PENN STATE PROFILE:
QB JAMES MADSEN
SR(RS); 6-2, 231 BALDWIN, PA

James Madsen knew expectations would be high.

His predecessor at quarterback at Penn State was the man who led them to a BCS Championship in 2031. Jason Cooper wasn’t just a player, he was a legend who also won a Rose Bowl in his final season (2032) and went 17-1 as a starter for the Nittany Lions will piling up video game numbers.

So you can understand the pressure on Madsen entering the 2033 season but a strange thing happened. Madsen got hurt in the season opening 31-3 win versus Auburn.

The back injury that Madsen suffered was supposed to keep him out six weeks but he wasn’t ready to play until the BCS Championship game versus Air Force. Madsen came off the bench, but it wasn’t enough as the Nittany Lions lost to the Falcons by a 25-15 margin.

Now in his senior season, Madsen is showing the potential that had the PSU coaching staff excited last season. Madsen has a powerful arm, can extend plays with his legs and has great awareness.

“The whole thing about James is just staying healthy and gaining confidence as the year progresses. He has the ability to lead us to all of our goals this year,” states PSU Head Coach KC Duane.

Penn State continued its winning ways with a 37-3 victory at home versus Maryland.

Rutgers saw a three game win streak snapped at Michigan, losing 31-21 to the Wolverines.

Coach KC Duane has a four game win streak against Rutgers and is 8-2 lifetime while at PSU.

Rutgers still lays claim to the worst loss of KC Duane’s tenure at Penn State. The Scarlet Knights destroyed the Nittany Lions 63-7 at High Points Solution Stadium on November 2, 2024.

Duane and the Nittany Lions did exact some revenge on November 1, 2031 when they beat the Scarlet Knights 37-3 at Beaver Stadium. The win marked the 150th of Duane’s career.

Penn State CB Ben Taylor evades a diving tackle attempt by Rutgers G Mike Stewart on his way to the end zone late in the fourth quarter. Taylor's 27 yard interception return was the final TD on the day as the Nittany Lions walked away with a 53-21 win.

PSU RAMBLES OVER RUTGERS 53-21
Press Clippings from Coach Duane's post-game presser...

On the sluggish performance of the offence in the first half…
“The D was giving us great field position but we couldn’t get anything going – having to settle for three field goals. Then they score to make it 9-7, we go tempo and put in the end zone in 43 seconds with Terrance Hairston making that 23 yard catch. It was a bizarre turn of events but our offence got going after that.”

On the defence’s Jekyll and Hyde act in the first half…
“Between the way our offence played and our defence…man something was in the air today. How do you explain our defence giving them NOTHING all the way up until the last four minutes of the half? Then two long drives for touchdowns were it looked like Rutgers was going against air. Like I said, it was a strange half.”

On the second half in which PSU outscored Rutgers 34-7…
“19-14 out of the half and then we get the fumble on the punt return and turn that into three and then we get another fumble and turn that into seven to make it 29-14. That was a backbreaker for them. We had more consistency on both sides of the ball. We got both sides going at the same time – something we didn’t do in the first half – and the results great. Big plays too. Reid had a great 22 yard run and Taylor with his pick six – the guy is a player.”

On CB Ben Taylor’s 27 yard interception return for a touchdown…
“Look, we had to take him out of the certain packages because we got Jon Jackson and Reggie Gray back from injury, but then we put him in with the two’s late in the game and he makes that play. Sitting in the zone, he reads the hook pattern, jumps it and takes it to the house. Somehow, someway, we have to get this guy on the field.”

On K Tra Parker, who was 5 for 6 on field goal attempts…
“Tra is an All-American for a reason. He’s got a powerful leg and he just keeps getting more accurate. He’s 19 for 22 on the season now with the only misses coming from 40 yards and out. He’s a money kicker who has won us games and we have full confidence in him.”

PENN STATE PROFILE:
DE OTIS MAYO
SO; 6-3, 264 MEDINA, OH

Coming out of high school in Medina, Ohio, Otis Mayo was a highly sought after four star recruit.

Given the fact he was from Ohio, most people assumed that he would commit to becoming a Buckeye but they assumed wrong.

Otis Mayo loved a team but it wasn’t Ohio State – it was Penn State – and it was a love that was forged by his dad Jake.

Jake was a decent player coming out of North Hills High School in Pittsburgh, but never played at the next level. One of Jake’s high school teammates however did wind up playing at Penn State – Lavar Arrington. Jake watched from afar as his former teammate succeeded at the collegiate and pro levels.
Jake’s love for Penn State football was passed onto his son Otis, who committed to PSU despite being heavily recruited by several teams.

Now Otis is looking to establish a name for himself as a Nittany Lion legend.

Midway through his sophomore season the young man wearing #4 has already recorded five sacks and is quickly becoming a presence on the Nittany Lions defence.

And he was just named the B10 POW for Week 9 for his efforts in the 53-21 win at Rutgers. Mayo earned the honors with four tackles, three TFL’s, two sacks and two forced fumbles.

WEEK 10 PREVIEW

Matchup Preview *|* October 28, 2034
@
Northwestern Wildcats
(1-6 (0-4), Away)
#2 Penn State Nittany Lions
(7-0 (4-0), Home)
Game Notes

Penn State rolled over Rutgers 53-21 to extend their record to (7-0; 4-0).
Northwestern’s losing streak reached five games after dropping a 28-16 decision at Iowa.

Coach KC Duane is 7-3 lifetime against Northwestern while at PSU with perhaps the most memorable game of the series being the Nov. 9, 2030 matchup which saw the Wildcats win 47-44 in a crazy finish.

PSU had scored a touchdown with 37 seconds remaining to tie the game at 44. The major culminated a second half PSU rally in which they came back from a 21 point deficit only to see Northwestern get the ball back and move it to the PSU 40 yard line - then hit a 57-yard field goal to win as time expired.
