Golden Eagles Topple Chargers On Hunt's Ground Game
Late-game playmaking leads to a second straight win for Mexico City.

Martin Bower
NFL.com
Last week, the Mexico City Golden Eagles put away the Chicago Bears with authority, winning 26-6 in their first regular season game. This week, they faced off against a Chargers team reeling from a season-opening loss to the Carolina Panthers, and while they were able to come away with a victory, it was a much closer, more hard-fought affair than their opening-week win. The ground game was once again the root of the Golden Eagle's success, and it managed to carry them to a last-minute victory.

Kareem Hunt recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing game against Los Angeles.
The first half of the game focused largely on the back-and-forth defensive struggle between the two teams. Philip Rivers led his team to a field goal on the opening drive of the game, but his Chargers wouldn't score again until the final minute of the first half, with a second field goal following a rapid two-minute drill by Rivers. The Chargers succeeded in producing both through the air and on the ground, with Marvin Gordon II averaging 4.4 yards per carry on a day where Rivers exceeded 350 yards passing. The Golden Eagles, just as in their season opener, continued to rely heavily on the legs of Kareem Hunt, who produced the team's only score during the first half.

After the Chargers punted into endzone for a touchback near the end of the first quarter, Hunt took a handoff on the first play of the drive running out to his right. He quickly broke into the second level and sprinted downfield, before sharply juking the last Charger standing between him and the endzone and completed the 80-yard run for a go-ahead score. Thanks to Hunt's touchdown run, the Golden Eagles held a one-point lead at halftime, 7-6.

The low-scoring trend continued into the second half. The Chargers had an opportunity to retake the lead early in the third quarter, but an attempted 45-yard field goal curved wide right and missed the mark. Mexico City's Matt Gay responded with a successful kick from 47 yards out, scoring the only points for either team in the third quarter, and leaving the score at 10-6 going into the fourth, where the game quickly accelerated to a tense finish.

Hunter Bailey connects on a 34-yard pass to Kareem Hunt on the team's final drive.
After the Chargers opened the fourth quarter with a field goal, the Golden Eagles were poised to take a two-possession lead with a touchdown that would have put them ahead 17-9. But Hunter Bailey overthrew Mike Evans in the endzone, and Matt Gay came in to kick a 24-yard field goal, extending their lead to only 13-9. Los Angeles then seized on the opportunity, and Philip Rivers finally connected for his first touchdown of the day, tossing a 34-yard ball to WR Travis Benjamin to put the Chargers ahead 16-3 just ahead of the 4-minute mark.

Now trailing for the first time since the opening quarter, the Golden Eagles had just 4 minutes to engineer a drive to save themselves from a victory, and they needed to do so with an untested rookie Quarterback in his second career start. Bruce Arians still attempted to let Kareem Hunt help carry the workload on the final drive, but it turned out to be Hunter Bailey who set up the big play. Running out of the Power I formation, Bailey ran a play action fake to Hunt, and then lofted the ball downfield on the run, dropping it into Hunt's waiting arms inside the Chargers' 10 yardline.

Ronald Jones II dives into the endzone to seal a last-minute victory for the Golden Eagles.
The ball was now in field goal range, and Kareem Hunt sat out the final minute of the quarter after suffering a minor injury. Bruce Arians turned to backup HB Ronald Jones II, aiming to run the clock down and line up an easy field goal to send the game into overtime. However, with 8 seconds left on the clock, an up-the-middle run broke open, and Jones dove head-first into the endzone to score a touchdown, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 20-16 and allowing a squibbed kickoff to end the game with a thrilling victory in the final seconds.

While the margin of victory was much more narrow, the Golden Eagles' game followed a similar cadence to last week's win over the Bears. Hunter Bailey threw a very modest 9-20 for 94 yards, not making many big plays but also protecting the ball against turnovers and putting up 40 rushing yards of his own on 5 carries. Kareem Hunt did the majority of the day's work, with 139 yards and a touchdown, as well as a key reception to set up Jones' game-winning touchdown. The defense gave up over 400 yards of total offense, but managed to curtail scoring opportunities and keep the Chargers to only 16 points in spite of their impressive production.

