Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty

Uglier Than It Looked
Written by Alex Flight on August 29th, 2013

Wake Forest started their 2013 football season by blowing out Presbyterian today, but the rest was definitely visible.

The Demon Deacons won the coin toss and deferred, delaying the long anticipated debut of Quinn Morris' offense. Presbyterian would pick up a quick first down, but be stopped on their next three plays being forced to punt. Wake Forest would follow suit and punt before forcing a three and out.

Facing a 3rd and 13 it looked like Wake Forest would punt once again, an underwhelming start for sure. Josh Harris had other plans as he would catch a pass in the flat, bounce off a defender, and pick up the first down. The offense started to click, but WR turned TE Matt James dropped a pass on 3rd and 7, a common occurrence this game. Chad Hedlund would shank the 45 yard FG attempt.

After the defense forced another punt, the offense found its rhythm. Orville Reynolds caught a drag route--juked the socks off of a defender--and picked up 35 yards. On the next play Josh Harris took a handoff on a draw play, broke a tackle and walked into the end zone for a 1 yard TD, the first points of the season.

The 2nd quarter was not ideal for Tanner Price. On the first three drives, he threw three interceptions. The first one was by linebacker Brent Carter in the end zone on a phenomenal play where he was forced to lay out for. As soon as Price got the ball back, he was visibly shaken and threw a pass directly to Joe Richwalski--Presbyterians strong safety. The next drive looked a little better, but Price hung the ball up for too long and free safety Barrett Alford jumped the route and would actually take it all the way back for a pick six. The extra point was missed.

After these drives, Price looked much better. He would put together a last minute drive, getting down to the 3 yard line with just a few seconds left. Hedlund would nail the field goal and the Demon Deacons were looking shaky and only up 10-6 at halftime.

After receiving the second half kickoff the Demon Deacons put together a great drive, and capped it off with a 20 yard TD pass to Reynolds on a drag route. On the next drive, third string TE Daniel Vogelsang bowled over a defender and dragged a few more on his way to a 54 yard gain. Later in the drive he dropped a pass that would have been a walk in TD, and Wake Forest was forced to settle for a 36 yard field goal. James Ward would quickly recover a fumble in the end zone. The next two drives were very similar, both were short field TDs with big chunk plays and a TD on the second play of the drive. A 4 yard TD to Matt James on an out route and a 2 yard TD run by Josh Harris.

Harris would get his third touchdown of the day on a 4 yard run halfway through the 4th quarter, and Wake Forest would chew the rest of the clock, capping a 48-6 win highlighted by a 31 point third quarter.

The first look at Morris' offense looked promising. He seemed to employ an Air Raid style offense, but with a heavy focus on his tight ends. There seemed to be 2 tight ends on the field almost every snap, and there were quite a few 3 tight end sets. Tanner Price's 3 interception 2nd quarter was a scary sight, but he bounced back later. Seven drops on the day also seemed to be another reason for concern. Coaches were unavailable for comment after the game.

Wake Forest will travel to Boston College for a Friday night game that will be their first true test.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty

Dropping the Ball
Written by Alex Flight on September 6th, 2013

If Friday night was any indication of the season to come, it doesn't look like much has changed for Wake Forest.

Once again winning the toss and deferring, Wake Forest would force a punt on their first drive, extending their defensive shutout streak. Tanner Price would drive the team down to the 20 yard line, but the drive would stall due to drops and they would settle for a Chad Hedlund 37 yard field goal.

The lead would not hold long. Boston College's Andre Williams would break a long TD run, stiff arming Teddy Matthews--who was filling in for the injured Mike Olson--on his way to pay dirt. In one of only a handful of incompletions on the day that was not a drop, Tanner Price would overthrow Michael Campanaro on 3rd and 4, leading to a three and out.

The two teams would trade punts on the next two drives. Boston College would hen string together a drive and Chase Rettig would hit Bobby Swighart for a 14 yard touchdown on a corner pattern. With six drops halfway through the second quarter, Wake Forest was struggling to move the ball, and would punt once again. The defense had their back, and would stifle Boston College on the next drive.

The offense seemed to finally put their issues behind them, putting together a drive inside the 5 yard line. And then the drops resurfaced. Two in the end zone by Michael Campanaro would lead to a 3rd and goal from the 1 yard line. Neglecting the run, Quinn Morris would call another pass and Tanner Price was hit as he threw. Hedlund would hit the 18 yard field goal attempt.

