The Dallas Cowboys have signed QB Tyrod Taylor to helm the team as it navigates the first half of the season without franchise star Dak Prescott, who has a torn groin. Taylor has more experience than backup Cooper Rush, and for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations, Taylor makes for a good stopgap.

Surprised Dallas cut Taco and Gregory, but they probably needed the cap to sign Tyrod -- Dallas should be on the struggle bus for the first part of the season.

SAINTS DOWN TEXANS 34-21 ON MONDAY NIGHT DEBUT

New Orleans - The Saints defeated The Texans 34-21 in the 2019 season opener on Monday Night Football. Despite losing RB Alvin Kamara early in the game and a relatively quiet game from Michael Thomas, the Saints, led by Drew Brees was able to navigate the field on a mismatched Texans defense.

"We have to get better defensively, and fast." Head Coach Bill O'Brien said, after giving up 158 all purpose yards to backup RB Latavius Murray.

The Saints, who were missing S Von Bell (who has been put on IR) and DE Marcus Davenport (expected to miss a month), gave up 301 passing yards to Deshaun Watson.

However, the Texans only had 70 rushing yards, 41 on which came from Deshaun Watson.

"(We)Have to do a better job setting up the run, and that's on me." O'Brien said after Texans RB's had a combined 11 attempts in the game.

D'Onta Foreman led all back with 5 attempts, ended the game with -4 yards rushing. New addition Devonta Freeman had 20 yards on 4 attempts. Lamar Miller had 13 yards on 2 attempts, but accounted for 2 costly fumbles.

DeAndre Hopkins (6/106/2 TDs) and Austin Seferian Jenkins (6/73/1 TD) led all Texans WR's.

With Keke Coutee sitting out, DeAndre Carter filled in the slot, and had a 3/69 night. Will Fuller ended the night with a stat line of 3/34.

The passing game looked promising with Deshaun Watson looking sharp and concise with his reads, but the team needs to figure out a way to take some pressure off it's young QB with a consistent rushing attack.

Defensively, the team was able to hold Michael Thomas to only 3 receptions (1 of which was a TD) but couldn't make crucial stops. TE Jared Cook ate up the LBs with an 8 catch night.

JJ Watt was held off the stat sheet for one of the only times in his stellar career.

Save for a garbage time sack by newly acquired DT Poona Ford, the team couldn't get past a stellar Saints OL and rarely ever was in Drew Brees face.

On the other side of the coin, the Saints managed to sack Deshaun Watson 3 times, with Cameron Jordan bringing down the QB twice.

Next week the Texans open up their home slate of games against a tough divisional rival in Jacksonville.

CHARGERS TRADE VIRGIL GREEN TO SAINTS

New Orleans - In a rather surprising move, the Saints have acquired TE Virgil Green from the San Diego Chargers. Green will combine with Jared Cook, who led the Saints in receiving in a Week 1 victory over the Texans, to form a formidable TE duo and adds another threat for QB Drew Brees.

Green, who apparently fell out of favor in San Diego, was dealt for New Orleans 4th, 5th, and 6th round picks in the 2020 draft.

TEXANS BOLSTER DEFENSE; SIGN DE MARIO ADDISON

Houston - A day after being waived by the Carolina Panthers, the Houston Texans have signed DE Mario Addison to help bolster it's defensive line.

Addison, out of Troy, has 45.5 career sacks. Over the past 3 seasons with the Panthers, he has averaged almost 10 sacks a year.

"High motor guy. He brings an undeniable energy." said Head Coach Bill O'Brien, who also said they plan to play him on passing downs.

The Texans waived DE Joel Heath in a corresponding move.

Yeah, Addison! Dude's an underrated pass rusher, he should thrive playing in a defense with JJ Watt -- he's gonna eat.

Tough loss against the Saints, but NO does that consistently to many teams, no time to panic yet.

Yeah, I figure if I can at least have a winning record in the division and win a few of the others, I have a good shot at a wildcard at least.

When I saw Carolina waive Addison, I had to pounce lol.

TEXANS DOWN JAGUARS 24-10

Houston - In their home opener, the Houston Texans defeated division rival Jacksonville Jaguars.

QB Deshaun Watson threw for 3 TDs for the second consecutive game, and ended the day 20-24. However, 2 of his for misses were intercepted by Jalen Ramsey and Ronnie Harrison, respectively.

Despite the huge win, Watson was not happy with his play.

"Any time you get a win in the division, it's huge. But, I need to do a better job of seeing my reads, and keeping the ball out of the other teams hands." Deshaun Watson said after the game.

The offensive line did it's job, keeping Watson upright, allowing only one sack to Calais Campbell. They also lead the way as Lamar Miller ran for 116 yards. Jacksonville was playing without their star DE Yannick Ngokue who has a broken wrist, and didn't dress for the game.

"As a group, we are not happy about the perception about us." Lamar Miller said. "Maybe after today, we can quiet the noise around us."

Jalen Ramsey took DeAndre Hopkins out of the game, allowing him only 3 catches for 35 yards. However, that allowed Will Fuller IV more looks, and he took advantage by leading the team with 6 catches, 83 yards, and a touchdown.

The Texans held the Jaguars offense in check, keeping Leonard Fournette to only 42 yards rushing.

If it weren't for a late game 50 yard pass and catch to Dede Westbrook, they would've held the Jags to under 200 yards of offense.

"We were amped to play to foe, and get a W in the South." said Whitney Mercilus, who had one of two QB sacks (Benardrick McKinney had the other."

Next week, the Texans travel out west to play the high powered Los Angeles Chargers.