Next week, Golden Eagles will take their two-game winning streak back home to Mexico City for their first regular season home game, facing off in a divisional matchup against Jacoby Brissett and the New Orleans Saints.

Saints Outlast Golden Eagles in OT For 26-20 Win
Four quarters wasn't enough for NFC South rivals.

Sebastian Ramos
Sports Writer
ElUniversal.com
The 2020 season began with two straight wins for the Golden Eagles, as they dominated the Chicago Bears and then squeezed out a win over the Chargers in the closing seconds of the game. Mexico City's newest athletic tenants came into their regular season home opener full of fire, but their early-season momentum wasn't enough to carry them past their division rival New Orleans Saints, who snuck out of Mexico City with a 26-20 victory in a contest that went into overtime.

TE O.J. Howard comes up one yard short of a first quarter touchdown.
The Golden Eagles got the first possession of the game, but things didn't look great for them early on. The Saints came in on a mission to shut down Kareem Hunt, the NFL's leading rusher after two weeks of play. Their plan started out strong, and Hunt had a total of -4 rushing yards at the end of the first quarter. Hunter Bailey, whose consistency throwing the ball remains one of the key balancing factors for the team's success, stepped up to the plate on the opening drive, moving the ball down the field with his arm and finding O.J. Howard on a streak route toward the end zone. But Howard's dive for the goal line was stopped just short, as the ball touched down at the one yardline, and the drive ended in a field goal instead of a touchdown.

The Saints, on the other hand, were able to maintain a balanced offensive attack throughout the game. Latavius Murray maintained a 4.7 yards per carry average, allowing enough variety for Jacoby Brissett to spread the ball around to his wide receivers, finding Laquon Treadwell late in the first quarter for a touchdown to put his team ahead.

Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, Kareem Hunt began to decipher his way through the Saints rushing defense, and on the first play of the second quarter, he ran 43 yards for a touchdown to allow his team to retake the lead. That lead would carry on until the final three minutes of the quarter, when Latavius Murray fought his way through a three-yard run for a touchdown, and Wil Lutz kicked a field goal as the clock expired, maintaining a one-possession, 17-10 lead for New Orleans at halftime.

Both teams seemingly fell apart in the third quarter, with neither one able to capitalize on multiple opportunities. Hunter Bailey, who had an otherwise impressive day running for 67 yards, had a touchdown on a designed Quarterback power run, but as he dove into the endzone he dropped the ball, resulting in a New Orleans touchback. The Saints ended their reprisal by fumbling the ball themselves, only for Golden Eagle Tight End O.J. Howard to drop the ball in traffic and give it back to New Orleans again. Finally, on the final play of the third quarter, Brissett was intercepted by CB Vernon Hargreaves III.

Then, the fourth quarter seemed to belong squarely to the Golden Eagles. Kareem Hunt scored his second touchdown of the day on a 52-yard outside run to tie the game, and the defense continued to shut the Saints out of any points. A long drive near the end of the game ate five minutes of time off of the clock, and ended with Matt Gay putting the Golden Eagles ahead 20-17 with just over a minute remaining. But the Saints were able to respond with a lightning one-minute offense, and as the clock ticked to 0:00 on regulation time, Wil Lutz tied the game at 20-20 and pushed the contest into overtime.

Jacoby Brissett scored the winning touchdown on a play-action pass in overtime.
New Orleans won the coin toss and took the first possession, which would prove to be the only series of OT. After faking a handoff to Latavius Murray, Brissett aired the ball out to Michael Thomas, who made his third catch of the day and carried it 64 yards for the walk-off touchdown, allowing the Saints to avoid an upset divisional loss in Mexico City.

The Golden Eagles won their first-ever game in The Eagle's Nest during the preseason, but their first regular season game in the stadium will be recorded as a frustrating loss. Still, there is room for optimism in the team's performance. Hunter Bailey did give up a touchdown, but he also made several key plays when Kareem Hunt was contained by the New Orleans defense, and accounted for 67 rushing yards of his own. Hunt, meanwhile, continued to dominate and show why he leads the NFL in rushing yards, racking up 151 yards on 25 carries and 2 touchdowns.