Only down one score with time ticking in the half, things looked promising for Wake Forest despite a poor first half. That faded quickly as Spiffy Evans would split the safeties on a seam route, and would score a 36 yard touchdown as time expired. A horrific blunder that shifted the momentum completely.

More drops on the first drive of the second half led to another Wake Forest punt. Boston College jumped at the opportunity, and Chase Rettig launched a bomb to Dan Crimmins for a 78 yard touchdown. Trailing 28-6, Wake Forest needed to turn things around and quickly.

A drop on 3rd down would lead to another punt. The defense would step up massively and force 4 straight Boston College punts. Unfortunately, the drops would not stop, and they always seemed to come on 3rd down. 4 more times in the second half, a receiver dropped a pass on 3rd down, leading to a stalled drive and a punt.

Boston College would finally string a drive together, but settle for a 32 yard field goal. Tanner Price, who was visibly upset at this point, tried to force a pass in, and would get baited by Boston College linebacker Steele Divitto who would return it for a 20 yard TD. Finally stringing together a drive, a poor route by receiver Jared Crump led to a Ted Davenport interception on the one yard line. The defense would force another punt.

Seemingly determined to score at least one touchdown on the day, Wake Forest employed a no huddle offense with time running out. Down 38-6, the game was over but a touchdown would be a moral victory on the day. They would accomplish just that, and Campanaro would score an 8 yard touchdown on a slant with 12 seconds left. Boston College would kneel out the clock and clinch the 38-13 victory.

As I'm sure you picked up on, there was one key issue on the day. Drops. There were 18 on the day, and only two players who were targeted--4th string TE Anthony Rook and RB DeAndre Martin--did not drop a pass.

"I'm going to take responsibility for this," said Quinn Morris after the game. "Our focus in practice has been what happens after the catch, we want guys to break tackles. Unfortunately, this has meant sacrificing the catch itself. We're going to change that."

Tanner Price was seen screaming at his receivers on the sideline throughout the game, and ignored reporters after the game. He had a poor box score game, recording a 36% completion percentage and a 75.4 passer rating. He had no help on the day, as he was harassed all game, being sacked 5 times, and the aforementioned 18 drops. He also threw 2 interceptions.

Star senior receiver Michael Campanaro--who has been held in check through the first two weeks--had 3 drops on the day. "I'm really disappointed in myself," he said in his post game presser, "I pride myself on my hands. If I was being hit as I caught it, it might not be so bad. But they were wide open passes, and it cost us a chance at a victory." Many players seemed to share the same sentiment.

Wake Forest returns to Winston-Salem next week, and will host Louisiana Monroe next weekend. The Warhawks were shutout last week @ #10 Oklahoma, and will play Grambling State tomorrow. ULM is led by senior quarterback Kolton Browning, who is coming off a terrific junior season. He threw for more than 3000 yards, 29 touchdowns, and led the Warhawks to the first bowl game in school history. After a rough start to the season, he should be looking for redemption against the Demon Deacons defense.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty

Historic Heartbreaker
Written by Alex Flight on September 14th, 2013

Records and hearts were broken today in Winston-Salem, as Wake Forest would fall 49-48 to Louisiana Monroe, just increasing the difficulty in their goal of reaching a bowl game.

Heading into the season, this looked like one of six winnable games for the Demon Deacons. After the first few drives, it looked as if this was true. Michael Campanaro would score a touchdown on a 5 yard out route on the first drive of the game. A quick three and out was forced by the defense, and after another drive the Demon Deacons would once again score from 5 yards out. This time it was on a Tanner Price scramble, in what was his first non sack rush attempt of the season.

Louisiana Monroe would put together a drive of their own, scoring on a 3 yard touchdown run by Jyruss Edwards. The teams would trade punts before Josh Harris made a phenomenal cut and outran the defense for a 56 yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive. Another stop by the defense and it looked like Wake Forest could put the game away early. However, Jonathan Williams would led an out route go right off his hands and Vincent Eddie was right there to capitalize. With a short field ULM would score on a 6 yard pass from Kolton Browning to Kenzee Jackson.

On the next drive, Josh Harris would get caught from behind on a sweep a yard short of the first down marker. The Demon Deacons would punt the ball right back and after another drive Kolton Browning found Jyruss Edwards for a 9 yard touchdown to tie the game. After taking back to back sacks, Wake Forest would punt from inside the 5 yard line. Once again Browning would lead a drive and this time found Tavarese Maye in the end zone to take a 6 point lead, as the PAT was missed. This seemed like it could be a big factor in the game, and as it turned out it was.

