New Recruiting Rules

For the most part, I'll be excluding "pipeline states" and instead using "pipeline regions". In a big state like California, it's very unlikely for an FCS school to have an option of hand picking talent across the state. So in my case, I'll be mostly sticking to recruits in the Southern Coastal Region.

I've also developed a simple spreadsheet to try and dictate how many points can go towards other regions.

Lol, I saw that last night but forgot to change it. Thanks for the comment though, it's been really fun building this team. Also good to see you back around!

Cal State Northridge coach Dumont Moran adds two staff members

Dumont Moran announces at a press conference his first staff members, including a brother.

CHIP BENJAMIN | TIMES STAFF WRITER

April 2, 2013

Dumont Moran continued putting his name on Cal State Northridge’s inaugural football program and coaching staff on Monday.

The recently hired head coach announced that he had named former CSUN football alum Marcus Brady as offense coordinator. Brady, holder of all CSUN’s passing records, was amongst the numerous head coaching candidates considered by Northridge prior to the hiring of Moran last month.

Brady, 34, spent three seasons coaching the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, serving first as a wide receivers coach before receiving a promotion to offensive coordinator last season. Prior to his coaching career, Brady played six seasons in the CFL, ending his career in Montreal.

How Moran and Brady will mesh on offense is questionable, as they bring to the table polar opposites of offensive schemes. Brady, who coached an Air Raid offense in Canada, will now be put in charge of stargazing behind Moran’s prolific option run offense.

Moran also hired his younger brother, Vernon, to coach the defensive line.

Vernon Moran, 38, inherited Dumont’s debut coaching job at Freemont High School following his hiring at the Long Beach Poly powerhosue. Vernon led Freemont for nine seasons, racking up two sectional titles and over 60 wins as head coach.

“I’m putting together a group of guys who I feel will stay grounded and committed to building a great program here,” Dumont Moran said in a statement. “Their experience, loyalty, and determination is something I believe all our future players will appreciate.”

The announcements marked Moran’s first major staff moves since he was hired as head coach of the reinstated program last month. Moran was previously a linebackers coach at California.

Moran, Cal State Northridge football staff embarks on recruiting

Cal State Northridge football coach Dumont Moran begins recruiting the school's first football class since 2000.

JIM ROGERS | TIMES STAFF WRITER

April 20, 2013

The clock has begun ticking for Coach Dumont Moran and the revived Cal State Northridge football team as the NCAA announced Tuesday permission for collegiate coaches to contact prep athletes for the first time since Signing Day.

Moran along with his staff – currently comprised of four assistants – will have until February 2014 to produce the school’s first recruiting class since 2000, many of the players who will be expected to start for the Matadors through their first season back in college football.

Moran, a product of the option offense and 4-2-5 defense, has placed filters on many of his potential targets in order for them to fit his athleticism tailored philosophies on both sides of the ball. Though CSUN will be the only California school to utilize the 4-2-5 defense, Moran will have to recruit against Tim Walsh and the already-established Cal Poly team to find its triple option-oriented players.

“We expect to engage in many recruiting battles this year,” Moran said. “As a recruit, getting the opportunity to start right off the bat is intriguing, but with a brand new team? It’s a daunting decision to make.

“Essentially, nobody really knows what our future holds. We could be a championship contender by year three, or we can be a conference cellar-dweller. Obviously we’re aiming for the first option, but it’s unknown at this time.”

Located just an hour out from Los Angeles, Moran owns the advantage of recruiting from the talented goldmines of southern California. Moran, already a longtime resident of the region, told the Times that he has already contacted several of his former players from his previous head coaching job at high school powerhouse Long Beach Poly.

“Simply put, when you have over 20 million people in (southern California), that’s where you should prioritize your recruiting,” Moran said. “We’ve probably got the best location to build a football team in the country.

“Don’t be too surprised in February if you see that almost our entire recruiting class comes from the Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino County.”

While Moran and his staff will be heavily involved around the SoCal region, the second-time head coach said he would soon hope to add other regions of California to CSUN’s pipeline.

Moran himself is a native of northern California (Oakland) along with his brother and assistant, Vernon, while defensive coordinator Derek Booker coached at several northern region schools including UC Davis.

Dianne F. Harrison named president at Cal State Northridge

Dianne F. Harrison, who will succeed Jolene Koester, speaks at her induction press conference on May 20, 2011.

VANESSA SIM | TIMES STAFF WRITER

May 21, 2013

Dianne F. Harrison, a veteran educator in Florida and California, has been named the new president of Cal State Northridge.

Harrison will succeed Jolene Koester, who retired in February after 12 years in the post. Northridge provost Harold Hellenbrand has been serving as interim president.

Since 2006, Harrison has been president of Cal State Monterey Bay, a campus of about 5,000 students located on the former Ft. Ord Army Base in Seaside. At Northridge, she will take the reins of one of the nation's largest public universities, with 34,000 students and a budget of more than $300 million.

The campus is the only public four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and is home to one of the newest teams of college football, a long-held dream for a campus that originally lost its program following 2001.