Next week, the Golden Eagles will play another home game, hosting the Broncos as they seek to stay above .500.

And at this point, we have to time-skip a week ahead, because I'm an idiot. Somehow, while attempting to respond to a trade offer, I accidentally picked "Advance Week" and simmed my Week 4 game against the Broncos, which we lost 37-31. Hunt got less than 100 yards, Bailey somehow threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns, and I had a good laugh at myself. Next writeup will be Week 5, with the 2-2 Golden Eagles facing the 2-2 Panthers.

Defensive Playmakers Steal Comeback Win For Mexico City
The offense struggled, but the defense brought home a critical division win.

Martin Bower
NFL.com
The Golden Eagles had to swallow a tough loss last week in Mexico City, when a game they thought they had won was sent into overtime by a buzzer-beating field goal, allowing Jacoby Brissett to take his team to a divisional win. Coming in at 2-2, the Golden Eagles traveled to play the Carolina Panthers this weekend, who also sat at 2-2 in an NFC South division that is still a wide-open game this early in the season.

Last week, the Saints contained Kareem Hunt early, but eventually lost their grip on him and gave him a 150-yard day and two touchdowns. The Panthers brought their "A" game against the run this week, and they managed to keep Hunt to just 65 yards on the day and never let him see the end zone. Still, the Golden Eagles showed a commitment to the running game, mixing in a number of option runs that involved Hunter Bailey in the scheme, as well as delivering a few handoffs to rookie TE Theodore Kemp, who lined up as a Fullback in several formations. Their production was limited, however, and the Golden Eagle offense only scored six points during the first half -- both coming on field goals.

Cam Newton connects on the first of his two second-quarter touchdown passes.
Cam Newton, on the other hand, opened the game hot. After taking some time to feel out the Golden Eagle defense in the first quarter, with his team matching their field goal with one of their own, Newton opened up the second quarter, putting 14 points on the board for the Panthers. Early in the quarter, Newton escaped the pocket and ran 18 yards to convert a long third down, leading to him connecting with Robert Foster for a 12-yard touchdown pass on their second red zone trip of the game. Newton worked similar heroics on the final drive of the first half, working his high-speed offense and completing a 51-yard pass to Curtis Samuel to get his team into the red zone again, before connecting on a tight 4-yard throw to Kendrick Bourne for another touchdown.

At halftime, the game looked to be already over for Mexico City. They trailed 17-6, and their already struggling offense was hurt even more when Kareem Hunt suffered an arm injury that saw him sit out the remainder of the game. With little offense to speak of and without their highest producer, the Golden Eagles had a tall order ahead of them to stand any chance at winning.

After allowing 17 points in the first half, the Golden Eagles shut out the Panthers in the second.
That's when the Mexico City defense stormed out of the tunnel for the second half with authority, and shut out Cam Newton's offense for the entire second half. Mounting pass pressure led to a critical strip-sack that saved a third-quarter touchdown, and the change of possession allowed Hunter Bailey to feed the ball to Mike Evans on the way to another field goal, narrowing the gap to 17-9. In spite of the score, the road was still long for the Golden Eagles -- the defense was keeping Carolina out of the endzone, but the offense wasn't putting up the kind of points they needed to overtake the lead. Fortunately for Bruce Arians, his defense had that covered, too.

Cam Newton had taken his team back into the red zone early in the fourth quarter, marking the fourth time the Panthers had threatened for the day. But as he looked for his third touchdown on a pass to Curtis Samuel, Golden Eagles MLB Devin White got in front of the ball and intercepted it. White then dashed out to the edge and ran the pick back 89 yards, scoring the first and only touchdown for Mexico City on the day. Hoping to tie the game at 17, Bruce Arians called up a short pass for a two-point conversion, but the play was jammed up and stuffed at the one yardline, leaving the Golden Eagles down by 2 points.