Trying to score quickly, Tanner Price forced a pass and Michael Johnson intercepted it, and the score at halftime would stay 27-21 Warhawks.

Browning wasted no time, throwing his 4th touchdown of the day, a 72 yarder to Je’ron Hamm. Merrill Noel fell down on the man blitz and it was a walk in touchdown. Although it seemed they had surrendered all momentum at the end of the half, Wake Forest wouldn’t go down without a fight. Joshua Wilhite would drag a defender into the end zone for a 7 yard TD after catching a pass in the flat to cap off a long drive.

The defense would string together a stop for the first time in several drives, as Nikita Whitlock stood up Jyruss Edwards on a 3rd and 1. Price was not going to throw away this opportunity and found Orville Reynolds on a slant for an 11 yard touchdown. Louisiana Monroe must have learned from their mistake and they were unstoppable on the last drive of the third quarter. Browning completed pass after pass for big gains, capping it with a 7 yard pass for Je’ron Hamm’s second touchdown of the day. ULM coach Todd Monroe saw his opportunity to recover that point lost earlier, and the Warhawks converted the 2 point conversion.

Down 42-35 entering the 4th quarter, this was a big drive for Wake Forest. Quinn Morris could sense it and he broke out a trick play the led to WR Orville Reynolds scoring a 10 yard rushing touchdown. With stops a rarity, the Wake Forest defense came up big, and Whitlock would sack Browning on 3rd down forcing a punt.

Having the momentum at this point, things looked promising. Morris called his go to bubble screen, but Trey Caldwell was ready and jumped it for a pick six. Down 49-42 with under 4 minutes remaining, Wake Forest needed big plays fast. Josh Harris would juke a defender to convert a crucial 3rd down. Later in the drive, Tanner Price would scramble and run out of bounds at the 1 yard line. The next play he would find Michael Campanaro on a slant pattern.

49-49 with two minutes left...or at least that’s what the scoreboard said before the television crew had to fix their mistake. Chad Hedlund would shank the most crucial PAT of the game, and Wake Forest now needed the ball back.

They would get the stops, burning all their timeouts, and force a 4th and 16. They got the ball back at the 10 yard line with 64 seconds left. Tanner Price, who finished with the 5th highest single game passing total in school history, had suffered a concussion on the last touchdown throw, and so the game was on redshirt junior Patrick Thompson’s shoulders.

After a dropped pass by Jared Crump, Thompson would complete two quick passes to Josh Harris and Campanaro, the latter getting a first down and getting out of bounds. After Matt James was tackled out of bounds, Jonathan Williams would catch an out route past the marker and get out of bounds to stop the clock.

With 17 seconds left, the Demon Deacons were still on the wrong side of the 50. Having to get yards quick, Thompson tried to anticipate an option route by Matt James before he broke. He expected a dig route, but James ran the post instead. Safety Isaiah Newsome would be there to seal the game with an interception.

A one point loss always hurts, but Matt James and Chad Hedlund were extremely distraught after the game. “It’s my fault,” Hedlund said as he was fighting back tears, “20 yards. That’s all we needed and I shanked it. Alexander [Kinal] had the laces perfect, the snap was perfect, everything was perfect. There is no possible excuse for this.”

Head Coach Jim Grobe had a different train of thought. “It’s a team sport. One guy doesn’t win the game, and one guy doesn’t lose the game. We all could’ve done better, and ultimately we had some bad luck at the end there. But we shouldn’t have been in the situation anyways,” he said after the game. He also said he was disappointed in the defense after playing well the last two weeks.

Overall, the Demon Deacons seemed to improve on their issues last week, but it wasn’t enough in the end. Receivers only dropped six passes on the day, in comparison to eighteen last week. “I liked the performance today,” offensive coordinator Quinn Morris said after the game, “but I didn’t love it. We still dropped six passes too many, and if we catch those passes we probably win. We’re turning the ball over way too much also.” Tanner Price has thrown 8 interceptions through 3 games, and Patrick Thompson has another. Morris said that would be an area of focus going forward.

The Demon Deacons travel to West Point next week to play the Army Black Knights. Wake Forest has been extremely good against the run so far this season, so they should be favored to come out with the victory. However, the triple option is not a regular run scheme, so there are no guarantees. The game will be a challenge, and it could be harder if Tanner Price has not recovered from his concussion.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty

That's all I have for updates tonight. I might have the week 4 preview up tomorrow at some point, but I'm not sure yet. Also if you have any tips or anything you'd like to see for write ups and previews, please let me know. A main purpose of this is to improve my journalistic writing.

