the depth chart at both tight end and fullback.
“While other teams practiced and played, we had a full staff out focusing entirely on bringing in talent, and I feel confident we did just that,” said Moran, who lost only two of 25 commitments on signing day.
Among CSUN’s decommitments were two-star center Brian Underwood who joined three-star defensive tackle Matt Davis with a decision to take the FBS route as the two committed to San Jose State and UNLV respectively.
Fellow defensive linemen Gabe Jackson flipped his verbal to UC Davis mid-season.
Moran mentioned Davis and Jackson’s decommitments specifically, citing their significance as the team was only able to add two members to the line with both being unranked ends.
On the flip side of the ball, the offensive line wound up being the team’s strongest suit with a total of eight players signed. Jamaal Whitney, a two-star guard, is the highest rated member of the unit, choosing the Matadors over Sacramento State and UC Davis.
“Almost everything revolves around what’s up front,” Moran said. “Obviously, we underachieved on the defensive side, but our offensive line is set and could develop into a solid personnel group.”
Northridge inked its first and only three-star signing of the 2014 class with wide receiver Da’Seaon Jameson. Jameson, ranked nationally at No. 1293, is listed 303 spots higher than CSUN’s next recruit, Jacque Hazzard, who places at No. 1596 and the nation’s No. 125th ranked running back.
Both players clocked official forty times of 4.48, good for second in the class behind only cornerback Beno Hoffman and wide receiver Marcus Horton’s tie at 4.46.
Notably, Horton joins defensive end Braxton Dawkins as the two CSUN signees that previously played under Coach Moran during his coaching tenure at Long Beach Poly. Both players signed with Mesa College following their three-year letter-winning careers at Poly.
Quarterback Jelani Gilchrist, defensive end Randall Carey, fullback Jared Weaver, halfback Tristan Malone, cornerback Antonio Thomas, offensive lineman Marcus Stribling and linebacker Spencer Lorusso are among recruits already enrolled on campus.
Asked about projected playing time, Moran said its fair game. "It’s going to be all about who comes out and puts forth the most effort,” he said. “We recruited multiple guys at positions so the battles are already set.”
There won’t be much, if any, grace period for this class to adjust to the college game.
CSUN opens the 2014 season against back-to-back and nearly-to back Pioneer League champions, San Diego. Just a week later the Matadors will meet with UCLA at the Rose Bowl. When conference play rolls around, first-year Northridge will be pitted against the strong Big Sky Conference, which sent three teams to the playoffs in 2012.