Matt Gay connected for his fourth field goal of the day with three and a half minutes left to play, and for the first time in the game, the Golden Eagles were in the lead, though only by a meager one point. Cam Newton, thanks to two more play-saving scrambles on the way to an 86-yard rushing total, got the Panthers into field goal range shortly after the two minute warning, ready to take the final lead. But when an illegal block in the back pushed them backward, Randy Bullock's 54-yard attempt fell short and bounced off the bottom of the upright, falling into the endzone and giving the Golden Eagles the ball back with 1:30 to kill for a win. The Panthers used all of their timeouts as they stopped the Golden Eagles on three downs, but Bruce Arians made a shocking trick play call on 4th and 1. The snap went directly to Theodore Kemp, who ran the ball forward for three yards and a conversion, allowing Hunter Bailey to take the final knee and put an end to a shocking late-game comeback spearheaded by the Mexico City defense.

The division victory will raise the Golden Eagles back above the .500 win rate, and their 3-2 record will keep them in contention within the division. But they will face one of the toughest weeks on their regular season schedule next week, facing the Packers at Lambeau Field.

Packers Dominate Golden Eagles in 40-6 Rout
Aaron Rodgers and crew controlled the game in every phase from start to finish.

Martin Bower
NFL.com
A week after Mexico City's MLB Devin White was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the Golden Eagles' defensive squad scored four sacks against Aaron Rodgers, generating consistent pressure against the veteran QB and proving that they could worm through the Green Bay line aggressively. Aside from those four sacks, however, absolutely nothing went right for the Golden Eagles, and they were shredded by the Packers, losing 40-6 in a humiliating trip to Green Bay.

The game seemed to begin well enough for Mexico City. Taking the game's first possession, the Golden Eagles opened the game by possessing the ball for almost half of the first quarter and scoring three points on a 47-yard field goal, forcing Green Bay to play from behind by the time they finally took the field. But once the Packers did get on offense, they ran away with the game almost immediately.

Aaron Rodgers runs for a touchdown on a goal-line option play.
Jamaal Williams only carried the ball once on the day, but when he filled in for Aaron Jones on a third down, he ran 25 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Then, just two drives later, the Packers got down near the goal line and threw the entire Mexico City defense off with an option run. Aaron Rodgers, not renowned for his exceptional running attack, kept the ball and ran into the endzone, falling over a defender to take a 14-3 lead. When the Golden Eagles' ensuing drives resulted in back to back three and outs, Rodgers added another touchdown to the tally on an 8-yard pass to J'Mon Moore. With just 56 seconds left in the first half, the Packers were already ahead by 18 points, and they would score once more before the half. Just 18 seconds of game time later, Hunter Bailey's one-minute offense was interrupted by an interception by Packers CB Josh Jackson, who ran a short 19 yards back into the endzone.

Hunter Bailey fumbles in the second quarter, one of two for the day.
The Golden Eagles were already trailing by 25 points at halftime, and while the defense did manage to force a three-and-out on the Packers' opening drive of the second half, they were pinned at the 2 yardline by the punt and on the next play, Kareem Hunt was wrapped up in the backfield by two tacklers for a safety. Hunt ended the day with just 53 total yards on 22 carries, and was almost outrushed by Bailey, whose scrambling earned 34 for the day. Hunt made more of an impact in the passing game, where several screen passes managed to take advantage of the Packers' aggressive blitzing schemes, but even that wasn't enough to make meaningful progress. Matt Gay would kick one more field goal in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles would continue to find everything they tried on offense shut down. When all was said and done, the Packers scored a third rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and ended the game with a field goal, capping a 40-6 victory largely fueled by Aaron Rodger's unstoppable aerial attack. While the veteran threw for just 234 yards, much of the fourth quarter was spent playing conservatively with runs and short possession passes as they tried to grind their way to the end of a game they had clearly won without risking injury to their stars.

The crushing defeat will send the Golden Eagles into their bye week on a very demoralizing note, and will drop the team back to a dead-even 3-3 record. They will face the Panthers again on the other side of the bye, hoping to secure a sweep of their conference opponents and get momentum back after being thoroughly deflated by the Packers this week.

Hard to slow down A Rod when you can't get anything going on offense.

Yeah, he's a beast... I'm enjoying the slider difficulty, as well. A top tier team wipes the floor with me, but mid and lower I stand a chance against.