Also, I'll focus more nationally once we get towards the middle of the season, but even then it won't be weekly. I feel like posting Top 25, Heisman Watch, Stat Leaders, etc. is pointless right now since it will change so much and it's pre programmed.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty

Quarterback Controversy?
Written by Alex Flight on September 21st, 2013

Backup quarterback Patrick Thompson silenced doubters on Saturday, and may have earned a chance to take the starting position.

When star QB Tanner Price was officially ruled out on Friday afternoon with a concussion, there was a wave of pessimism from Wake Forest fans. As the rain fell hard in Michie Stadium, it became even more likely the passing game would struggle all day.

The coaches must've thought the same thing, and after three straight runs Wake Forest would punt. Fullback DeAndre Martin was stood up at the marker on the 3rd and 1 dive attempt. Army would also keep the ball on the ground, putting together a long drive. However, it would stall out at the 39 yard line and HC Rich Ellerson would decide to punt.

On his first pass of the game, Thompson found TE Matt James for a 21 yard gain. This was the start of what would be an impressive drive, and it was capped off by a Michael Campanaro TD on a 12 yard corner route. The defense would force a 3 and out, and Thompson would put together another long drive. This time, however, he was forced to throw the ball away on 3rd down as the Demon Deacons would settle for a 43 yard field goal.

After a missed 40 yard field goal by Army kicker Daniel Grochowski, Wake Forest would drive down to the red zone. Thompson would miss twice down here, an overthrow of Campanaro on first down, and a miss on Orville Reynolds on third down. They would settle for their second field goal of the 2nd quarter. 2 long passes put Army in scoring position, but Teddy Matthews would jump an Angel Santiago pass for his first INT of the season. Attempting to score quickly, Thompson would just throw the ball up for James where only he could come down with it. However, it would sail through the back of the end zone and Wake would punt. 3 straight long passes followed by timeouts set Army up for a 46 yard field goal as time expired, but it would go wide right and the score remained 13-0 Demon Deacons.

Army would start the half by getting down to midfield, but would be forced to punt. Wake Forest would keep the ball on the ground for most of the ensuing drive before launching a play action pass to James for a 35 yard gain, getting the ball inside the 10 yard line. 4th string TE Anthony Rook would score on a curl on the next play. Army would keep the ball on the ground every play of their next drive, but had to settle for a 40 yard field goal to break the shutout. Wake Forest would go three and out.

After 3 straight incompletions, Army would go for it on 4th down but AJ Schurr's receiver was tackled short of the marker giving Wake Forest a short field. Senior WR Michael Campanaro would capitalize by scoring on a 12 yard out route a few plays later. Again, Army would be stopped on 4 straight plays . Backup TE Spencer Bishop would get the offense all the way down to the 1 yard line on the first play, but Jonathan Williams was tackled for a 4 yard loss on the next play. This was no issue as Matt James would score on a 5 yard hitch route to give Wake Forest a 31 point lead.

With the defense playing back, preventing any big plays, Army would put together a long drive and eventually found the end zone on a 6 yard TD pass from AJ Schurr to Ejay Tucker. After losing 6 yards on the first two runs of the ensuing drive, Patrick Thompson dropped back on a play action pass and tried to force a pass to his receiver. Chris Carnegie would jump the route with 18 seconds left. The clock would run out before Army could put anything together.

Besides the late interception on what was a questionable play call, as well as a questionable read, Patrick Thompson looked great. He would finish the day with almost 300 yards and 4 touchdowns. "I'll take the blame for that interception, we should've never thrown it," said offensive coordinator Quinn Morris after the game, "Other than that Pat was perfect. But no, this doesn't open up a QB battle. Tanner [Price] is our guy." Price has not looked great to start the season, but he is one of the all time leading passers in Demon Deacon history. "It's at least nice to know what we have in Patrick," said head coach Jim Grobe in his post game press conference.

The defense also looked impressive, holding Army's strong run game to under 4 yards a carry. This also allowed Wake Forest to play a little more conservative on the day, as both Morris and Grobe have said they wanted to cut down on turnovers after the first 3 games.

Price should return next week, along with inside linebacker Mike Olson, as Wake Forest travels to Death Valley to play a top 10 opponent in Clemson. They will be large underdogs, but this will be an opportunity to see how the team holds up to a superior opponent.