"I am excited and honored to be selected as president of another fine institution within the California State University system and look forward to working together with the entire campus community on the many opportunities for the future," Harrison said in a statement after Thursday's announcement.

Her selection caps a three-month search by the Board of Trustees during which Cal State leaders have faced scrutiny over executive pay and tuition increases, and as all 23 campuses have been forced to deal with reduced enrollment and fewer classes in the face of $750 million in state funding cuts.

If the state falls short on revenue, an additional $200 million could be cut next year. To deal with that possibility, the Cal State system will freeze most new admissions in spring 2013 and could turn away 25,000 students the following fall.

Harrison, 61, spent 30 years at Florida State University, serving in various capacities including faculty member, dean of social work and vice president for academic quality and external programs. She earned degrees in American studies and social work from the University of Alabama and holds a PhD in social work from Washington University in St. Louis.

Her research expertise includes HIV prevention among women and minorities and leadership in higher education.

"Dr. Harrison brings an outstanding portfolio of administrative experience, academic credential and student-focused approach to her new position as president of Cal State Northridge," said Trustee A. Robert Linscheid, who was chairman of the presidential search committee. "She has an impressive record of accomplishments, a commitment to scholarship and will provide strong leadership as the campus moves forward."

Harrison is expected to assume the post in June. Her salary will be set by the board at a future meeting. She earns a base salary of $270,315 at Monterey Bay, with housing provided. Koester made $295,000 at Northridge, also with housing provided.

Derek Booker named defensive coordinator at CSUN

UC Davis secondary coach Derek Booker talks to players on the sideline during a against North Dakota State last September.

JIM ROGERS | TIMES STAFF WRITER

June 4, 2013

Derek Booker will join the Cal State Northridge staff as a defensive coordinator, Coach Dumont Moran announced Wednesday.

Booker, 35, was a secondary coach for UC Davis this past college season, a position that he held for the past four years.

“We are very excited about welcoming Derek Booker to the Matador Family,” Moran said in a statement released by the school. “He really stuck out when searching for candidates, and we’re proud to have him on board.

“His knowledge of the game is second to none, and his players reflect with outstanding play on the field. He brings a conservative approach to the game and is always capable of adjusting on the move. I’m sure fans will enjoy his work as we prepare for our first season.”

Booker was a Cal Poly graduate assistant in 2001 before embarking on a career that included stints at California Baptist and Cal State Los Angeles. Concluding at UC Davis, Booker headed a secondary that tallied 11 interceptions and a fumble recovery for a total of three defensive scores in 2012.

The Apple Valley, Calif. native is the fourth coach to be hired under Moran, but is only the second to come in with coaching experience at the collegiate level.

Vernon Moran, Dumont Moran’s younger brother, was hired as defensive line coach, Marcus Brady as offensive coordinator and Tom Ellis as running backs coach. Ellis previously worked the same position at Murray State, while Vernon coached high school, and Brady in the Canadian Football League.

Moran has said he would have all or most of his staff in place by mid-October in anticipation of a recruiting push toward CSUN’s inaugural recruiting class.

Cal State Northridge to compete in Big Sky Conference in 2013

Big Sky Commissioner Doug Fullerton speaks about the renewal membership with its former affiliate, Cal State Northridge.

CHIP BENJAMIN | TIMES STAFF WRITER

September 9, 2013

The revival of Cal State Northridge football has gone from in-depth planning to bonafide reality as officials announced Tuesday the university’s renewed membership in the Big Sky Conference.

Formerly an affiliate from 1996-2000, CSUN was once again accepted into the conference as an associate football-only school.

“The Big Sky Conference is pleased to once again welcome California State Northridge University as a football member,” Big Sky Comissioner Doug Fullerton said. “Our members are excited about CSUN joining the League and its inclusion for the 2014 season.”

The Matadors will begin competing in 2014 where they will be eligible for the League’s championship and automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs upon entry.

The addition of CSUN, which will be playing its first season since 2001, will put the Big Sky to 12 Division I Football Championship Subdivision members in 2014 after adding three members in 2012.The Matador’s associate membership is for four years.

“This is another major step in the development of Cal State Northridge and the Department of Athletics,” CSUN Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto said. “We look forward to our football program revisting great traditions and rivalries in the Big Sky.”

Cal State Northridge formally added football on Feb. 1, 2013 and hired Dumont Moran as its first head football coach on March 3. Since that time, Moran has hired four assistant coaches and a director of football operations. Moran and his staff will sign their first recruiting class in February.

“We are very excited to come in and compete in the competitive Big Sky Conference,” Moran said. “This gives us an easy outlet to renewing our past rivalries while enabling our students and fans the opportunity to support us on the road.

“Our goal here is to build a competitive team as quickly as possible and begin contending for the Big Sky Conference championship and an FCS playoff berth.”

The Big Sky Conference is celebrating its 50th anniversary through 2013 and is coming off one of its most successful years. The Conference had three teams qualify for the FCS Playoffs in 2012, while four teams finished the season ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
