Buffalo, NY (AP) - The Buffalo Bills advanced to the AFC Divisional Playoff after pulling away for a 39-23 victory over the Houston Texans at Wegmans Field in the AFC Wild Card Game on Sunday afternoon. Tyrod Taylor threw for 323 yards amd three scores to lead the Bills to their first playoff win in 23 years.
Shaq Lawson celebrates a fourth quarter safety, tackling Brock Osweiler in the endzone to seal the victory. Houston (11-6) came out and attacked from the first play, as Brock Osweiler hooked up with Will Fuller on the game's first play for a 36 yard gain. Three plays later he found Fuller again, for a 12 yard score as the Texans went up 7-0 just 2:00 minutes in.
The Bills (11-6) wasted no time in responding. After a two yard loss on their first play, LeSean McCoy took a screen pass and ran untouched, 73 yards for the game tying touchdown.
Craig Nesbit would kick field goals of 42 and 45 yards for the Texans as they opened up a 13-7 lead midway through the second quarter on a cloudy, cold day in downtown Buffalo. Dan Carpenter would cap off an 11-play, 46 yard Bills drive with a 39 yard field goal of his own.
Late in the half, Kevin Johnson would make what looked like could be the play of the game. Sammy Watkins caught a pass from Tyrod Taylor, but was hit and fumbled. Johnson picked up the ball and ran it back 40 yards to put the Texans up 20-10, silencing the crowd.
Taylor would respond, as he led the Bills right down the field. He capped the 63-yard drive with a one yard keeper to pull the Bills to within 20-17 at the half. The five play drive took just 1:15 and really helped get the crowd back into it. It also gave the Bills some confidence, for a team that limped to a (2-4) record down the stretch.
Osweiler and Taylor had great first halves. Osweiler went 15 for 18 for 193 yards and a TD. Taylor was 12 for 16 for 190 yards, with a rushing and passing TD.
The Bills would grab the lead after halftime as they drove 78 yards in 13 plays, scoring on a beautiful 24 yard pass from Taylor to Robert Woods. They would extend the lead to 31-20 early in the fourth as Taylor threw his third touchdown pass on the afternoon. This one went to rookie tight end NaQuann Newell, who made a leaping grab in the end zone.
A third Craig Nesbit field goal cut the Bills lead to just one possession halfway through the fourth. After a big stop from the Texans defense, rookie punter Tomas Amaro pinned the Texans deep with a punt that sailed out of bounds at the two yard line. On the next offensive play, Shaq Lawson tackled Brock Osweiler in the end zone for a safety to put the Bills up by 10.
Dan Carpenter would add a couple of late field goals as the Bills advanced, winning their first playoff game since 1995, when they defeated Miami 37-22 at Rich Stadium in Don Shula's final game as coach of the Dolphins.
Taylor spread the ball around on Sunday. Charles Clay led the Bills with six catches for 84 yards. Sammy Watkins caught 5 for 75 yards, Robert Woods caught 4 for 37 and NaQuann Newell caught 4 for 32 yards. Rookie defensive end LeVeon Chavous was dominant, making seven tackles, recording 2.5 sacks and forcing a fumble.
The Bills will hit the road for the Divisional Round, heading to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars (11-5).
